Sheridan / Big Horn Mountains KOA Journey Introduce
For local users seeking "camping near me" in the Sheridan, Wyoming area, particularly as a base for exploring the scenic Big Horn Mountains, the Sheridan / Big Horn Mountains KOA Journey presents itself as a well-regarded option with some important considerations, especially regarding winter stays. Based on the available customer reviews, this KOA offers a blend of comfortable accommodations, a convenient location, and responsive service, though winter conditions appear to be a potential concern.
Environment and Location: Gateway to Sheridan and the Big Horns
One reviewer noted that Sheridan is a "favorite stop over point" for them, and this KOA is part of that positive experience, highlighting the campground's favorable location. Situated in Sheridan, WY, it likely provides easy access to the town's amenities, attractions, and serves as a natural gateway to the majestic Big Horn Mountains. The Big Horns are renowned for their stunning scenery, offering opportunities for hiking, fishing, wildlife viewing, and scenic drives, making this KOA an appealing basecamp for outdoor enthusiasts.
The specific environment of the campground itself is not extensively detailed in these reviews. However, as a KOA Journey campground, it typically offers a range of campsite types, potentially including RV sites, tent sites, and cabin rentals. The mention of a "deluxe cabin" suggests that they offer more comfortable lodging options beyond basic campsites.
One crucial environmental factor highlighted in a negative context is the presence of snow during the winter months. While acknowledging that snow is a natural part of the area's climate (with the reviewer being from Montana and familiar with snowy conditions), the issue lies in the "poorly cleared or uncleared roads" within the campground. This poses a significant problem, particularly for those towing larger RVs, as mentioned with a "40 foot rig." The inability to navigate the campground roads safely due to snow accumulation is a serious concern for winter travelers.
Services and Amenities: Responsive Staff and Comfortable Accommodations
Positive feedback was given regarding the staff, who are described as "responsive in terms if answering the phone." This suggests that making inquiries or reservations is a smooth and efficient process, which is a crucial aspect of customer service. Prompt and helpful communication can significantly enhance the overall booking experience and provide confidence to potential guests.
The availability of a "deluxe cabin" that is also "dog friendly" is a notable service and feature. Pet-friendly accommodations are highly valued by many travelers, and a spacious and clean cabin that welcomes dogs adds significant appeal for those traveling with their furry companions. The reviewer also appreciated that parking was "only steps away" from their vehicle, adding to the convenience of staying in the cabin.
While other standard campground amenities such as restrooms, showers, laundry facilities, and potential recreational areas are not specifically mentioned in these brief reviews, it's reasonable to expect that a KOA Journey campground would typically offer these services to varying degrees. KOA campgrounds generally strive to provide a comfortable and convenient experience for their guests.
However, the negative review concerning uncleared snowy roads in winter implies a potential lapse in essential winter maintenance services, which could impact the safety and accessibility of the campground for guests during that season.
Features: Dog-Friendly Cabins and Strategic Location
One of the key features highlighted is the availability of "spacious and very clean" deluxe cabins that are also dog-friendly. This caters to a specific segment of the camping market and provides a comfortable alternative to traditional RV or tent camping, especially for those who prefer a more structured accommodation while still enjoying the outdoors.
The strategic location of the KOA as a "favorite stop over point" and its proximity to Sheridan and the Big Horn Mountains is another significant feature. It serves as a convenient base for exploring the local area, whether for a short overnight stay or a longer vacation focused on outdoor activities in the mountains.
The responsiveness of the staff in handling phone inquiries can also be considered a positive feature, contributing to a smoother overall experience from initial contact to arrival.
However, the documented issue with uncleared snowy roads during winter stands out as a significant negative feature that potential winter guests must be aware of.
Promotional Information: No Specific Promotions Mentioned
The provided reviews do not contain any information about specific promotional offers or discounts at the Sheridan / Big Horn Mountains KOA Journey. KOA campgrounds often have various promotions, such as seasonal discounts, loyalty programs (KOA Rewards), or special packages. Local users interested in staying at this KOA should directly inquire about any current promotions that might be available, especially for local residents or for stays during specific times of the year.
Checking the official KOA website or contacting the Sheridan / Big Horn Mountains KOA Journey directly via phone would be the best way to obtain information on any potential deals or discounts.
Considerations for Local Users: Weighing Location and Winter Accessibility
For local users searching for "camping near me" in the Sheridan area, the Sheridan / Big Horn Mountains KOA Journey offers a potentially attractive option due to its convenient location for accessing both the town and the Big Horn Mountains. The availability of dog-friendly deluxe cabins is a significant plus for pet owners seeking comfortable accommodations.
The responsive staff, as mentioned in one review, suggests a commitment to good customer service, at least in terms of handling inquiries. This can provide reassurance when booking and planning a stay.
However, the critical issue raised regarding uncleared snowy roads during winter is a major consideration for local users planning to camp during that season. The reviewer, familiar with winter conditions, explicitly stated that they would not stay here again during the winter due to this safety and logistical concern when towing a large RV. This feedback should be taken seriously by anyone considering a winter stay, especially those with larger vehicles.
For camping during other seasons (spring, summer, fall), this KOA appears to be a well-regarded stopover and basecamp, potentially offering a comfortable and convenient experience. The availability of different accommodation types (cabins, presumably RV and tent sites) caters to a variety of camping preferences.
Recommendation: Contact Directly and Inquire About Seasonal Conditions
Local users interested in the Sheridan / Big Horn Mountains KOA Journey should contact them directly at (307) 674-8766 or +1 307-674-8766 to inquire about:
- The types of campsites available (RV, tent, cabin).

- Details about the deluxe cabins, including their size and amenities.
- Policies and procedures for snow removal and road maintenance during the winter months.
- Current rates and any available promotional offers, especially for local residents.
- Booking policies and availability.
By directly engaging with the campground, local users can gain a clearer understanding of what to expect during their stay and make an informed decision based on their specific needs and the time of year they plan to camp.
In conclusion, Sheridan / Big Horn Mountains KOA Journey offers a potentially excellent location and comfortable accommodations, particularly the dog-friendly deluxe cabins. However, prospective guests, especially those planning winter stays, must be aware of the reported issues with snow removal on campground roads. Contacting the KOA directly for the most up-to-date information on seasonal conditions and available amenities is highly recommended for local users considering this "camping near me" option.

Sheridan / Big Horn Mountains KOA Journey Reviews
This deluxe cabin was dog friendly. Spacious and very clean. Parking was only steps away from my vehicle. Highly recommend!
Apr 30, 2025 · Michelle MoralesSheridan! A favorite stop over point for us along with this KOA during our travels. The staff are responsive in terms if answering the phone and the location is great. However, after our 2nd and 3rd stay here, damage to our truck then almost to our RV due to uncleared snowy roads became an issue. We recognize snow is part of the area as we call Montana home and know the climate well. However, poorly cleared or uncleared roads are unacceptable when towing a 40 foot rig.We may stay here again, but never during the winter.
Feb 22, 2025 · Andrew McCoyEnjoyed our stay. Nice having green grass. Clean and well kept. We'll be back.
May 06, 2025 · Adam FinchWe loved our stay at the Sheridan KOA. The staff were friendly and extremely helpful. They let us change our reservation day of arrival to a deluxe cabin because our travel trailer ended up with a serious water leak in the slide out, forcing us to put it in a local repair shop. The following day after the trailer was fixed the KOA staff were able to put us back into a camper site. We were extremely lucking they weren’t all booked up.The campground was beautiful, and they were expanding, looked to be 16 more RV/TT sites being added. Pool was clean and warm, bathrooms large, laundry, and little store. Close to town for anything else you’d need and for exploring. We’ll definitely stay here again.
