Rolling Hills Campground

521 Co Rd 304, Calera, AL 35040, USA

4.0
This property used to be a camp long ago and is in need of updating. There IS a new pickleball court and bathhouse which is great. There is a conference center and a gym and hotel on property. There are rundown camp cabins on property and old picnic tables scattered on property. There are some broken playground equipment . There are two ponds for fishing. There is a nice trail around bigger one. Most people here are long term residents or working out of town. Pets are welcome as long as they are leashed outside and reside in your camper. Area stays quiet with no craziness going on . You won’t see many people outside. Roads are not paved and pretty rough.. Staff is always nice and helpful - Linda Rhodes

Rolling Hills Campground Introduce

For local users in the Calera, Alabama area and those searching the "camping near me" category, Rolling Hills Campground, located at 521 Co Rd 304, Calera, AL 35040, USA, presents a camping option with a history as a former camp. Recent customer reviews provide a mixed perspective on the current state of the campground, highlighting both positive additions and areas that require attention. Local users considering a stay here should carefully weigh these observations to determine if Rolling Hills Campground aligns with their expectations for a local camping experience.

The environment of Rolling Hills Campground, situated in Calera, Alabama, appears to be a blend of older, established features and some newer additions. The presence of two ponds for fishing suggests a natural setting with water features that could be appealing to anglers. A "nice trail around bigger one" indicates opportunities for leisurely walks and enjoying the outdoors. However, one reviewer noted that the park was "unkept" and had "weeds everywhere," suggesting that general maintenance of the grounds might be lacking in some areas. The mention of "rundown camp cabins" and "old picnic tables scattered on property" further paints a picture of a campground with some aging infrastructure. Despite these issues, the area is described as staying "quiet with no craziness going on," which could be a significant draw for those seeking a peaceful and low-key camping experience. It's also noted that "you won’t see many people outside," which might contribute to the quiet atmosphere but could also imply a less social camping environment. The unpaved and "pretty rough" roads within the campground are another environmental factor to consider, particularly for those with larger RVs or a preference for smooth transit within the park.

The services at Rolling Hills Campground include some notable recent improvements alongside more basic offerings. A significant positive is the presence of a "new pickleball court and bathhouse," which suggests an effort to upgrade facilities and provide recreational opportunities. The existence of a conference center, gym, and hotel on the property indicates a broader facility that might cater to different types of visitors beyond just campers. However, the review mentioning a lack of staff in the office on a Saturday afternoon for check-in raises concerns about the reliability of service and the provision of essential information upon arrival, such as site location and amenity details. The absence of a dog park or waste stations, despite pets being welcome, is another service-related aspect to consider for pet owners. The negative experience of a guest passing through, who would not recommend the park unless there were no other options, underscores potential shortcomings in the overall service and upkeep.

The features of Rolling Hills Campground are a mix of the old and the new, as well as some that are in need of repair. The new pickleball court and bathhouse are significant positive features. The two ponds for fishing and the nice trail around the larger one offer recreational opportunities. The fact that pets are welcome (on leash and residing in the camper) is another feature that might appeal to some local users. However, the "rundown camp cabins," "old picnic tables," and "some broken playground equipment" suggest that certain areas of the campground are in disrepair and might not be usable or appealing. The unlevel sites reported by one reviewer are a crucial feature to consider for RVers, as level sites are essential for the proper functioning of RV systems and overall comfort. The sagging and partially submerged dock by the lake, along with the numerous fire ant hills, are additional features that detract from the overall appeal and usability of the campground's natural amenities. The website pictures being described as "deceiving" indicates a potential discrepancy between the advertised features and the actual condition of the campground.

Promotional information is not explicitly provided in the reviews. The fact that most residents appear to be long-term or working out of town might suggest that Rolling Hills Campground caters more to a specific niche rather than short-term vacationers. Local users interested in any potential promotional rates for short-term stays or weekend getaways would need to contact the campground directly using the provided phone numbers: (205) 668-7253 or +1 205-668-7253. Inquiring about any ongoing specials, seasonal rates, or discounts for local residents would be advisable. The presence of a conference center and hotel on the property might also lead to package deals or combined offers, which could be worth exploring for those interested in utilizing these facilities in addition to camping.

For local users in the Calera, Alabama area searching for "camping near me," Rolling Hills Campground at 521 Co Rd 304 presents a mixed bag based on recent reviews. The new pickleball court and bathhouse are definite positives, and the quiet atmosphere might be appealing to some. However, the reports of an unkept park, unlevel sites, rough roads, rundown cabins, and issues with the lake dock and fire ants are significant drawbacks. The inconsistent service, as indicated by the difficulty in checking in, is also a concern. Local users considering this campground should weigh the positive additions against the reported maintenance and service issues. It would be prudent to contact the campground directly using the provided phone numbers to inquire about the current condition of the facilities, the availability of level sites, and any recent improvements or maintenance efforts. Asking specific questions about the bathhouse, fishing ponds, and the trail around the lake would also be beneficial.

Given the contrasting experiences reported by the reviewers, a visit to the campground for a personal assessment might be the most effective way for local users to determine if Rolling Hills Campground meets their needs. Alternatively, seeking more recent reviews from other sources could provide a broader perspective on the current state of the campground. The fact that many occupants are long-term residents suggests that the campground might cater to a different clientele than short-term recreational campers, which could influence the level of upkeep and the types of amenities prioritized.

In conclusion, Rolling Hills Campground near Calera, Alabama, offers a local "camping near me" option with a mix of features, including new facilities like a pickleball court and bathhouse, as well as older, less maintained areas. The quiet atmosphere and pet-friendly policy might appeal to some, but concerns about the overall upkeep, site levelness, road conditions, and the state of some amenities should be carefully considered. Local users are advised to contact the campground directly at (205) 668-7253 or +1 205-668-7253 for the most current information and to potentially visit the site before making a reservation.
