Update 2/7: Airbnb refunded me the full amount. I've added a star in the location as it was an interesting drive there.DO NOT get a cabin here!! Still trying to get my Airbnb refund from purchasing a 30 day, i.e. monthly stay here. Cabin was extremely infested with bugs (spiders in every corner, junebugs randomly everywhere, and I killed a cockroach in the first hour. The host (Lauren Sparkman) claims that none of this is true and insists I am lying because of 2 possible reasons:1) I had a job timing change and needed to cancel.2) Because of her strict cancellation policy. Which is no refunds unless 30 days or more before check in.Lauren, I am not lying to you about the bugs. The place and SMELL is absolutely disgusting. The fact that you have to lie about it to keep the rest of the $1,150 you think I owe is unethical. I gave you $250 basically for one night of hell and this is how you treat me. Here is the roach I found from this place. DO NOT stay here!!*****How I tried to rectify the situation:Lauren will claim that it is my fault because I did not tell her quick enough about the problem. I messaged her this, two days after I left about the bug infested cabin:Kevin:"I'm cancelling the stay. Can we agree on $200 for the two nights and inconvenience on each other?"Below is the review she gave me on the Airbnb. Again, she is lying about details to gain grounds for her to not allow me to get a full refund.Lauren:"His time started and 3 days later (Saturday til Monday night)- he messaged asking to cancel his stay and offered $200 for HIS inconvenience-our nightly price is $125- he had rented long term his price was cheaper- I asked what the problem was it took several days-then he made accusations of my place being unfit-I asked problem- no response again-I called airbnb to be monitor-they could not reach him— then accusations were made by him."The $200 was for OUR inconvenience. I drove 8 hours to get to this cabin and was not going to figure out how to resolve a bug infested place with you. Stayed one night and messaged her two days later that I'd be cancelling the stay. Said I'd give her $200 for the two nights (when I only stayed one). Pretty simple. She even claims to have over 2 weeks of issues and sleepless nights because of this. Again, lying to gain reasoning on why I shouldn't have gotten a full refund:Lauren:"Asking for proof nothing. Over 2 weeks of issues and sleepless nights by myself asking for explanation over the whole issue-response none. I even asked if it was because my strict cancellation policy-I would work with him- error on reading what my listing- did he get called back to job- no response. It has been 15+ days since his “stay” drives me nuts. Airbnb had no history on him. I hope he is not booking long term for cheaper nights then bullying hosts into feeling like they should agree to strong arm price for short term stay. I could not help him."My response was made clear and early. Two days (2 + 2 = 4) after giving you the $200 offer I told Airbnb this:Kevin:"the place was not as advertised.bugs was the main problem."How do you explain having two weeks of sleepless nights when I did respond about the issue? How do you say "response none" and also say I took several days to respond and only made (by your words) accusations. Doesn't make sense, but then again you lie and literally accused me of having a plan to get lower prices from airbnb hosts. And then, two days later after sending Airbnb this message (6 days after my night with the bugs) you are given the exact response that I'll share here:Kevin:"We don't need to be doing all this. I find a teenage cockroach in the first hour of getting there. The place has bugs all over & spiders ready to empty sacks of more spirders. It was not good, and I didn't want to be a pain about it. Thanks Kevin"That's my review of Sparkman Lake. A lying woman trying to rent out cheap unkept cabins on Airbnb and when you get there and it is infested, expected to "figure it out" with her. - Kevin Grahovec
Sparkman Lake Overview Intro Photos Location Reviews

Sparkman Lake Introduce

If you are searching for "camping near me" in the Woodsfield, Ohio area, Sparkman Lake, located at 50488 OH-145, Woodsfield, OH 43793, USA, is a location that offers both cabin and RV rentals. However, recent online reviews present a mixed picture, particularly concerning the condition of the cabin rentals. It is crucial for local users to consider these recent experiences alongside more positive, albeit older, feedback when deciding whether Sparkman Lake meets their needs for an outdoor getaway.

The environment of Sparkman Lake is described by one reviewer as offering "views of the Ohio countryside" that are "beautiful." This suggests a potentially scenic location in the rural landscape of southeastern Ohio. The name "Sparkman Lake" itself implies the presence of a lake, which could offer opportunities for activities such as fishing and enjoying lakeside views. One positive review mentions family reunions having been held at Sparkman Lake many times, indicating that the location might be suitable for group gatherings and offers a pleasant setting for such occasions. However, a very recent and highly critical review paints a starkly different picture of the environment within at least one of the cabins, describing it as "extremely infested with bugs" including spiders, junebugs, and a cockroach. The reviewer also noted a "disgusting" smell. While this negative description is specific to a cabin rental, it raises concerns about the overall upkeep and pest management at the property. Potential local users should be aware of this significant discrepancy in environmental descriptions when considering their options at Sparkman Lake.

The services and features at Sparkman Lake appear to include both cabin rentals and RV sites. One positive review mentions the availability of cabin rentals as a way to "enjoy the outdoors." The negative review was specifically about a 30-day cabin rental booked through Airbnb. This reviewer detailed issues with severe bug infestation and a lack of resolution from the host regarding a refund. Conversely, the positive review praised the management as "very accommodating," suggesting that the level of service might vary or that there have been changes in management or maintenance practices over time. The availability of RV full hook-up lots is also mentioned on a third-party booking site, indicating that the campground caters to RV travelers as well. Amenities such as individual parking at each lot are also noted for RV sites. However, specific details about general campground amenities like restrooms, showers, fire pits, or picnic tables are not consistently mentioned across the available reviews. The discrepancy between the positive mention of accommodating management and the negative experience with cabin conditions highlights the need for potential users to seek current and detailed information about the specific type of accommodation they are interested in.

A potential feature of Sparkman Lake, suggested by the positive review about family reunions, is its suitability for group events. The spaciousness of the property (mentioned as being on 40+ acres on a third-party site) and the availability of multiple rental units (5 cozy rustic cabins and a 4-bedroom deluxe cabin are also mentioned) could make it an option for larger gatherings of local users. The presence of a lake (approximately 3 acres) is another key feature, potentially offering recreational opportunities. Additionally, a third-party site lists amenities such as pedal boating, campfires, a swing set, climbing dome and slide, and a basketball area, suggesting family-friendly activities might be available. However, the stark contrast with the recent negative review about cabin conditions necessitates caution and further inquiry.

The severe allegations in the negative review regarding bug infestation and the host's handling of the complaint are significant issues that potential local users must consider. The detailed account of communication attempts and the dispute over a refund paint a concerning picture of the customer service experienced by at least one guest in a cabin. While this might be an isolated incident or specific to one rental unit, it serves as a strong warning to thoroughly investigate the current conditions and policies before booking a cabin at Sparkman Lake. The positive review mentioning accommodating management offers a contrasting viewpoint, but it lacks specific details about the current state of the accommodations.

Currently, there is no specific promotional information available in the provided reviews. To inquire about current rates for cabin rentals and RV sites, availability, and any potential discounts for local residents or longer stays, it is essential to contact Sparkman Lake directly at (740) 628-5191 or +1 740-628-5191. Given the conflicting recent feedback, it would be prudent to ask detailed questions about the condition of the rental units, pest control measures, and the cancellation policies before making a reservation. Potential users might also want to seek more recent reviews from other platforms to get a broader understanding of the current state of the campground and its accommodations.

In conclusion, Sparkman Lake near Woodsfield, OH, offers a location with lake access and views of the Ohio countryside, potentially suitable for family gatherings and providing RV sites. However, a very recent and detailed review raises serious concerns about significant bug infestation and poor conditions within at least one of the cabin rentals, along with allegations of dishonesty from the host regarding these issues. While an older review mentions accommodating management, the stark contrast necessitates extreme caution, especially for those considering cabin rentals. Local users searching for "camping near me" should weigh the potential for a scenic getaway against the risk of encountering the problems described in the negative review. Thoroughly investigating the current conditions, amenities, and customer service policies by contacting Sparkman Lake directly and seeking additional recent reviews is strongly advised before making any booking decisions.
