Bay Creek Ranch Inc. Introduce
Are you searching for "camping near me" in Southern Illinois, specifically looking for a campground that provides convenient access to numerous trails and destinations in the region? Bay Creek Ranch Inc., located at 78 Cedar Grove Rd, Simpson, IL 62985, USA, offers primitive camping at a very affordable price of $10 per night. According to customer reviews, the campground's location is a significant advantage for outdoor enthusiasts looking to explore the natural beauty of the area. However, potential campers should be aware of certain conditions and the strong recommendation against staying in the "lodge" based on recent feedback.
The environment surrounding Bay Creek Ranch Inc. is described as being in a "great location to access a lot of trails and destinations." This suggests that the campground is situated near areas of natural interest, likely including parts of the Shawnee National Forest or other significant outdoor attractions in Southern Illinois. This prime location makes it a potentially ideal basecamp for hikers, nature lovers, and those looking to explore the diverse landscapes and recreational opportunities of the region. While the immediate environment of the campground itself is not extensively detailed, its proximity to trails implies a setting conducive to outdoor activities and immersion in nature.
In terms of services, Bay Creek Ranch Inc. offers primitive camping, which typically includes basic amenities without full hookups for RVs. The very affordable price of $10 per night for primitive camping makes it a budget-friendly option for those comfortable with a more rustic camping experience. One reviewer noted that the "showers are decent," which is a significant amenity for primitive campers who appreciate having access to bathing facilities. However, another aspect of the services mentioned is that if the office is unattended, campers should call the phone number listed on Google Maps, indicating that on-site management might not always be immediately available.
The features of Bay Creek Ranch Inc. are somewhat mixed based on the available reviews. A key feature is its excellent location for accessing trails and other destinations in the area, making it a convenient choice for those planning to spend their time exploring the outdoors. The availability of showers is another positive feature for campers. However, there are also significant drawbacks highlighted. One reviewer pointed out that "tent camping is not ideal here because the ground is so hard I broke a tent stake trying to drive it in." This is a crucial consideration for tent campers, suggesting that they might need to find alternative spots within the "big campground" where the ground is more suitable, or they might need to be prepared with very sturdy tent stakes. Another feature mentioned is the presence of stalls (likely for horses, given the "Ranch" in the name), which were reported to be in nice shape and clean, although most did not have working lights. This might be relevant for campers traveling with horses or those interested in an equestrian setting, but it's less directly applicable to general tent or RV campers.
A significant and strongly negative feature highlighted in the reviews is the condition of the "lodge" at Bay Creek Ranch Inc. Multiple issues were reported, leading the reviewer to "STRONGLY DO NOT RECOMMEND" staying there. The lodge is described as "very old, out dated and has not been maintained," with a "nasty old house smell" and an overall dirty condition due to lack of upkeep. The furniture is said to be old and broken down, and the floor has soft spots throughout, with one bedroom even being closed off due to the floor's condition. Furthermore, guests in the lodge reportedly did not have heat during their stay and were provided with old space heaters instead. The beds are described as old, and much of the bedding was covered in what appeared to be dog hair. Despite these significant issues, the lodge is described as "very expensive for what it is." This feedback provides a clear warning to potential visitors specifically regarding the lodge accommodation.
Promotional information for Bay Creek Ranch Inc. is limited to its affordable primitive camping rate of $10 per night and its advantageous location for accessing trails and destinations in Southern Illinois. For budget-conscious campers primarily interested in exploring the natural surroundings and who are comfortable with basic amenities, the low price point and the convenient location could be strong incentives. The availability of decent showers is another potential draw. However, the negative feedback regarding the hard ground for tent camping and the extremely poor condition of the lodge need to be seriously considered by potential visitors.
For local users searching for "camping near me" in the Simpson, Illinois area, Bay Creek Ranch Inc. offers a budget-friendly option for primitive camping with good access to trails. If you are planning to spend most of your time hiking or exploring the region and are looking for an affordable place to camp with access to showers, this campground might be suitable, provided you are prepared for potentially hard ground if you are tent camping. However, it is crucial to be aware of the strong negative feedback regarding the lodge accommodation, which should likely be avoided based on the provided review.
To get more specific information about the campground facilities for primitive camping, such as the number and types of campsites, the availability of water sources, restroom facilities (besides the showers), and any specific rules or regulations, it would be advisable to contact Bay Creek Ranch Inc. directly using the provided phone numbers. Inquiring about the ground conditions for tent camping in different areas of the campground might also be helpful. Additionally, if you are considering any lodging beyond primitive camping, it would be prudent to ask detailed questions about the condition and amenities of any cabins or other structures available, given the strongly negative review of the lodge.
In conclusion, Bay Creek Ranch Inc. in Simpson, Illinois, offers a budget-friendly primitive camping option with a significant advantage: its great location for accessing numerous trails and destinations in the area. The availability of decent showers is a plus for primitive campers. However, tent campers should be prepared for potentially hard ground, and the strong negative review of the "lodge" indicates that this accommodation option should likely be avoided due to its poor condition, lack of maintenance, and high price relative to its quality. For those primarily focused on outdoor exploration and looking for an affordable basecamp, Bay Creek Ranch Inc.'s campground might be a viable option, but careful consideration of the potential drawbacks is essential.

Jun 30, 2024 · Andy NealCampground is in a great location to access a lot of trails and destinations. Campground itself is nice, needs a little up keep. Stalls were in nice shape and clean but most did not have working lights. We did stay in the "lodge"....STRONGLY DO NOT RECOMMEND. It is very old, out dated and has not been maintained. It had nasty old house smell. Over all dirty just from not maintaining. All the furniture is old and broken down. The floor has soft spots all throughout. One bedroom was closed down because of the floor. We did not have heat during our stay. We were given old space heaters to use. Beds are old. Most bedding was covered in what seemed like dog hair. It's very expensive for what it is.

Feb 21, 2022 · Joe WilsonNice campground for primitive camping. We tent camped 3 nights there in July 2016. The sites are gravel base and most have water and electrical hook ups, although we didn't use them. The manager was really friendly and they have 3 friendly cats that follow you around sometimes. The bathrooms were really nice for a campground - decorated in country style, but clean and had hot water every day we were there. There isn't a restaurant there anymore, unlike some outdated internet info, but that didn't bother us. Price was similar as other places in the area and we enjoyed our stay. Would definitely stay again or recommend.
Jul 09, 2016 · Steven ThieleCampground was wonderful. The pens did hold a ton of water when it rained. They were a mudpit. Electric and water at campsite worked great. Bathroom was clean, showers were hot, pretty dark in the restrooms. Office sells trail halters and a few little things like matches, lighter fluid, etc. And ice! Owner was fantastic, maps were great, trails are horribly marked.
