Squirrel's Nest Platform Camping Area Introduce
For local adventurers seeking an authentic "camping near me" experience that truly immerses you in nature, Squirrel's Nest Platform Camping Area, located at 255 Big Brook Rd, Helen, GA 30545, offers a unique and primitive getaway. This camping area provides a step away from traditional campgrounds, focusing on a closer connection with the outdoors while still offering essential amenities for a comfortable stay. Situated in the scenic region near Helen, Georgia, Squirrel's Nest presents an opportunity to experience the wilderness in a distinctive platform camping setting.
The environment at Squirrel's Nest Platform Camping Area is characterized by its natural, wooded surroundings. As indicated by visitor reviews, reaching the camping platforms involves a short hike from the parking lot, approximately a quarter of a mile, with a right turn at the well-maintained bathroom facilities. This walk allows for a gradual transition into the camping area, enhancing the feeling of being secluded in nature. The trail, while manageable, is noted to be uphill on the return to the parking lot, suggesting that bringing a wagon or similar aid for transporting gear might be beneficial, especially for those with more equipment.
The core feature of Squirrel's Nest is its platform camping shelters. These shelters are described as having a back wall and a roof, providing essential protection from the elements. One reviewer noted that their shelter remained completely dry even during a rainy night, highlighting the effectiveness of the structure in providing shelter. The platforms are spacious enough to accommodate a hammock hung diagonally or to sleep three to four people on the floor, offering flexibility for different sleeping arrangements. This setup caters to those who prefer sleeping off the ground or those who enjoy the simplicity of sleeping under a sturdy roof while still feeling close to the outdoors.
In terms of services and amenities, Squirrel's Nest focuses on providing essential facilities without the distractions of electricity or artificial lighting, embracing a more primitive camping style. A community spigot is available for water access. A significant advantage highlighted by multiple reviewers is the presence of well-maintained bathroom facilities with showers. These restrooms are located a short, slightly uphill walk from the camping platforms. While one review mentioned that the water in the showers was comfortably warm but lacked hot water, and that there was a single electrical outlet located between the sinks, the overall cleanliness and privacy of the showers were appreciated. The availability of these clean and private restroom facilities significantly enhances the comfort of a primitive camping experience.
For groups, Squirrel's Nest offers well-suited amenities, including a fire pit and tables designed to accommodate larger gatherings. This makes it an appealing option for groups of friends or families looking for a shared outdoor experience. Additionally, a crucial safety feature is the inclusion of a bear-proof food storage locker at each campsite. This ensures the safety of campers and helps to protect the local wildlife by preventing access to human food sources, a vital consideration in bear country.
While the overall experience at Squirrel's Nest is highly recommended for those seeking a primitive and under-the-stars camping adventure, one significant drawback mentioned in a review concerns the construction of the steps leading up to the camping platforms. The risers were noted to be a foot high (12 inches), making the climb arduous and tiring, particularly for individuals with knee problems. The reviewer strongly suggested that adding another step to each tread would greatly improve accessibility. This is an important consideration for potential visitors, especially those with mobility issues.
Based on the available information, Squirrel's Nest Platform Camping Area offers a unique "camping near me" option for those who appreciate a more rustic and nature-focused experience. The combination of sturdy platform shelters, clean restroom facilities with showers, group-friendly amenities like fire pits and tables, and the essential bear-proof food storage lockers provides a solid foundation for a comfortable yet primitive camping trip. The natural environment near Helen, Georgia, offers opportunities for hiking and exploring the surrounding wilderness, further enhancing the appeal of this location for outdoor enthusiasts.

The presence of clean restrooms with showers and bear-proof food storage adds a level of convenience and safety that is highly valued in a primitive setting. Squirrel's Nest Platform Camping Area Reviews
From the parking lot, follow the trail and turn right at the bathroom. Probably a 1/4 mile walk to the shelter from the parking lot. Bathrooms were well maintained and had showers. The actual shelters have a back wall and a roof, with the capability to hang one hammock diagonally or sleep 3-4 on the floor. It rained all night for me but my shelter stayed completely dry. Fire-pit and tables are well suited for large groups; campsite includes a bear-proof food storage locker. Overall, it was a unique experience and I would recommend it if you're looking for a camping experience that's fairly primitive and under-the-stars. Bring a wagon or something if you have a lot of stuff because the hike to the parking lot is fairly uphill,
Jul 24, 2023 · Marco CopatThis retreat is the perfect primitive Getaway. Camping at it's best. No electricity, no lights, but one community spigot was available.Camping platforms were spacious enough to accommodate three adults easily. The restroom and showers were about a minute or two away on a slight up hill walk. The showers were clean and private. The water was comfortably warm, but no hot water at all. One electrical outlet was mounted between the two sinks. The only drawback were the steps to the Camping platform. Their construction was not well thought out at all. The Risers were a foot high (12") making the climb most arduous and tiring. Anyone with bad knees has to take their time and pull themselves upward with each step using the hand rails. This needs to be addressed seriously. Adding another step to each tread would be a huge improvement. This was a great three-day experience except for arthritic knees.
