Squirrel Rock RV Campground Introduce
For those searching under the "Camping Near Me" category for a truly unique and private RV experience in California's historic Gold Country, Squirrel Rock RV Campground presents an exceptional option. Situated at 10900 Airport Rd, Columbia, CA 95310, USA, with phone contact available at (209) 536-9267 or +1 209-536-9267, this campground distinguishes itself by offering a singular, private camping experience, ideal for self-contained RVs.
Squirrel Rock RV Campground is set within an 8-acre private, gated property in the historic townsite of Columbia, known as the "Gem of the Southern Mines." This location provides a serene and relaxing environment, making it feel as though you have the entire campground to yourselves. The landscape features a mix of natural beauty, with large rocks (from which the campground derives its name) exposed by the 49ers, and a seasonal pond with a loop walking trail around it. While there might be occasional unobtrusive noise from the nearby Columbia Airport, guests consistently praise the peaceful and natural setting. The campground embraces the local wildlife, most notably its namesake squirrels, which are known to entertain visitors with their unique "squirrel city" and "saloon," adding a whimsical charm to the natural surroundings. At night, string lights and lights tucked into the rocks illuminate the area, creating a romantic and magical atmosphere. The grounds are meticulously maintained, featuring gravel sites that are level and well-cared for. The area is characterized by the rolling foothills of the Sierra Nevada, offering a taste of the natural beauty of the region while remaining close to historical sites and modern conveniences. This balance of seclusion and accessibility defines the appealing environment of Squirrel Rock RV Campground.
Squirrel Rock RV Campground is specifically designed for fully self-contained RVs and trailers, meaning it does not offer on-site restrooms, showers, or a dump station. This design ensures privacy and caters to campers who prefer to use their own facilities. However, the campground provides essential hookups to ensure a comfortable stay for its target audience. Each of the two available RV sites is equipped with electric pedestals offering 50/30/110 amp service and water hookups with two hose bibs. This allows for flexibility whether you are traveling with a single RV or with family/friends as a double site. Beyond the hookups, each campsite includes a picnic table, a campfire ring for cozy evenings, and a Weber BBQ grill (campers are advised to bring their own charcoal). For convenience, a doggie station is provided for pet owners, along with garbage and recycle bins, reflecting a commitment to cleanliness and environmental responsibility. Recreational amenities on-site include a horseshoe pit and cornhole, offering opportunities for friendly competition. The presence of a friendly host on-site ensures that guests feel welcomed and any immediate needs or questions can be addressed, contributing to a well-cared-for and supportive environment. Basic games are also provided by the host for entertainment. The overall service philosophy focuses on providing a clean, well-maintained, and private space with the necessary utility hookups for a hassle-free RV camping experience.
One of the most distinctive features of Squirrel Rock RV Campground is its emphasis on privacy. It is typically rented to only one party at a time, ensuring that guests have the entire 8-acre property to themselves. This exclusive access makes it feel like a private retreat. While there are two electrical panels and two water hookups, allowing for two RVs to be accommodated if reserved as a "double site," the overall intent is a secluded experience. The unique "squirrel city with its own saloon" is a whimsical and charming feature that delights visitors, particularly families, and adds a memorable touch to the campground. The nighttime string lights and lights tucked into the rocks create a truly "romantic atmosphere," as noted by past guests. The hosts, Julie and her family, are consistently praised for their wonderful hospitality, welcoming nature, and responsiveness, adding a personal touch that enhances the camping experience. Beyond the campground itself, its location is a significant feature. Squirrel Rock is just minutes from the historic Columbia State Historic Park (approximately 0.6 miles, a 15-minute walk), offering free parking and year-round access to the preserved Gold Rush town. This proximity allows for easy exploration of living history, including historic buildings, shops, and stagecoach rides. The campground is also ideally situated for accessing a wealth of other Gold Country attractions and natural wonders. These include the charming town of Murphys with its wineries and breweries, New Melones Lake and Tuttletown recreation area for boating and water sports, Moaning Caverns, downtown Sonora for shopping and dining, Mother Lode Escape Rooms, Railtown 1897 State Historic Park, Black Oak Casino and Chicken Ranch Casino for entertainment, and Indigeny Reserve. For nature enthusiasts, Big Trees State Park and Pinecrest Lake are about a 50-minute drive away, while Yosemite National Park's valley floor is approximately a 1.5-hour drive, with YARTS transportation available from downtown Sonora. This combination of on-site charm and convenient access to diverse regional attractions makes Squirrel Rock RV Campground a highly appealing destination.
Squirrel Rock RV Campground promotes itself as a "fantastic self-contained RV/trailer camp spot" that is "clean and well cared for" with "friendly host on site." The overwhelming sentiment from customer reviews, such as "We love this private campground and it’s so close to everything! The squirrels will entertain you as they visit their little squirrel city with its own saloon🤗. At night the lights come on to give it a different romantic atmosphere. We LOVED it. The hosts are wonderful and happy to see you and welcome you. We would love to come again for sure🌸🌸🌸," strongly reinforces their unique selling points. They emphasize the privacy of having the entire campground to oneself, making it an ideal choice for a serene escape or a private gathering with family and friends. The campground highlights its perfect location as a basecamp for exploring the "Gem of the Southern Mines" and the broader Gold Country, as well as being within reasonable driving distance to major natural attractions like Yosemite National Park, Big Trees State Park, and Pinecrest Lake. The hosts' dedication to providing an incredible experience is often noted, with many guests praising the impeccable maintenance, thoughtful amenities, and warm welcome.
