Swan Lake St Park Campground Introduce
For local adventurers seeking a picturesque "camping near me" experience in Iowa, Swan Lake State Park Campground, situated at 22811 Swan Lake Trail, Carroll, IA 51401, USA, offers a blend of natural beauty and essential amenities. You can reach them at (712) 792-4614 or their mobile number +1 712-792-4614 for inquiries and reservations. Based on recent customer feedback, Swan Lake State Park Campground presents a scenic environment with opportunities for wildlife viewing and access to facilities, though some aspects, such as campsite leveling and noise control, are worth noting.
The Environment and Location:
The name itself, Swan Lake State Park Campground, highlights the presence of a beautiful lake as a central feature of the park. The reviews corroborate this, with one visitor mentioning a "beautiful view of the lake." Lakes in Iowa often serve as hubs for recreation and provide stunning natural backdrops. The park's location in Carroll, Iowa, suggests a setting within the state's diverse landscapes, potentially offering a mix of open spaces and natural habitats. The sighting of various waterfowl, including pelicans, ducks, and geese, further underscores the lake's ecological significance and its appeal to birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts. Additionally, the unique sighting of bison adds an unexpected element of wildlife viewing, making this campground potentially stand out for those seeking more than just typical lake scenery.
Services and Amenities:
According to visitor feedback, Swan Lake State Park Campground offers some notable amenities. The presence of "playgrounds" suggests that the campground caters to families with children, providing dedicated spaces for recreation and play. The mention of a "nice shower house" indicates that campers have access to facilities for maintaining hygiene, which is a significant convenience, especially for those in tents or RVs without onboard bathrooms. One reviewer specifically mentioned securing a "50 amp full hook up spot for $20," highlighting the availability of sites equipped for RVs needing electricity, water, and sewer connections. The price point mentioned seems reasonable for a full hookup site with a lake view, potentially making it an attractive option for RV travelers looking for "camping near me" with necessary utilities.
However, one camper experienced an issue with their chosen campsite being significantly sloped ("very down hill"), requiring more leveling blocks than they possessed. This suggests that the terrain within the campground might vary, and it could be beneficial to inquire about the specific characteristics of a campsite when making a reservation, especially if you have a camper or RV that requires a level surface. The same reviewer also noted that navigating the campground to find a suitable spot was "a challenge" due to the roads being marked in a way that felt like driving through campsites. This could indicate a layout that might feel a bit congested or less intuitively organized to some visitors.
Another point of concern raised was the lack of clearly posted checkout time. The reviewer had to guess at the time, which could lead to unnecessary stress or potential issues. Clear signage regarding campground rules and procedures, including check-in and check-out times, is generally expected for a smooth visitor experience.
The issue of "incredibly noisy neighbors" experienced by one visitor also highlights a potential challenge in campground environments – noise control. The fact that the noise continued until 2 am despite a request to be quieter and that no campground host was visibly on duty to address the situation is a point of consideration for those seeking a peaceful camping experience. The reviewer's intention to return but to look for a more remote site suggests that the level of noise might vary depending on the location within the campground.
Features and Highlights:
The standout features of Swan Lake State Park Campground appear to be its natural beauty, the presence of Swan Lake itself, and the opportunities for wildlife viewing, including the somewhat unusual bison sighting. The availability of full hookup sites caters specifically to RV campers seeking convenience and necessary utilities. The presence of playgrounds and a shower house adds to the campground's appeal for families and those who appreciate these amenities. The affordable price mentioned for a full hookup site with a lake view is also a significant positive aspect.
However, potential visitors should be aware of the possibility of uneven campsites, the potentially confusing campground layout, the lack of clear information on checkout times, and the potential for noise disturbances depending on neighboring campers and the absence of a visible campground host during late hours.
Promotional Information and Target Audience:
Based on the available information, Swan Lake State Park Campground would likely appeal to a range of local users searching for "camping near me," including:
- Nature Lovers: Those who appreciate scenic lake views and the opportunity to observe diverse wildlife, including waterfowl and bison.
- RV Campers: The availability of 50 amp full hookup sites at a seemingly reasonable price makes it an attractive option for RV travelers.
- Families with Children: The presence of playgrounds provides a dedicated space for kids to enjoy outdoor recreation.
- Budget-Conscious Campers: The reported price for a full hookup site with a lake view suggests affordability.
To effectively promote the campground, Swan Lake State Park could highlight:
- The beautiful setting of Swan Lake and the scenic views available from some campsites.
- The unique opportunity to see a variety of wildlife, including pelicans, ducks, geese, and bison.
- The availability of full hookup campsites, catering to the needs of RV travelers.
- The presence of amenities such as playgrounds and a shower house for added convenience.
It would also be beneficial for the campground management to address the concerns raised in the reviews by:
- Providing more detailed information about the terrain of individual campsites during the reservation process.
- Improving the clarity of campground road markings and site designations.
- Ensuring that check-out times are clearly posted and communicated to all campers.
- Implementing measures for noise control, especially during late hours, and ensuring the visible presence of a campground host for addressing camper concerns.
In conclusion, Swan Lake State Park Campground offers a potentially rewarding "camping near me" experience for local users, characterized by its natural beauty, wildlife viewing opportunities, and essential amenities like full hookups and a shower house. However, it's advisable for potential visitors to be aware of the reported issues regarding campsite leveling, campground navigation, lack of clear checkout information, and potential noise disturbances. By addressing these concerns and highlighting its strengths, Swan Lake State Park Campground can further enhance its appeal to a wider range of campers seeking a scenic Iowa getaway.

Swan Lake St Park Campground Reviews
It is a beautiful place but the spot we picked was very down hill. Didn't have enough blocks to get the nose of the camper level. Seen some pelicans, ducks, geese, and bison while there. Trying to find a spot was a challenge as the roads are marked and felt like we were driving through camp sites. Plus didn't find any where it said the check out time. We guessed 11. We had a 50 amp full hook up spot for $20 and a beautiful view of the lake.
Apr 19, 2025 · Melinda SteeleThe park is beautiful. Playgrounds and shower house are nice. Only complaint would be the incredibly noisy neighbors we had. I asked them to be more quiet at 12:30am, but they continued on until 2am!! Did not see a campground host on duty anywhere. Will probably come back, but will look for a more remote site.
