Redbud Campground

Ozark, IL 62972, USA

4.0
We absolutely loved staying at Redbud Campground for the night and hiking the nearby Bell Smith Springs Trails. The sites are only $10 a night and are very primitive, there is a waterless toilet. Bring water, toilet paper, and bug spray. We stayed at site #2 and had a nice picnic table, fire ring, level gravel area for our tent and a post to hang our lantern from. Keep your food packed up we heard critters at night searching for food. The walking trails have beautiful land formations, breath-taking views and cool, clear streams to explore. - Ashley Holder

For local outdoor enthusiasts in and around Ozark, Illinois, searching for "camping near me" that offers a budget-friendly and nature-focused experience, Redbud Campground, located in Ozark, IL 62972, USA, presents an excellent option. With contact numbers (618) 658-2111 and +1 618-658-2111, this campground provides primitive campsites at a remarkably affordable rate of only $10 per night, making it an attractive choice for those seeking an economical basecamp for exploring the natural beauty of the region, particularly the nearby Bell Smith Springs Trails.

When considering options under the category of "camping near me," it's important to understand the nature of "primitive" camping. As highlighted by a satisfied visitor, the sites at Redbud Campground are indeed very basic. This means that campers should expect minimal amenities and come prepared with essential supplies. One key piece of information is the presence of a "waterless toilet," indicating that flush toilets and running water for sanitation are not available at the campsites. Therefore, local users planning a stay here must be comfortable with and prepared for this type of facility.

Furthermore, the reviews explicitly state the absence of readily available water within the campground. One camper advises, "Bring water," emphasizing the necessity for visitors to supply all their own water for drinking, cooking, and personal hygiene. This is a crucial consideration for anyone planning to camp at Redbud Campground. Proper planning for water needs is essential for a safe and comfortable experience.

In addition to water, another recommended item to bring is "toilet paper," reinforcing the primitive nature of the restroom facilities. Campers should also heed the advice to bring "bug spray," as the natural environment of Southern Illinois, particularly near wooded areas and water sources like Bell Smith Springs, can have a significant insect population, especially during warmer months.

Despite the primitive nature of the amenities, the campsites themselves appear to offer some basic conveniences. One reviewer who stayed at site #2 described having a "nice picnic table," a "fire ring" for campfires, a "level gravel area" suitable for tent setup, and even "a post to hang our lantern from." These features, while simple, can significantly enhance the camping experience, providing functionality and comfort within the natural setting. The level gravel area is particularly beneficial for ensuring a stable and dry tent site.

The environment surrounding Redbud Campground is clearly a major draw, primarily due to its proximity to the renowned Bell Smith Springs Trails. The reviewer who loved their stay specifically mentioned hiking these nearby trails, describing them as having "beautiful land formations, breath-taking views and cool, clear streams to explore." This suggests that Redbud Campground serves as an ideal launching point for local hikers and nature enthusiasts eager to experience the scenic wonders of Bell Smith Springs. The diverse terrain and refreshing streams offer a rich and rewarding outdoor adventure.

Another reviewer describes Redbud Campground as a "great location for dry camping." "Dry camping" is a term often used to describe camping without hookups for water, sewer, or electricity, which aligns with the primitive nature described by the other visitor. This reinforces the understanding that campers should be fully self-contained and prepared for off-grid living during their stay.

It's important for local users to be aware of a potential seasonal consideration mentioned in one of the reviews: "It got really busy for hunting season and the roads in were pretty deep with mud and potholes so be careful!" This indicates that during hunting season, the campground can experience increased occupancy, and the access roads might become challenging due to muddy and pothole-ridden conditions. Campers planning to visit during this time should exercise caution while driving and be prepared for potentially crowded conditions. Checking with the campground management about road conditions and peak seasons might be advisable.

The mention of "critters at night searching for food" serves as a reminder for campers to practice proper food storage. Keeping food packed up securely is essential in any natural environment to prevent attracting wildlife and ensuring the safety of both campers and animals. Using airtight containers and storing food away from sleeping areas are recommended practices.

Given its location near Bell Smith Springs and within the broader Ozark region of Southern Illinois, Redbud Campground likely benefits from the natural beauty of the Shawnee National Forest. This area is known for its diverse landscapes, including forests, bluffs, streams, and unique geological formations. Campers at Redbud Campground can expect to be immersed in this natural environment, offering opportunities for hiking, wildlife viewing, and enjoying the tranquility of the outdoors.

For local users searching for "camping near me" on a budget who are comfortable with primitive conditions and are primarily interested in accessing the hiking trails at Bell Smith Springs, Redbud Campground offers an exceptional value at just $10 per night. The basic amenities provided, such as a picnic table and fire ring at some sites, add a degree of convenience to the rustic experience.

There is no specific promotional information mentioned in the reviews. Local users interested in camping at Redbud Campground should contact the provided phone numbers to inquire about campsite availability, reservation procedures (if any), specific rules and regulations, and any potential fees beyond the nightly rate. It might also be helpful to ask about the best routes to access the campground, especially considering the potential for muddy roads during certain times of the year.

In conclusion, Redbud Campground offers local residents near Ozark, IL, an incredibly affordable "camping near me" option for those seeking a primitive outdoor experience with immediate access to the stunning Bell Smith Springs Trails. Campers should be well-prepared for the lack of running water and flush toilets, and remember to bring their own water, toilet paper, and bug spray. While the roads might be challenging during busy seasons like hunting season, the quiet natural setting and the proximity to excellent hiking make Redbud Campground a fantastic choice for budget-conscious adventurers looking to explore the beauty of Southern Illinois.
