Based on recent customer reviews, this campground is praised for its pleasant atmosphere, general quietness, and its prime location near a variety of interesting trails. However, potential visitors should also be aware of some noted drawbacks regarding water access, electrical hookups, restroom conditions, and seasonal insect presence.
The environment surrounding Dixon Springs State Park Campground is a significant draw. Being located near Golconda, Illinois, it is likely situated within or in close proximity to the Shawnee National Forest, renowned for its diverse natural beauty, including rolling hills, forests, bluffs, and unique geological formations. The repeated mention of "lots of cool trails" in the reviews underscores the campground's advantageous location for hikers and nature enthusiasts. Campers can expect to be immersed in a natural setting with opportunities for exploring the diverse flora and fauna of Southern Illinois. The quiet atmosphere reported by a reviewer suggests a peaceful and relaxing camping experience, away from the noise of more urban or heavily trafficked areas.
In terms of services, Dixon Springs State Park Campground appears to offer basic camping amenities. The mention of "electrical hookups" indicates that at least some campsites are equipped to provide electricity, which is a significant convenience for RVers and those who rely on power for certain devices. However, a reviewer noted that "some of the electrical hookups don't work," so it might be prudent to check the functionality of your assigned hookup upon arrival. Regarding water access, a reviewer stated that there is "no easy water access that I could find," which suggests that campers should come prepared with an adequate supply of water or be prepared to seek out potentially less conveniently located water sources within the park. Restroom facilities are available, with a reviewer mentioning that "the toilets have quite a few dead bugs." This suggests that while facilities are present, their cleanliness might be less than ideal, particularly concerning insects.
The features of Dixon Springs State Park Campground are highlighted by its proximity to numerous hiking trails, making it a prime location for outdoor adventure. The pleasant and generally quiet ambiance of the campground contributes to a relaxing stay. The availability of at least some campsites with electrical hookups caters to a range of camping preferences. However, the lack of easy water access is a notable limitation. The condition of the toilets, with the presence of dead bugs, is another factor to consider. Additionally, a reviewer specifically mentioned a significant presence of "a LOT of stink bugs" during their visit on October 11, 2023. This suggests that the presence of these insects might be seasonal and could impact the camping experience during certain times of the year.
Promotional aspects of Dixon Springs State Park Campground, based on the reviews, center on its appealing location near trails and its generally pleasant and quiet environment. For those prioritizing access to hiking and a peaceful camping setting in the beautiful Southern Illinois region, these are significant draws. The availability of electrical hookups at some sites adds to the convenience for certain types of campers. Despite the noted drawbacks, the overall recommendation from a reviewer ("Overall I'd recommend the campground") suggests that the positive aspects outweigh the negatives for many visitors, particularly those focused on outdoor activities.
The suggestion by a reviewer to "bring your own toilet and a can of raid!" humorously underscores the issues with the existing restroom facilities and the insect presence. Another reviewer's comment that it "Would be 5 * with a shower house or at least rest rooms" highlights the desire for improved or additional restroom facilities, implying that the current setup might be basic or lacking in certain amenities. This feedback indicates an area where the campground could potentially improve its offerings to enhance the overall visitor experience.
For local users searching for "camping near me" in the Golconda area, particularly those interested in exploring the trails of the Shawnee National Forest region, Dixon Springs State Park Campground offers a conveniently located option. The generally quiet atmosphere and the pleasantness of the people managing the campground are positive aspects. However, potential campers should be prepared for the limitations in easy water access, the possibility of non-functioning electrical hookups, and the potential for insects in the toilets and the seasonal presence of stink bugs. Planning accordingly by bringing sufficient water, checking electrical hookups, and being prepared for insects is advisable.
To get more specific information about Dixon Springs State Park Campground, such as the number of campsites with electrical hookups, the locations of water sources within the park, the types of restroom facilities available, and any specific guidelines or recommendations for dealing with insects, it would be beneficial to contact the Illinois Department of Natural Resources or visit the official website for Dixon Springs State Park. In conclusion, Dixon Springs State Park Campground near Golconda, Illinois, offers a great location for those seeking "camping near me" with easy access to numerous cool trails in a beautiful and generally quiet setting. The pleasantness of the staff is also a noted positive. However, potential campers should be aware of the reported limitations in easy water access, the possibility of malfunctioning electrical hookups, the presence of insects in the toilets, and the potential for a significant number of stink bugs during certain times of the year (as experienced in mid-October). While the campground is recommended overall by a reviewer, being prepared for these potential inconveniences will help ensure a more comfortable and enjoyable stay in this lovely area.

Dixon Springs State Park Campground Reviews
Great campground! The people are pleasant, it's usually quite, and the place is close to lots of cool trails. On the not so great side, there is no easy water access that I could find. Some of the electrical hookups don't work, and the toilets have quite a few dead bugs. There are also a LOT of stink bugs...at least when I was there on 10/11/23.Overall I'd recommend the campground, but bring your own toilet and a can of raid!
Oct 13, 2023 · Alex RWould be 5 * with a shower house or at least rest rooms. Nevertheless a lovely campground in a beautiful area.
Apr 15, 2022 · Bill MurphyNice shaded gcampground, most spots are level but all paved. Swimming pool is nice but don't expect it to be open till closing time. Also the showered house is apart of the pool so once it closes there is no access to the shower house. Could have 5 stars but no shower house
May 28, 2023 · Dustin IsenhartWebsite is deceiving, no shower house! You have to pay to get into the pool, during their hours to shower. Definitely will not be back to camp.
Jul 01, 2024 · Joan RoachWell maintained...some concern over site 9, as pretty large limbs fell on two different nights. Fortunately empty. Other than that, well mowed, site attendant cleaned pit toilets well
