Stokes State Forest itself is a sprawling natural haven in northwestern New Jersey, encompassing diverse landscapes of rugged mountains, dense forests, clear streams, and breathtaking vistas. Staying in one of the Stokes State Forest Cabins allows for an immersive experience in this picturesque environment. Visitors can enjoy a wide range of outdoor activities, including hiking on numerous trails that lead to scenic overlooks like Sunrise Mountain and the tranquil Tillman Ravine. The forest is also a prime location for birdwatching and observing local wildlife. The proximity to attractions such as Buttermilk Falls, mentioned in reviews of nearby areas within Stokes State Forest, further enhances the appeal for those looking to explore the natural wonders of the region.
The cabins at Stokes State Forest are described as "well appointed and rustic real log cabins built in the 1930s by the Civilian Conservation Corps," offering a unique blend of historical charm and essential amenities. These cabins are equipped to provide a comfortable stay while retaining a rustic feel. A significant feature, particularly appreciated during colder months, is the "wood stove," which reviewers note is "great at heating up the space." This makes the cabins an ideal year-round destination for those seeking a cozy retreat, even in winter.
Each cabin appears to be equipped with a functional kitchenette, including a "fridge w/freezer" and a "stove w/oven," allowing guests the convenience of preparing their own meals. The presence of "kitchen and bathroom sinks w/hot water" adds a touch of modern comfort, making it easier to manage daily needs. A "toilet" is also included within the cabin for added convenience. It's important to note that while the cabins have bathroom sinks and toilets, they do not have showers. However, a "shower facility" is available "within walking distance" of the cabins, providing a communal option for guests to freshen up.
The living space within the cabins is furnished to ensure a comfortable stay. Guests can expect a "table with benches" and "chairs" for dining and relaxing indoors. Sleeping arrangements typically include "bunk beds and two twins," suggesting that the cabins can accommodate families or small groups. The presence of "two entrances" offers added convenience and airflow. Outside, each cabin features a "picnic table," perfect for enjoying meals outdoors, as well as a "grill" for barbecues and a "fire pit" for campfires and enjoying the evening ambiance.
One reviewer mentioned staying in cabins numbered 8, 9, and 5, indicating that there are multiple cabins available within the Stokes State Forest - cabins designation. This provides potential visitors with several options to choose from, although specific differences between the cabins are not detailed in the provided information. It's advisable to inquire about the specific features and layouts of different cabins when making a reservation.
For those planning a stay during warmer months, it's important to heed the advice to "be sure and take bug spray." One reviewer noted being bothered by the "American Dog Tick," although they clarified that it is "not the species that carries Lyme." Being prepared for insects is generally recommended when spending time outdoors, especially in forested areas.
The process for checking in involves a "short drive away" to the office where guests "pick up keys" and have the option to "purchase firewood." The reviewer notes that the firewood available at the office is "nice and dry," which is preferable to "roadside stands with wood" that is "often damp and does not catch fire as quickly." This suggests that purchasing firewood at the office is a convenient and reliable option for those planning to use the wood stoves or fire pits.
Booking these cabins is made convenient through the State of New Jersey's online reservation system, as mentioned by a reviewer who stated, "can reserve online with State of NJ." This allows potential guests to check availability and book their stay remotely. Furthermore, the cabins are described as "very reasonably priced" and an "excellent value," making them an attractive option for budget-conscious travelers seeking a comfortable and enjoyable "camping near me" experience.
In summary, the Stokes State Forest Cabins offer a fantastic opportunity for a rustic and affordable getaway in the beautiful Stokes State Forest. These well-appointed log cabins, built with historical charm, provide essential amenities such as kitchenettes, toilets, and wood stoves, along with outdoor features like picnic tables, grills, and fire pits. Stokes state forest- cabins Reviews
Great getaway for the weekend. Have stayed at these cabins (8, 9, 5) and always enjoy my time there. In the winter the wood stoves are great at heating up the space. In the warmer months be sure and take bug spray (We were bothered by the American Dog Tick, not the species that carries Lyme). The office is a short drive away where you pick up keys and can purchase firewood. It is nice and dry. There are roadside stands with wood but it is often damp and does not catch fire as quickly. The cabins are well appointed and rustic - fridge w/freezer, stove w/oven, kitchen and bathroom sinks w/hot water, toilet, (no shower in the cabin, but there is a shower facility within walking distance), table with benches, chairs, bunk beds and two twins, two entrances and outside is a picnic table, grill, and fire pit. An excellent value and I recommend it.
