Spook Cave & Campground boasts a diverse environment that caters to various interests. Imagine waking up to the soothing sounds of a stream running through the campground, or the picturesque sight of a waterfall cascading nearby. For those who enjoy angling, there's a fishing lake offering opportunities to cast your line and relax by the water. The campground's location also serves as an excellent base during the fall season, providing easy access to the scenic drives along the river, perfect for witnessing the breathtaking display of fall foliage.
Families with children will appreciate the dedicated playground area, equipped with well-maintained and engaging equipment that promises hours of fun for the little ones. One reviewer highlighted their family's positive experiences, mentioning their enjoyment of both tent camping and cabin stays, as well as the fascinating cave tour that the kids thoroughly enjoyed.
While the natural surroundings offer undeniable appeal, it's important to consider all aspects of the campground to ensure it aligns with your preferences. One visitor described the property as initially beautiful, noting the well-kept lawns and the pleasant experience of having a trout stream directly behind their campsite. The absence of mosquitoes was also mentioned as a significant advantage.
However, this same reviewer also pointed out a few drawbacks that potential visitors should be aware of. The beach area was described as extremely small, and the water quality was deemed unsatisfactory compared to other beaches they had visited. This is a crucial point for those prioritizing swimming and beach-related activities during their camping trip.
Another significant factor to consider is the presence of train tracks adjacent to the campground. Trains do pass by occasionally, and some reviewers have noted that the train horns can be quite loud, particularly during the night, potentially disrupting sleep. While this is beyond the campground's control, it's an important piece of information for light sleepers or those seeking a completely tranquil environment.
Furthermore, Spook Cave & Campground permits the use of UTVs within the premises. While this might be a plus for off-road enthusiasts, some visitors have found the noise generated by these vehicles to be disruptive. One review indicated that while there are rules in place regarding UTV usage after 10 pm, enforcement may be inconsistent. This is something to keep in mind if you are seeking a quiet and peaceful camping experience.
In terms of services and amenities, the campground offers a cave tour, which has been described as fun and enjoyable by visitors. The on-site shop is also noted to be very nice, potentially offering essentials, souvenirs, or snacks. Additionally, the ice cream available at the campground received positive feedback, suggesting a sweet treat option during your stay. The staff has generally been described as friendly, contributing to a positive overall atmosphere.
It's worth noting that the office hours may be somewhat limited, particularly on weekends, with one reviewer mentioning a 5:30 pm closing time. This could be a factor to consider if you anticipate needing assistance or checking in late on a weekend.
Considering the "camping near me" category, Spook Cave & Campground offers a unique blend of natural attractions and recreational opportunities. The presence of the stream, waterfall, and fishing lake provides a picturesque backdrop for your camping adventure. The cave tour adds a distinct element of exploration and interest, appealing to both adults and children. The playground ensures that younger campers have a dedicated space for fun and activity.
However, potential visitors should weigh these positives against the reported drawbacks, such as the small and potentially unclean beach, the noise from passing trains, and the presence of UTVs within the campground. The limited weekend office hours are also a practical consideration.
Ultimately, Spook Cave & Campground offers a multifaceted camping experience in a convenient location for those searching for "camping near me" in the McGregor, Iowa region. It provides a basecamp for exploring the natural beauty of the area, including fall foliage viewing and potentially nearby hiking trails (though not explicitly mentioned in the provided reviews). The availability of both campsites for tents and RVs, as well as cabin rentals (mentioned by one reviewer), offers flexibility in accommodation choices.
To make an informed decision, it is recommended to contact Spook Cave & Campground directly at (563) 539-4114 or +1 563-539-4114 to inquire about current conditions, availability, and any specific concerns you may have regarding noise levels, beach conditions, or UTV regulations. Spook Cave & Campground Reviews
We really like this camp ground. Stream runs through, waterfall, fishing lake and many others. Great location for a base in the fall to drive to the river for fall leave viewing. Kids have taken the cave tour and stayed in a cabin. We take the camper. There is train tracks that run next to camp ground and trains do come through occasionally. Great playground area with nice equipment.
Oct 07, 2024 · Jeff OmansThis campground initially appeared beautiful. Property is well maintained as far as lawn care and we had a trout stream right behind us. The lack of mosquitoes was also a big plus. However, the beach is extremely small and the water is filthy. I’m also comparing it to other beaches we’ve been to. Also, the trains that go through blaring horns at all hours of the night are quite annoying. Obviously not something they have control over but nonetheless difficult to sleep through. Also, keep in mind that this campground allows UTVs and they are everywhere and they are LOUD. The rules state no driving after 10pm but that was clearly not enforced and I was even told not to worry about driving hours when I rented a golf cart. The office hours are strange. They close at 5:30 on the weekends which is bizarre as that’s when most of your guests are there. The cave tour was fun and quite enjoyable and the shop is very nice. Ice cream was delicious as well and staff was friendly. It overall was not bad, but I would most likely not stay there again.
Aug 05, 2024 · JWe decided to book a campsite for the Memorial Day weekend. Price seemed high at first but figured why not give it a try. Once we arrived I found out that this place was very well kept! The bathrooms were spotless, modern and very nice. The campsites were very nice with mowing and locations next to the creek. They bring firewood right to your campsite and all around a top notch place. I especially loved hiking the trails around the property and of course the cave tour. Our tour guide Ab did an amazing job and had us laughing throughout the tour. Don’t let the price fool you this place is worth every penny.
May 26, 2024 · Michael RectorThey will charge you extra for any tent larger than a 2 person tent, so no family tents/kid tents. There are no age limits on the cave tour, and unfortunately there was a baby who cried a majority of the tour, making it hard for our guide to give us information on the cave. There were two different trains that ran in the middle of the night, and one must have had a maintenance issue, causing sparks to fly and water to be sprayed onto our tent and vehicles driving on the tracks passed our site all night. I understand that isn't something the campground controls, but site placement is. Definitely not worth the money.
Aug 12, 2024 · Sara MagerowskiWe were there for a week. Friends from Michigan joined us. As they were all hooked up and leaving with their RV and their jeep hooked up behind it the air brakes malfunctioned on their rig and brakes wouldn’t release. Called several places for help, some would not travel to us, some wouldn’t work on an RV or air brakes. I happened to see the owner driving in, Russ, and flagged him down. He made some calls and had help out to us in an hour and a half. Our friends wound up staying an additional night for the repairs but I don’t know what we would have done if not for Russ. This is an amazing, clean, beautifully maintained camp ground! Sites are awesome! Cave tour is great! Cabins are awesome! The owners are wonderful, friendly, and helpful! Highly recommend and we’ve been there twice and look forward to reserving next year! Highly recommend! Hidden gem right here!
