San Lorenzo Park Campground

King City, CA 93930, USA

4.0
Our rig is 45 ft. When disconnected. It was a little tight getting in but we really did not have any issues. The park is very well located to get to pinnacles. There was quite a bit to do in the park which surprised us because we thought we were only getting a campground. The museums are very well kept up. The staff was very helpful and was always asking if they could do anything to help us. We're very pleasantly surprised by the outstanding customer service. We would love to come and stay again. - Greg Quintana

Features: More Than Just a Campground

What truly sets San Lorenzo Park Campground apart are its distinctive features, making it more than just a place to pitch a tent or park an RV. A major highlight is the Monterey County Agricultural and Rural Life Museum (MCARLM) located within the park grounds. This museum offers a fascinating glimpse into the region's agricultural history, with displays of historic implements, house museum furnishings, and objects related to local history from the late 19th century through World War II. The museum complex includes seven buildings, such as the Exhibit Barn, Olson Blacksmith Shop, Tractor and Harvester Shed, History of Irrigation Museum, Spreckels House (1898), La Gloria Schoolhouse (1887), and King City Train Depot (1903). This unexpected cultural gem provides an engaging educational experience right at your doorstep.

The park itself offers extensive day-use facilities beyond camping. These include numerous picnic areas (both individual and group), a charming gazebo, playgrounds for children, a volleyball court, open turf areas, and horseshoe pits. There's even a putting green for those looking to practice their short game. These diverse facilities make the park suitable for various recreational activities and gatherings, from family picnics to larger events.

For those traveling with large rigs, the park is notably big-rig friendly. While some turns might be a little tight, many campers with 45-foot rigs or larger have successfully navigated the park without significant issues. The variety of pull-through and back-in sites accommodates different vehicle sizes and preferences.

Promotional Information & Local Attractions

San Lorenzo Park Campground's strategic location makes it an ideal base for exploring the wider Monterey County area. It's right off CA 101, offering incredibly easy access for travelers heading north or south. This convenience also means it's about an hour's drive to popular coastal destinations like Monterey, the scenic 17-Mile Drive, and charming Carmel-by-the-Sea. For wine enthusiasts, the Paso Robles wine region is also approximately an hour away. During California's hotter periods, the coast offers a welcome respite, often being 40 degrees cooler than the inland temperatures around King City.

A significant draw for many campers is the campground's proximity to Pinnacles National Park, a stunning natural area known for its unique rock formations and diverse wildlife. It's a relatively short and convenient drive to access the park, making San Lorenzo a perfect lodging option for those planning to explore Pinnacles. The main street of King City, just a short drive from the campground, offers a pleasant small-town feel with good local restaurants. For those who prefer familiar options, Starbucks and McDonald's are also nearby.

While the campground offers online reservation options, some past visitors have noted that the system can be challenging to navigate, describing it as requiring "a PhD and patience." However, the general consensus among many campers is that San Lorenzo Park is an "undiscovered gem" and "barely used" for its capacity, meaning it's often quiet and uncrowded, even during holiday weeks like the Fourth of July. This makes it an excellent choice for those seeking a peaceful and spacious camping experience. The friendly staff, including hosts like Jose, consistently receive high praise for their helpfulness and outstanding customer service, often going out of their way to assist campers.

With its blend of a tranquil environment, comprehensive amenities, unique on-site museum, and convenient access to regional attractions, San Lorenzo Park Campground offers a truly surprising and enjoyable camping experience in the heart of Monterey County. It’s a place where you can easily find peace and quiet, yet remain connected to essential services and a wealth of recreational and cultural opportunities.
