Shafter Campground

Macdoel, CA 96058, USA

4.0
This FS campground currently has pit toilets (very clean SST), and garbage/recycling receptacles. No water. It was pretty tight for our 28' trailer, only one site worked, and we couldn't back in, so not recommended for bigger rigs. The campground is between the road and the train tracks, so some traffic, but brief. You can set your clocks by the trains, first in the morning at 0530! We found it interesting, to see the products moving north and south by rail. The views are great, birding was great, but very little water in creek or meadow, which might explain why there were few mosquitos.Doesn't seem to get much use, but at $5 for Senior pass holders, you can't beat it! - Marla Knight

Shafter Campground Introduce

Are you searching for "camping near me" in Northern California and looking for a quiet and affordable campground with scenic views? Shafter Campground, located near Macdoel, CA 96058, USA, might be the place for you. While the provided information doesn't include a phone number, details from visitor reviews offer a good understanding of what this campground has to offer for those seeking a more rustic camping experience.

When comparing options for "camping near me," Shafter Campground presents itself as a lightly used and budget-friendly choice, particularly for those with a Senior Pass. It's important to note that this is a Forest Service (FS) campground, which typically implies a more basic level of amenities compared to privately owned campgrounds or RV parks. Understanding these differences is key when planning your camping trip.

According to visitor reviews, Shafter Campground offers a peaceful environment. One reviewer described it as "very quiet," which can be a significant draw for campers looking to escape the noise of more developed areas. The campground is situated approximately 9 miles off of Highway 97, with the last 5 miles being a "well maintained gravel road," suggesting that it's accessible but somewhat secluded, contributing to its tranquility.

The campground features 10 campsites, each equipped with essential amenities for a comfortable basic camping experience. These include a picnic table for outdoor dining, a fire ring for campfires and cooking, and a pole with a lantern hook above the table for convenient lighting. The presence of these standard features ensures a degree of preparedness for tent campers and those with smaller camping setups.

In terms of facilities, Shafter Campground provides "very clean SST" (likely referring to single seat transportable or simple, well-maintained pit toilets). This is an important consideration, as the campground does not offer flush toilets or running water for sinks and showers. The availability of "garbage/recycling receptacles" is a positive aspect, allowing campers to dispose of waste properly and help maintain the cleanliness of the area.

A significant limitation of Shafter Campground is the lack of water. One reviewer explicitly states, "No water," which means campers must bring their entire water supply for drinking, cooking, and sanitation. This is a crucial factor to plan for, especially for longer stays or larger groups.

The environment surrounding Shafter Campground is noted for its natural beauty. Reviewers mention "great views" and excellent opportunities for "birding," suggesting a scenic location that might appeal to nature enthusiasts and those interested in wildlife observation. However, one reviewer pointed out that there was "very little water in creek or meadow," which might explain the benefit of "few mosquitos" but also indicates a potentially drier landscape during certain times of the year. It's worth considering the seasonal conditions and their impact on the local environment.

A unique characteristic of Shafter Campground is its proximity to train tracks. The campground is located "between the road and the train tracks," leading to "some traffic, but brief." One reviewer noted that the first train in the morning passes around 0530, which could be a factor for light sleepers. However, this reviewer also found it "interesting to see the products moving north and south by rail," suggesting it could be a novel aspect of the camping experience rather than a major disturbance. Another reviewer mentioned that the train tracks are about 1/4 mile from the campground and described the trains as "more a novelty and not annoying," further indicating that the train activity might not be a significant deterrent for most campers.

For RV campers, it's important to note a potential limitation. One reviewer with a 28' trailer found only one site that worked for their rig, and they were unable to back in, leading to a recommendation against it for "bigger rigs." This suggests that while smaller RVs or trailers might be accommodated, larger vehicles could face significant challenges in terms of site size and accessibility.

Perhaps one of the most appealing aspects of Shafter Campground is its affordability. The standard fee is $10 per night, which is quite reasonable. For holders of a Senior Pass, the rate is an incredibly low $5 per night, making it an exceptional value for eligible campers. The reviewer who mentioned this exclaimed, "at $5 for Senior pass holders, you can't beat it!"

In summary, Shafter Campground offers a quiet and scenic camping experience near Macdoel, CA. Its features include basic amenities like picnic tables, fire rings, and clean pit toilets, along with garbage and recycling receptacles. The lack of water is a crucial point to consider, requiring campers to be self-sufficient in this regard. The campground's location near train tracks might be a minor inconvenience or an interesting novelty, depending on individual preferences. While potentially challenging for larger RVs, it appears suitable for tent campers and smaller rigs. The affordability, especially for senior pass holders, makes it a compelling option for budget-conscious nature lovers seeking a peaceful getaway with opportunities for birding and enjoying the views.

For local users searching for "camping near me" who appreciate a more primitive camping experience with natural beauty and tranquility at an affordable price, Shafter Campground is worth considering. Just remember to bring your own water and be prepared for pit toilets. The chance to observe passing trains and enjoy the quiet surroundings could make for a unique and enjoyable camping trip.
