Skipper's Point Campground Introduce
For local Department of Defense (DOD) personnel seeking a tranquil "camping near me" experience, Skipper's Point Campground in Gunpowder, Maryland, offers a unique and exclusive retreat. This primitive campground provides a clean and quiet environment specifically tailored for DOD personnel and their families. It's important to note that access to and use of Skipper's Point Campground is restricted to DOD personnel only, requiring valid identification for reservation and entry. If you meet this criterion and are looking for a peaceful escape into nature, Skipper's Point Campground presents a straightforward and well-maintained option.
The environment at Skipper's Point Campground is consistently described as "super quiet" and "relatively quiet," making it an appealing destination for those seeking respite from the noise of everyday life. While one reviewer mentions a nearby Army airfield, the overall impression is one of tranquility. The campground is set in a primitive style, emphasizing a natural setting with essential amenities rather than extensive development. This focus on a more basic camping experience allows visitors to connect with the outdoors in a simple and direct way. The cleanliness of the campground is also frequently highlighted, indicating a well-maintained natural space for visitors to enjoy.
Skipper's Point Campground offers several basic services and features to enhance the primitive camping experience. Individual campsites are equipped with practical amenities such as picnic tables and stone fire rings, providing designated areas for dining and campfires. These fundamental features are essential for a comfortable and traditional camping setup. Additionally, the campground includes pavilions with picnic tables, offering larger covered spaces that could be ideal for group gatherings or providing shelter from the elements. For those who enjoy cooking outdoors, a couple of small charcoal grills are also available for use.
For recreational activities, Skipper's Point Campground provides a playground, which is reported to be in good condition. This makes it a family-friendly destination for DOD personnel with children, offering a space for kids to play and enjoy the outdoors. A significant feature for those with boats or canoes is the presence of a boat ramp. This ramp provides convenient access to the water, allowing campers to easily launch small boats and canoes for aquatic activities. The surrounding waterways likely offer opportunities for paddling and exploring the local environment.
It is crucial for potential visitors to be aware of the limited restroom facilities at Skipper's Point Campground. As explicitly stated in the reviews, there are no showers available. The only restroom facility mentioned is a porta-potty. This is a significant consideration for campers planning an extended stay, as it necessitates being prepared for primitive sanitation arrangements. The cleanliness of the porta-potty is not specifically commented on in the provided reviews, but the overall cleanliness of the campground suggests it is likely maintained to a reasonable standard.
One reviewer notes uncertainty about whether the RV spots are still in active use, as they have only observed tents during their visits. This suggests that the campground may primarily cater to tent camping at present. DOD personnel with RVs should contact the campground directly to inquire about the availability and condition of RV sites and any associated hookups, as this information is not definitively provided in the reviews.
Given the exclusive nature of Skipper's Point Campground for DOD personnel, promotional information aimed at the general public would not typically apply. Any specific rules, regulations, or potential fees associated with using the campground would likely be communicated directly to eligible personnel through military channels or upon inquiry with the campground management. Local DOD personnel interested in camping at Skipper's Point should be prepared to show their valid DOD identification when making a reservation and upon arrival. Inquiring about any specific guidelines or reservation procedures when contacting the campground is advisable.
In summary, Skipper's Point Campground offers a quiet and clean primitive camping experience exclusively for Department of Defense personnel near Gunpowder, Maryland. Its key features include campsites with picnic tables and fire rings, pavilions, charcoal grills, a playground in good condition, and a convenient boat ramp for small boats and canoes. However, it is essential to note the absence of showers, with only a porta-potty available for restroom facilities. The campground's tranquil atmosphere and basic amenities cater to those seeking a simple and nature-focused camping trip. Local DOD personnel looking for a peaceful "camping near me" option within a secure and well-maintained environment should consider Skipper's Point Campground, keeping in mind the primitive nature of the facilities and the requirement of DOD identification for access.

Feb 12, 2022 · AugusteDOD personnel only - must have ID to reserve and use. Relatively quiet (there is an Army airfield nearby) primitive campground. Not sure if the RV spots are live anymore, I've only seen tents. Porta-potty only, no showers. Boat ramp is great for putting small boats and canoes. Playground is in good condition.
Aug 11, 2017 · Gerald HIt was quite a nice area years ago, but has been neglected for almost a decade now resulting in campsites no longer usable and a playground that is overgrown that kids can't use anymore. Still a beautiful area with access to the Bush river and the Chesapeake Bay.
Nov 13, 2020 · Timothy SchickedanzWe were stationed in Edgewood when I was born. We left when I was 7 but many memories were centered around here and the rod and gun club. It has not changed very much.
Feb 21, 2020 · Tina DraperI don't think anyone has been down here in a while. Overgrown and not used, but a beautiful area.
