Sunset Campground Introduce
For local users searching for "camping near me" in the Martin, Georgia area, Sunset Campground, located at 17139 GA-17, warrants careful consideration based on recent customer feedback. While the name might evoke pleasant images of outdoor stays, recent reviews paint a concerning picture regarding the campground's management, conditions, and overall suitability for recreational camping.
Martin, Georgia, is situated in the northeastern part of the state, in close proximity to Lake Hartwell. This location could potentially offer a scenic environment for camping, with access to the lake and surrounding natural areas. However, the recent reviews raise serious concerns that outweigh the potential benefits of the location itself.
One particularly troubling review describes a friend being unexpectedly asked to leave the campground on Easter Day, despite prior confirmation from the manager that he could stay. The stated reason for this eviction was that the owner deemed his camper "too old." Adding to this negative experience, the reviewer alleges that the $200.00 deposit was not returned. This incident raises significant questions about the campground's communication, management consistency, and fairness in dealing with guests.
Another, even more alarming review details the experience of the bonus son of the reviewer who reportedly lived at Sunset Campground in a rental unit. This review claims that the rental camper had a severe mildew problem due to leaks, allegedly causing the individual to become sick, miss work, lose his job, and subsequently face eviction. The reviewer further alleges that the campground management is attempting to hold this individual responsible for pre-existing damage to the camper. The reviewer strongly advises others to "RUN!" and describes the place as "filthy and run down," asserting that it is more of a residential area than a campground and suggesting that positive reviews are outdated.
These recent and highly negative reviews provide stark warnings for anyone considering Sunset Campground for their "camping near me" needs. The issues raised are significant and touch upon several critical aspects of a positive camping experience:
- Management Practices: The inconsistencies in communication and the alleged unfair treatment regarding eviction and deposits are serious concerns. Campers expect clear and consistent policies and fair interactions with campground management.
- Living Conditions: The description of a rental camper with severe mildew due to leaks, leading to health issues, paints a picture of potentially unsafe and poorly maintained accommodations. Cleanliness and proper maintenance are essential for any lodging, including campgrounds.
- Suitability as a Campground: The assertion that Sunset Campground is "residential not a campground" suggests that the primary focus might not be on providing services and facilities for recreational campers. This could mean a lack of typical campground amenities or an environment that is not conducive to a pleasant camping experience.
- Overall Condition: The description of the place as "filthy and run down" is a strong indictment of the campground's upkeep and general environment. Campers typically seek clean and well-maintained facilities.
The reviewer's claim that older positive reviews (more than two years old) might reflect a different state of the campground further underscores the importance of considering recent feedback. A significant decline in standards or management practices could have occurred over time.
Given these serious allegations from recent customers, local users searching for "camping near me" should exercise extreme caution when considering Sunset Campground. The potential for unfair treatment, poor living conditions, and a misrepresented nature of the facility as a campground are significant risks.
It is important to note that without further information or a response from the management of Sunset Campground, these reviews represent the experiences and opinions of individual customers. However, the severity and consistency of the negative feedback should not be ignored.
For local users in the Martin, GA area seeking reliable "camping near me" options, it would be prudent to explore other campgrounds and RV parks in the vicinity, particularly those with more recent and positive reviews. Resources such as online camping directories and review websites can provide valuable insights into the experiences of other campers.
If considering Sunset Campground despite these warnings, it would be essential to contact them directly at (706) 356-8932 or +1 706-356-8932 to inquire about their current policies, the condition of their facilities, and to seek clarification on the issues raised in the recent reviews. It would also be wise to request to see the specific campsite or rental unit before committing to a stay or providing any deposit.
In conclusion, while Sunset Campground in Martin, GA, might appear as a local option when searching for "camping near me," recent customer reviews contain serious allegations regarding management practices and the condition of the facilities. Local users should carefully consider this feedback and exercise caution before making a reservation. Exploring alternative campgrounds in the area with more positive and recent reviews is strongly recommended to ensure a safe and enjoyable camping experience.

Sunset Campground Reviews
Kicked my friend out his first day there....on Easter mind you...after he had been told by manager he could stay...but the owner said his camper was too old. Then to top it off didn't give his 200.00 deposit back.
Apr 20, 2025 · Donna SegarsMy bonus son lived here begging for repairs to be made to his rental. Whole camper smells like mildew. He got sick as a result of the leak and had miss work lost his job and of course got evicted minutes after. They want HIM to pay for the already damaged camper. RUN! this place is filthy and run down its residential not a campground. The good reviews here are all older than 2 years old maybe it was a decent place but not now!
Apr 23, 2024 · Rachel TurpinWe have been hear for 4 months it's a safe place nice little community
Nov 27, 2024 · Marianne HamptonWe called late on a Sunday night and needed a place to stay just overnight and the owner was super nice and helpful - he picked up right away. They had a spot open and we were able to hook up and head out early in the morning. We can't thank you enough for accommodating us on a last minute emergency stop!!From what we could tell, it looked like a lot of people live here but it was clean and half paved which made it a breeze to leave after a night of rain. Thanks to the gentleman buffing his car that night that helped us find our spot!
May 10, 2021 · Kim KA friend and I had made a delivery of a cord of wood for one of the temporary residents. I had never been there before, only passed by a million times. It's a quaint quiet little place. Not over the top but not summer run down piece of work either. It was just right, right in the middle. The place was well kept. It was fairly easy to navigate around the ground to find the person we were delivering for. Those that we come into contact with were from our if state for the most part. Very friendly and chatty. The whole place just had a small town know your neighbor good vibe about it. Maybe I'll stay there one day if I ever get a camper or you hauler it something. I felt very comfortable there. I see no reason to not recommend it based on my brief visit. It's a place I wouldn't mind taking the family to some time. Be sure you are able to entertain yourself. Movie houses and shopping malls area good little drive away but the nearby small towns that are local are very adequate for most grown ups. There are many state parks well with in driving distance for the youngsters that are great to visit. Tugalo, Victoria Bryant, Hartwell lake and park, Tallulah falls gorge is relatively nearby, Alpine Helen is less than an hour away. Certainly plenty to do and find in any direction you choose to go.
