Beech Bottom Camping Area

3846 Plum Orchard Lake Rd, Scarbro, WV 25917, USA

3.0
Nice area. Could be much better with some better maintenance. Quiet and peaceful except for the flow of side by sides and 4wheelers on the 'main' road all the time. Outhouses (restrooms) are pit style, women's and men's sides with multiple stalls one each side of the building but NOT properly ventilated. Make sure to choose a site upwind. Fire rings and picnic tables at most of the sites, bring your own grill grate. Each site has its own trash can. Hand pump for water was labeled as NOT potable, but it didn't seem to work anyway but that may be due to this year's drought. There's a local who traveled with a brown and white, small, pitbullish looking dog who tried to come in once during the day and again at night and steal money from the self service box via a wire with a bit of glue stuck to the end. The time at night (we camping right next to outhouses and pay station) he was desperate or stupid, left in a hurry after racking the chamber of my .40 and hitting headlights of the car. Assuming local cause he came through a path in dark with no light and we may not have seen him if not for our dog. Another camper who was local told us about the daytime try while we had left camp for a supply run. We left a note with his description in a pay envelope in the box and the other campers were going to call local wardens with the warning. I'll camp there again as long as it's open. - Scott Branham

Beech Bottom Camping Area Introduce

For local campers seeking a budget-friendly and potentially rustic "camping near me" experience in West Virginia, Beech Bottom Camping Area, located at 3846 Plum Orchard Lake Rd, Scarbro, WV 25917, USA, presents an option to consider. Situated near Plum Orchard Lake, this campground offers a natural setting and basic amenities, primarily catering to those comfortable with a more primitive camping style. However, recent customer reviews provide a mixed picture, highlighting both the potential for a quiet retreat and some significant drawbacks regarding maintenance, noise, and even security.

The environment surrounding Beech Bottom Camping Area appears to be a natural and potentially scenic area near Plum Orchard Lake. One reviewer described it as a "nice area," suggesting inherent natural appeal. However, this positive aspect is somewhat overshadowed by concerns about maintenance. The same reviewer noted that the area "could be much better with some better maintenance," indicating that the facilities might be lacking in upkeep. Despite this, the general setting seems to offer a quieter atmosphere, although this tranquility is reportedly disrupted by the frequent flow of "side by sides and 4wheelers on the 'main' road all the time," which could detract from the peacefulness many campers seek.

The services and facilities at Beech Bottom Camping Area are described as basic. The restrooms are "outhouses (restrooms) are pit style," with separate women's and men's sides, each containing multiple stalls. A significant issue raised is the lack of proper ventilation in these pit toilets, with a strong recommendation to "make sure to choose a site upwind" to avoid unpleasant odors. Most campsites are equipped with fire rings and picnic tables, which are standard and appreciated amenities for outdoor cooking and dining. However, campers are advised to "bring your own grill grate," indicating that one is not consistently provided. Each site does have its own trash can, which is a convenient feature for waste management.

Water is provided via a hand pump, but it was explicitly labeled as "NOT potable." Furthermore, one reviewer noted that it "didn't seem to work anyway," potentially exacerbated by drought conditions. This lack of reliable and potable water is a significant concern for campers and necessitates bringing an adequate supply of drinking water or a reliable water purification method. The basic nature of the amenities, particularly the pit toilets and the unreliable non-potable water source, classifies Beech Bottom Camping Area as a more primitive camping experience.

A concerning feature reported by one reviewer is the presence of a local individual with a dog who allegedly attempted to steal money from the self-service payment box on two separate occasions. This raises security concerns for campers, particularly regarding the safety of their belongings and the handling of payment for campsites. While other campers were reportedly alerted and intended to contact local wardens, this incident highlights a potential issue that local users should be aware of.

Another reviewer paints a less favorable picture of the overall atmosphere, describing the campground as "full of locals that pretty much run over you." This suggests potential issues with overcrowding and inconsiderate behavior from some visitors. The same reviewer also noted a "very rough road" leading to the campground and a high frequency of traffic ("at least one car every 10 minutes"), contradicting the idea of a peaceful retreat. This negative feedback extends to the local campers, who were described as "not friendly either," potentially impacting the overall social experience for new visitors.

The cost of camping is mentioned as "$10.00," making Beech Bottom Camping Area a very budget-friendly option. For campers primarily seeking an inexpensive place to stay near Plum Orchard Lake and are prepared for basic amenities and potential inconveniences, the low cost might be appealing. However, the numerous caveats raised in the reviews regarding maintenance, noise, water availability, and the behavior of some individuals should be carefully considered.

Promotional information is absent from the provided reviews. The appeal of Beech Bottom Camping Area seems to be primarily its affordability and its location near Plum Orchard Lake. However, potential local users should weigh these factors against the reported drawbacks. If you are comfortable with primitive facilities, prepared for potential noise from off-road vehicles and other campers, and exercise caution regarding water and security, Beech Bottom Camping Area might serve as a basic camping option. However, the negative experiences reported by some visitors suggest that it may not be the peaceful and well-maintained retreat that some campers seek. It would be prudent to be well-prepared for a rustic experience and aware of the potential issues highlighted in the reviews.

In summary, Beech Bottom Camping Area near Scarbro, WV, offers a budget-friendly "camping near me" option in a natural setting near Plum Orchard Lake. However, potential visitors should be aware of reported issues including inadequate maintenance, noise from off-road vehicles, poorly ventilated pit toilets, unreliable and non-potable water from a hand pump, and concerning incidents involving a local individual. While the $10.00 camping fee is attractive, the overall experience appears to be quite rustic and potentially problematic for some campers. Local users considering this campground should carefully consider the provided feedback and be well-prepared for a primitive camping experience with potential drawbacks.
