South Fork Group Campground Introduce
South Fork Group Campground, located in the vast and majestic Eldorado National Forest in California, offers an unparalleled camping experience, particularly for large groups. Categorized under "Camping Near Me," this site stands out as a prime destination for those looking to immerse themselves in the natural beauty of the High Sierra. Situated at an elevation of 5,200 feet, nestled in the Crystal Basin Recreation Area, South Fork Group Campground provides a remote yet accessible setting that promises a true outdoor adventure.
The environment at South Fork Group Campground is nothing short of breathtaking. Described by visitors as "one of the most beautiful places I've visited in my life," the campground is surrounded by the towering pines and rugged terrain characteristic of the Sierra Nevada. The South Fork Rubicon River is located nearby, offering the soothing sounds of flowing water and opportunities for various water-based activities. The campground's remote location contributes to a profound sense of peace and solitude, allowing campers to disconnect from the daily grind and reconnect with nature. While the address "01008037, CA, USA" is provided, for more precise navigation, it is understood to be located in the vicinity of Pollock Pines, CA, accessible via scenic forest roads, specifically by traveling 21 miles east from Placerville on Highway 50, turning left on Ice House Road for 25 miles, and then left on South Fork Road for about a mile. This journey itself hints at the wild beauty awaiting campers.
One of the standout features of South Fork Group Campground is its exceptional capacity and versatility for groups. It is explicitly designed to accommodate "anything from tents to large RVs," making it an ideal choice for family reunions, scout troops, or any large gathering seeking a shared outdoor experience. The campground can host a significant number of people, with the capacity for up to 125 guests and 20 vehicles (with a maximum length of 50 feet). This flexibility is a major draw for group organizers. While it functions as a single large group site, it can also be reserved as multiple single-family sites, offering options depending on the group's needs and size. For the convenience of group cooking, there's a dedicated area equipped with food preparation tables and double grills. Each individual site within the group campground also comes with campfire rings and grills, perfect for enjoying a classic campfire experience under the starry sky.
In terms of services and amenities, South Fork Group Campground provides essential facilities for a comfortable stay while maintaining a rustic, outdoor feel. On-site restrooms, specifically vault toilets, are available for campers' convenience. It's important to note that drinking water is not available directly at the campground. However, visitors have options: stream water can be boiled for consumption, or campers can fill up at nearby boat ramps. This detail highlights the need for campers to be prepared and self-sufficient, which is often a characteristic of true outdoor camping experiences. The campground also includes a parking area, further facilitating access for large groups with multiple vehicles. Cell service in the area is reported to be fair to poor, which can be seen as either a challenge or an opportunity to truly unplug and enjoy the wilderness without digital distractions.
The campground's location is a significant asset for outdoor enthusiasts, placing it in close proximity to a wealth of recreational opportunities. A key highlight is its direct access to the iconic Rubicon Trailhead. For those interested in off-roading, hiking, or simply exploring this famous route, South Fork Group Campground serves as an excellent base. Additionally, the stunning Desolation Wilderness is "very close to this site." This wilderness area offers unparalleled opportunities for backpacking, hiking, and experiencing pristine alpine lakes and granite peaks. Visitors planning to venture into Desolation Wilderness should be aware of permit requirements for both day and overnight use, as well as regulations regarding campfires (which are generally prohibited in the wilderness area) and food storage (bear canisters are often required). Other recreational activities readily available in the surrounding Eldorado National Forest include hiking, mountain biking, fishing, hunting, horseback riding, picnicking, and wildlife viewing. The South Fork of the Rubicon River, within walking distance, is excellent for fishing, swimming, and other water sports. Gerle Creek Reservoir, a few minutes away, offers swimming and non-motorized boating, providing a peaceful lake environment.
For those interested in reserving South Fork Group Campground for their next group function or trip, it is highly recommended to contact the Forest Service beforehand. Reservations are typically made through the National Recreation Reservation Service, either online or by phone. It's advisable to book well in advance, especially during peak seasons from late May to early October, as this popular group site can be in high demand. The main contact for campground inquiries is generally the Eldorado National Forest at 530-644-2324 or 530-644-6048. Understanding reservation procedures and any specific rules, such as campfire restrictions which can vary based on fire conditions, is crucial for a smooth and enjoyable trip. Additionally, given the remote setting, visitors should come prepared with all necessary supplies, including drinking water, and be aware of bear activity in the area by utilizing appropriate food containers.
In summary, South Fork Group Campground in California is an exceptional choice for "Camping Near Me" for anyone planning a large group outdoor adventure. Its combination of a stunning natural environment, ample group accommodation, essential on-site facilities like vault toilets, and unparalleled access to iconic trails like the Rubicon Trail and the vast Desolation Wilderness makes it a highly recommended destination. While it offers a rustic experience without piped water or electricity, it provides the perfect backdrop for creating lasting memories amidst the majestic beauty of the Eldorado National Forest. Plan ahead, reserve your spot, and prepare for an unforgettable high Sierra camping experience.

South Fork Group Campground Reviews
Aside from them blocking off the free campgrounds I grew up camping at it's still one of the most beautiful places I've visited in my life
Sep 24, 2024 · Susan MaddingAwesome site for large groups. This place can accommodate, anything from tents to large RVs. There are on site restrooms and a stream nearby, for water... Highly recommend that you contact the forest service before to ensure that you can reserve the site for your group function/trip. Access to the Rubicon Trailhead and Desolation Wilderness are very close to to this site.
Jun 19, 2021 · Edward LindHappened upon this site and the sign clearly says if it's a fee area it needs to be labeled as such. There was no drop box and no clue as to who I should pay, where or even if I could stay there as a single person for the night. Turns out it's reserve only and at $100 a nigh . No thanks. Looked like a fairly decent campground though.
