Sawmill Lake Campground Introduce
For local users in the Sussex, New Jersey area searching within the "camping near me" category, Sawmill Lake Campground, located in Sussex, NJ 07461, USA, presents a lakeside camping option. Based on recent customer reviews, the campground offers some appealing features alongside certain environmental considerations that potential visitors should be aware of. This introduction aims to provide an objective overview of the environment, services, and features of Sawmill Lake Campground to assist local users in making an informed decision for their next camping trip.
The environment of Sawmill Lake Campground is defined by its namesake, a lake or pond that appears to be a central feature of the camping experience. The reviews suggest that many campsites are situated around this body of water. While the presence of the lake offers scenic views and potential for lakeside relaxation, one reviewer noted that the water is "so still it does make the campground somewhat buggy." This indicates that local users should be prepared for the possibility of insects, particularly during warmer months, and might want to bring insect repellent as a precaution. The campground also boasts "nice sites," many of which are equipped with tent platforms, suggesting an effort to provide comfortable and stable ground for tent campers. The presence of large trees providing shade is also implied, contributing to a pleasant camping environment, although this is not explicitly stated.
A significant environmental concern raised in one of the reviews is the presence of "out of control" poison ivy. This is a crucial piece of information for local users, especially those with sensitivities to poison ivy or those camping with children or pets. The reviewer's suggestion to hire goats for poison ivy control indicates the severity of the issue. Potential campers should exercise caution and be able to identify and avoid poison ivy within the campground areas.
In terms of services, one notable amenity mentioned in the reviews is the presence of heated restrooms. This is a significant comfort, especially for camping during cooler evenings or during inclement weather, as highlighted by the reviewer who camped during a downpouring rain. The fact that the heated restrooms "made up for the cold wet weekend" underscores the value of this amenity. Other standard campground services, such as potable water sources, waste disposal, and potential RV hookups (though not explicitly mentioned), are typically expected at established campgrounds and are likely to be available at Sawmill Lake Campground. However, the reviews do not provide specific details on these aspects.
The features of Sawmill Lake Campground, based on the available reviews, include:
- Lakeside campsites, offering scenic views and potential access to the water. One reviewer specifically recommends the water-side sites on the east side of the pond for sunset views, while noting that the other side might experience intense morning sun. This suggests a variety of campsite locations with different sun exposures and potentially different views or access to the lake.
- Tent platforms at many sites, providing a level and potentially drier surface for pitching tents. This can be particularly beneficial in varying weather conditions.
- Heated restrooms, as mentioned, which is a notable comfort-enhancing feature.
- A potentially shaded environment due to the presence of trees, although this is inferred rather than explicitly stated.
Features that are not mentioned but are common in campgrounds might include fire rings, picnic tables at campsites, RV hookups (electrical, water), dump stations, recreational areas (playground, etc.), or organized activities. The absence of mention does not necessarily mean they are not available, but local users should inquire directly if these are important to their camping experience.
Promotional information is not explicitly provided in the reviews. However, to attract local users searching for "camping near me," Sawmill Lake Campground might emphasize:
- Its lakeside location, offering a unique camping experience centered around Sawmill Lake.
- The availability of tent platforms, which can be a desirable feature for tent campers.
- The comfort of heated restrooms, especially for shoulder season or cooler weather camping.
- The "nice sites" mentioned in the review, suggesting well-maintained and appealing camping spots.
- The potential for scenic views, particularly from the east-side water-side sites at sunset.
- Its location in Sussex County, making it a convenient getaway for residents of northern New Jersey and surrounding areas.
To address the negative feedback in the reviews, the campground might also consider promoting any efforts to manage the insect population and control the poison ivy, if such measures are being taken. Transparency about these issues and any steps being implemented could help manage expectations and reassure potential visitors.
Local users considering Sawmill Lake Campground should weigh the positive aspects, such as the nice campsites, tent platforms, and heated restrooms, against the potential drawbacks mentioned, including the buggy conditions due to the still water and the presence of significant poison ivy. The recommendation for east-side water-side sites for sunset views is a valuable tip from a previous camper.
To obtain a comprehensive understanding of Sawmill Lake Campground, local users are advised to contact the campground directly to inquire about services, amenities, current conditions regarding insects and poison ivy, and to get information on campsite availability and pricing. Checking online camping directories or review websites beyond the provided snippets might also offer additional perspectives from other campers. Understanding the campground's policies on insect control and poison ivy management would be particularly important for a comfortable and safe stay.
In conclusion, Sawmill Lake Campground in Sussex, NJ, offers a lakeside camping experience with notable features like tent platforms and heated restrooms. The environment includes a still lake that may contribute to buggy conditions, and there is a reported significant presence of poison ivy that campers should be aware of. The east-side water-side sites are recommended for sunset views. Local users searching for "camping near me" should consider these factors and seek further information from the campground directly to ensure it meets their expectations for a camping trip in Sussex County.

Sawmill Lake Campground Reviews
Came back here after a ten year gap, and was less in love with it, have to say. Nice sites, many with tent platforms, but the water is so still it does make the campground somewhat buggy. Also. The poison ivy is out of control. Y’all need to hire some goats real quick because it’s bad. That said if you’re going I would suggest the water side sites on the east side of the pond. You get sunset that way, and on the other side morning sun is too intense.
Sep 03, 2024 · Dashiell EavesDown pouring rain on our weekend camping trip. Still made the best out of the trip. Heated restrooms made up for the cold wet weekend.
Jul 19, 2023 · Joshi FThis is a nice place to stargaze. Little light pollution. You don't have to drive inside the campsite. Park outside the campside and you will have a good sight. It might be much cooler up the hill so you may want to prepare some warmkeeping clothes. Stay careful about the little insects: they could be annoying.
Jul 05, 2022 · YimingWe were two families on Father’s Day weekend. The big cons for this place were (1) a lot of overgrowth on paths and sites (2) no showers and (3) no playground for the kids. Pros though are (1) a variety of site sizes and types to pick from (2) sites are more private than Other state parks we have been to and (3) a lot of trails. Our two families wound up sharing one site even though we had two bc site 21 was extremely overgrown and quite small. Almost the whole site had grass up to our knees. We all stayed on site 22 and had enough space though. Site 22 was supposed to have a path down to the lake but that was too overgrown and muddy also. The staff at sawmill were great. Helpful with tips on where to hike with the kids. There was a playground near the monument trails.
