Located at 20900 Cottonwood Rd, Twain Harte, CA 95383, USA, this campground has recently undergone significant improvements under new ownership, solidifying its reputation as a beautiful and accommodating destination for campers of all types.
The environment at River Ranch Campground is truly its crowning glory. Nestled in the heart of the beautiful Tuolumne County, the campground boasts a serene setting along the North Fork of the Tuolumne River. This riverside location is a major draw, allowing many campers the cherished experience of camping directly along the water's edge, a feature that is increasingly hard to find. The surrounding landscape is characterized by abundant trees, offering ample shade and a sense of seclusion. Guests consistently describe the place as "beautiful" and "peaceful," highlighting the tranquility that pervades the area. The new owners have dedicated considerable effort to clearing overgrowth and addressing neglected or dangerous trees, enhancing both the safety and aesthetic appeal of the natural environment. This commitment ensures a well-maintained yet wild feel. The campground's location within the Stanislaus National Forest at the base of the Sierra Nevada mountains provides direct access to a vast network of trails and an untouched natural landscape. The sound of the river or creek running nearby creates a soothing backdrop, perfect for relaxation. Guests can anticipate a true "camping in nature" experience, which includes the presence of local wildlife and insects, adding to the authenticity of the outdoor adventure. The clear night skies provide excellent opportunities for stargazing, a popular activity among visitors.
River Ranch Campground thoughtfully balances rustic charm with essential modern conveniences. While the campground is an "off-grid" experience with no electricity available at individual campsites (RV hookups are not provided for power), a small solar-powered system operates the entry gate, guest Wi-Fi in the upper campground, and an intercom. This introduction of Wi-Fi is a significant improvement noted by returning campers, allowing for connectivity while still embracing the outdoors. The campground features a central bathhouse with flushing toilets and heated showers, providing much-appreciated comfort. Additionally, portable toilets and vault toilets are strategically located throughout the campground for convenience. Sites are well-spaced and roomy, accommodating both tent campers and RVs (for dry camping). Each site typically includes a picnic table and a fire ring, facilitating traditional camping activities like campfires and outdoor cooking. While water is labeled non-potable, guests have the option to purify or filter it for their use. A notable recent improvement is the provision of a dumpster for garbage disposal, transitioning from a "pack it in, pack it out" policy, which adds a layer of convenience for campers. The commitment of the new owners to investing in improvements, such as clearing trees and enhancing facilities, indicates a dedication to guest comfort and satisfaction. The camp prides itself on blending nature and family camping in a safe and serene environment. Fresh eggs from a chicken coop may also be available for purchase, adding a unique touch to the stay.
The features of River Ranch Campground are particularly appealing to those seeking a classic camping experience with added benefits. A standout feature is the excellent river access, allowing for fishing in the North Fork of the Tuolumne River or Basin Creek. The ability to camp along the water is a rare and highly valued amenity. The campground's recent change in ownership has ushered in a wave of positive transformations. Reviewers consistently praise the new owners for their tireless work in clearing hazardous trees, creating new and desirable riverside sites, and generally cleaning up the property. This visible commitment to improvement fosters a sense of excitement and trust among visitors, many of whom express eagerness to return and witness future developments. For families, the campground offers activities like horseshoes, sand volleyball, a sandbox for children, and frisbee golf, ensuring entertainment for all ages. The staff, including the camp host, are frequently lauded for their helpfulness and friendly demeanor, often going out of their way to ensure campers have a great experience, such as recommending more secluded sites. The pet-friendly policy is another attractive feature, allowing furry companions to join in the outdoor adventure. The campground's proximity to the Stanislaus National Forest provides extensive opportunities for hiking and exploring the natural beauty of the Sierra Nevada mountains. Nearby attractions also include Cherry Lake and God's Bath for swimming, Black Oak Casino Resort for entertainment, and historic towns like Columbia, Jamestown, and Sonora for cultural excursions.

The emphasis on camping along the river and the tranquil atmosphere are key selling points. The visible dedication of the new owners to enhancing the campground's facilities and aesthetics serves as strong promotional material, building confidence and anticipation among prospective campers. The provision of internet access in the upper campground is a significant draw for those who wish to stay connected while enjoying the rustic environment. River Ranch Campground Reviews
A very beautiful, peaceful place to camp. The camp sites are well spaced out and roomy if you have a large group. We were able to camp along the water which we love! We had the privilege of meeting new owners who were working tirelessly removing fallen or half fallen dangerous trees. Hearing of plans for future improvements was exciting. We will definitely go back and recommend this campground!
Apr 01, 2025 · Thomas MillerWe used to camp here years ago when the kids were little. We decided to comeback with some friends and try it out as I’ve heard there are new owners. The campground was always great, but the new owners have done a ton of work. They have created new sites along the water which is awesome, camping along the river is hard to find these days. They have also done a great job clearing overgrowth and cleaning up neglected trees. And one of the biggest improvements,,, internet through the upper campground! So nice to keep in touch when camping. It’s clear the new owners are committed to investing some long overdue attention to this beautiful campground. They see the potential and I can’t wait to see what they do with it over the years. Can’t wait to go back.
Apr 01, 2025 · Lance NunnWe stayed the weekend here with friends at other sites. There are two creeks running through the campground making for lots of places to hike/walk and fish. Clean bathrooms and WiFi! Short drive to Black Oak Casino (they have a potable water and dump station for $8). The new owners have done a ton of work to upgrade the campground. Highly recommend.
Apr 01, 2025 · Jeffrey ReyesSpent 2 very short nights here (wish we had stayed longer) and had the best camping trip our large family has had in at least 3 years! The river is beautiful and clean. the bathrooms were well maintained . (I wish other campers would understand that vault toilets are meant to be shut when not in use) the camp host was absolutely wonderful. The water spigot near 4 &5 h has really low pressure but it is at the end of the grounds so I'm sure that has alot to do with it! We can't wait to come back again very soon!
Jul 16, 2024 · Brittney DavisGorgeous spot to get away. Potable water around, vaulted toilets, spots are spacious. Can't speak enough on how helpful owners were when booking. They were great! The campground host was great help and loved meeting and talking him. He was very helpful and informative. Be aware of your surroundings! Mosquitos are very present, not many but some yellow jackets, we went to hang out in the trailer due to the skunk coming around, and my daughters were worried. Bats were fun to watch in the evening. Pack your trash out! No garbage service. Great little spot to get away from the lights.
