Based on feedback from fellow campers, Stony Fork Campground stands out for its clean and spacious campsites. One reviewer mentioned having a "big site," indicating ample room to set up your camp and enjoy the surroundings. The campground is described as quiet and beautifully wooded, providing a tranquil and picturesque environment for your stay. Imagine being surrounded by trees, enjoying the peace and serenity of nature right outside your tent or RV.
For those seeking sites with amenities, Stony Fork Campground offers electric sites, with one reviewer noting a rate of $26 for such a site. This affordability, combined with the quality of the campsites, makes it an attractive option for local campers. The presence of "lots of very nice sites" suggests that whether you prefer a more secluded spot or one closer to facilities, you're likely to find an option that suits your needs.
The campground also features a nice creek, adding to the natural charm of the location. While the reviews don't specify if it's suitable for swimming, the mention of a creek often implies opportunities for peaceful streamside relaxation and enjoying the sounds of flowing water. It could also be a habitat for local wildlife, enhancing the overall nature experience.
The positive experiences shared by visitors highlight the friendly and helpful staff. Clayton is specifically mentioned as being "super friendly and helpful," indicating a welcoming and supportive atmosphere at the campground. Another reviewer praised the camp host, Terry, for being "quite friendly" and ensuring guests had everything they needed, as well as keeping the bathrooms clean and well stocked. The spaciousness of the sites is reiterated in another review, emphasizing the comfort and privacy afforded to campers. While one reviewer noted a "little bit of road noise on the loop section next to the highway," they also pointed out that other areas of the campground are very quiet, allowing you to choose a site that best suits your preference for tranquility.
Nature enthusiasts will appreciate the abundance of birds in the area, with a recommendation to "bring your binoculars." This suggests that Stony Fork Campground is a great location for bird watching, offering a chance to observe local avian wildlife in their natural habitat. The wooded environment likely contributes to the variety of bird species present.
While a visit shortly after Hurricane Helene meant that hiking trails were not yet restored, the reviewer expressed a definite intention to return and explore them in the future. This implies the presence of hiking opportunities in or around Stony Fork Campground, which would appeal to those who enjoy exploring nature on foot. The surrounding area also offers scenic drives, with a mention of the drive up to Big Walker Lookout being particularly beautiful, even when the fall colors were past their peak. Additionally, the reviewer enjoyed live music at Big Walker Lookout on a Saturday afternoon, suggesting potential for local attractions and entertainment nearby.

Stony Fork Campground Reviews
Nice clean campsites. We had a big site! Quiet, beautiful, wooded. $26 for electric site. Lots of very nice sites. Creek is nice. Clayton was super friendly and helpful. Definitely we'd stay again.
Apr 22, 2025 · Mary EsalaThis is a small but very nice USFS campground with spacious sites and quiet surroundings. There is a little bit of road noise on the loop section next to the highway, but other than that it’s very quiet. Lots of birds in the area so bring your binoculars. Our camp host, Terry, was quite friendly and made sure we had everything we needed and kept the bathrooms clean and well stocked. We stayed just a few weeks after Hurricane Helene, so hiking trails had not yet been restored, but we will definitely be back to check those out next year. The fall colors were just past their peak in late October, but the drive up to Big Walker Lookout was still quite scenic and we even got to enjoy live music there on a Saturday afternoon. This was our first time camping at Stony Fork, but we will definitely be back.

Apr 20, 2025 · Don McGlothlinMe and my son had a terrific time. We stayed for a week directly after Hurricane Helene hit. The trails were closed until October of '25, but the sites were clear and everything else was in excellent condition given the destruction the hurricane brought to the area. Nice and quiet setting, friendly staff, hot showers, and warm campfire. Couldn't ask for any better.
