Sunny Crest Family Campground

Polo, IL 61064, USA

4.0
Most sites are not level, sites are close together, and have to drive thru grass to get to many of the sites. Not many wooded/private sites. Great price to camp. ($10/night) We camped at site 66 and there was a lot of traffic from cars trying to get to their sites and a lot of foot traffic from people going to the showers/bathrooms. Bathrooms were not the cleanest, had a tree frog in the shower. There is a train that goes by frequently (didn't bother us too much) Seems to be a lot of unnecessary traffic on the roads especially at night. The same cars kept driving by repeatedly and didn't seem to be camping. The first night we had children from surrounding sites playing near and at times were in our site to the point a couple tripped over our tent stakes. People didn't seem to be respectful of quiet times and were quite loud later at night. Parents were not watching their children and let them run all over and play in the road. Sunny Crest Family Campground Introduce

For local users in Illinois seeking "camping near me," Sunny Crest Family Campground, located in Polo, IL, presents an affordable option with access to the amenities and natural beauty of a larger state park. Situated in a potentially picturesque setting, Sunny Crest offers a budget-friendly camping experience, as highlighted by a review mentioning a great price of $10 per night. However, it's essential for prospective campers to be aware of certain environmental and logistical aspects of this campground, as indicated by customer feedback.

The environment of Sunny Crest Family Campground, while located within a "gorgeous state park," as one reviewer noted, has some characteristics that potential visitors should consider. Multiple reviews mention that most campsites are not level, which could pose challenges for setting up tents or parking RVs. Additionally, the sites are described as being close together, potentially limiting privacy between camping groups. Accessing many of the sites requires driving through grass, which might be uneven or less ideal than designated pads. The campground is also noted to have fewer wooded or private sites, suggesting a more open layout. While the state park itself likely offers a pleasant natural environment, the immediate setting of Sunny Crest Campground appears to be more functional than secluded.

The services at Sunny Crest Family Campground seem to be somewhat basic, aligning with its budget-friendly nature. The campground provides dumpsters for waste disposal and vault toilets. One reviewer mentioned that the bathrooms (presumably the vault toilets) were not the cleanest and even encountered a tree frog in the shower, suggesting that cleanliness might be an area of concern for some visitors. For more comprehensive facilities, campers at Sunny Crest have access to the nearby Cedar Ridge campground, which is about a 1/4 mile walk away and offers flush toilets and a shower building. It's important to note that Sunny Crest itself does not appear to have these more developed restroom facilities on-site. Hookups for water, electricity, or sewer are not mentioned in the reviews, further indicating a more rustic camping experience within Sunny Crest itself.

The features of Sunny Crest Family Campground cater primarily to tent and small RV/camper van campers. The reviews explicitly state that this is "not a campground for big rvs and motor homes" due to the unlevel sites and lack of pads or hookups. The campground is best suited for those engaging in tent camping or using small pop-up campers or camper vans. Despite the limitations within the campground itself, a significant feature is its location within a state park that is "full of hiking trails and fishing spots." This provides ample opportunities for outdoor recreation beyond the campsite. Additionally, the state park offers amenities such as a gift shop and an "excellent restaurant," which are accessible to campers staying at Sunny Crest. The proximity to these state park features is a major draw for those willing to accept the more basic conditions of Sunny Crest Campground itself.

However, the reviews also highlight some potential drawbacks related to the campground's internal environment and the behavior of some visitors. One reviewer mentioned a lot of traffic from cars trying to access their sites and significant foot traffic to the showers/bathrooms, particularly around site 66. There were also concerns raised about unnecessary vehicle traffic, especially at night, with the same cars repeatedly driving through the campground. Noise and a lack of respect for quiet times were also reported, with children from surrounding sites playing near and even within other campsites, and loud behavior late at night. While one reviewer acknowledged that the issue of parents not supervising their children was not the park's fault, it does indicate a potential for a less peaceful experience depending on fellow campers. The frequent passing of a train was also noted, although one reviewer stated it didn't bother them too much, it's something to be aware of for those sensitive to noise.

Regarding promotional information, the only specific price mentioned in the reviews is the "great price" of $10 per night. This exceptionally low cost is undoubtedly a significant draw for budget-conscious campers looking for "camping near me." However, it's important to consider that this price may be outdated or specific to certain conditions. To obtain the current and accurate pricing for Sunny Crest Family Campground, as well as any potential discounts or special offers, local users should contact the state park directly or visit their official website. Information on reservation procedures, which may be necessary, especially during peak season, would also be available through these channels.

In conclusion, Sunny Crest Family Campground in Polo, IL, offers a very budget-friendly "camping near me" option with the significant advantage of being located within a state park that boasts "gorgeous" scenery, numerous hiking trails, fishing spots, a gift shop, and an excellent restaurant. However, prospective campers should be aware that the campground itself has some limitations, including unlevel sites, close proximity between sites, grassy access to many sites, and a lack of wooded or private options. Restroom facilities on-site are limited to vault toilets, with flush toilets and showers available at the nearby Cedar Ridge campground. The campground is best suited for tent campers and those with small RVs or camper vans. Potential issues with traffic and noise from other campers should also be considered. The very low price point of $10 per night, as mentioned in a review, makes it an attractive option for those prioritizing affordability and access to the state park's broader amenities. To get current pricing and reservation information, contacting the state park directly is recommended.
