Stone Cliff Campground Introduce
For local users seeking a "camping near me" experience in the vicinity of Oak Hill, West Virginia, Stone Cliff Campground presents an option for those who appreciate a more rustic and nature-focused getaway. Located at Parking lot, McKendree Rd, Oak Hill, WV 25901, this smaller campground is situated adjacent to the river, offering a potentially scenic and tranquil environment for tent camping. Based on available user reviews, it's important to note that Stone Cliff Campground operates as a day-use and tent camping area with limited amenities. This introduction aims to provide an objective overview of its environment, services (or lack thereof), and features to help you determine if it aligns with your "camping near me" preferences.
Riverside Serenity in Oak Hill: The Environment Around Stone Cliff Campground
The primary environmental feature of Stone Cliff Campground is its location adjacent to the river. This proximity offers the potential for beautiful riverside views, the soothing sounds of flowing water, and opportunities for water-related activities, although the safety and accessibility of the river for swimming, fishing, or boating are not specified in the provided information and would require further investigation. The "smaller" nature of the campground suggests a more intimate and less crowded camping experience compared to larger, more developed campgrounds. The surrounding area of Oak Hill, WV, is situated within the broader Appalachian region, known for its rugged terrain, forested hills, and scenic river valleys. Campers can likely expect to be immersed in a natural setting, with opportunities for observing local flora and fauna. The mention of "plentiful" parking, big enough for any size rig or RV, suggests that while the campground is primarily for tent camping, accessing the location with larger vehicles is not an issue. This could be beneficial for those carrying significant camping gear or towing equipment for other outdoor activities in the area. However, it's crucial to remember that the camping itself is described as tent camping, implying that RV hookups are not available.
Limited Services and Amenities: What to Expect at Stone Cliff Campground
A key aspect of Stone Cliff Campground, highlighted in a user review, is the limited availability of services and amenities. Specifically, the campground does *not* offer water, electric hookups, a dump station, or showers. This categorizes Stone Cliff Campground as a more primitive or backcountry-style camping experience, requiring campers to be self-sufficient in meeting their water and power needs and managing waste. For local users accustomed to campgrounds with full hookups and amenities, this is a significant difference to consider.
The review also raises a notable concern regarding the restroom facilities, stating that they lack privacy, with the toilet being open for anyone to see. This is a critical piece of information for potential campers, especially those who value privacy and comfort in restroom facilities. It suggests that the existing restrooms may be very basic and offer minimal enclosure. Campers should be prepared for this lack of privacy if they plan to utilize the on-site restrooms.
The absence of water and electric hookups means that tent campers will need to bring their own water supply for drinking, cooking, and washing, and rely on battery-powered lighting or other off-grid power solutions. The lack of a dump station is particularly relevant for anyone considering bringing an RV for parking or as a base camp, as they would need to find alternative facilities for waste disposal. The absence of showers means that campers will need to plan for personal hygiene using other methods, such as portable camping showers or by utilizing facilities outside the campground if available nearby.
Despite these limitations, the "plentiful" parking is a notable convenience, suggesting easy access to the camping area. However, the reported lack of Verizon cell service at this location is another important factor for campers to consider, especially those who rely on their phones for communication, navigation, or emergencies. It implies that you may be off-grid in more ways than just utilities while at Stone Cliff Campground.
Features of Stone Cliff Campground: Riverside Location and Natural Setting
The primary feature of Stone Cliff Campground is its location adjacent to the river. This offers a unique opportunity for campers to be close to the water, potentially enjoying activities such as fishing (if permitted and accessible), relaxing by the riverbank, and enjoying the natural ambiance of a riverside setting. The "smaller" size of the campground can also be considered a feature, potentially providing a more secluded and less crowded experience compared to larger campgrounds. For those seeking a quieter and more intimate connection with nature, this could be a significant advantage.
The campground's proximity to Oak Hill, WV, might offer some convenience in terms of accessing supplies or local attractions outside of the immediate camping area, although the specific distance and availability of such resources are not provided. The location on McKendree Rd suggests it might be accessible by road, and the plentiful parking supports this. However, the one review mentioning a lack of Verizon cell service indicates potential remoteness in terms of connectivity.
The fact that it is described as a "day use and tent camping area" clarifies its primary purpose. While RVs and larger rigs can park there, the focus is on tent camping, and the absence of hookups reinforces this. Campers looking for a more traditional, back-to-nature tent camping experience might find the lack of extensive amenities appealing, provided they are prepared to be self-sufficient.

Is Stone Cliff Campground the Right "Camping Near Me" Choice for You?
Stone Cliff Campground offers a riverside tent camping experience in a potentially scenic natural setting near Oak Hill, WV. Its smaller size and plentiful parking are notable features. However, it is crucial for local users to be aware of the limited amenities, including the absence of water, electric hookups, a dump station, and showers. The reported lack of privacy in the restrooms and the lack of Verizon cell service are also significant considerations. This campground is likely best suited for experienced tent campers who are comfortable with a more primitive camping style and are prepared to be self-sufficient. If you value riverside camping and a quieter, less developed environment, and are equipped to handle the lack of amenities, Stone Cliff Campground could be a viable "camping near me" option. Contacting them directly for the most accurate and up-to-date information on fees, availability, and any specific guidelines is strongly recommended before planning your trip.

Stone Cliff Campground Reviews
The restrooms need a little bit more privacy. The toilet is open for anyone to see you doing your business. Other than that the place is great.
Mar 29, 2025 · On the Road with Pastor Anthony LucasNice, smaller day use and tent camping area adjacent to the river. No water, electric, dump station or showers. Parking is plentiful and big enough for any size rig or RV. I had no Verizon cell service at this location.
Sep 30, 2024 · Will HandleyIt's a picturesque narrow windy road; be alert and cautious. They were busy clearing recently downed trees from a storm. Hike in sites only. Will take the hiking trail tomorrow. The river is pretty for the evening. A bathroom, trash, picnic tables, fire ring area near campspots. Don't pack up and leave your fires burning!!!! The local testosterones come in the evening for some cantankerous behavior.
Jul 31, 2023 · Debbie Drives and TravelsOne of the best campgrounds I've been to. Sites are close enough to the river and feel far enough away from the parking lot to get the more primitive vibe, without actually needing to carry stuff very far. First come first serve means that the best sites (6, 7) may be claimed, but the others still have great fire pits. Camping on the sand is great, also good trees for hammocks at several sites
Sep 12, 2021 · Mary CatherineHad a great time camping here! Very rustic, just one toilet for men and one for women. The men’s toilet didn’t have any doors on it as a heads up. Very cool at night with River right there and the sound from River while sleeping was great!
