Tapo Canyon Campground Introduce
Tapo Canyon Campground, located at 4651 Tapo Canyon Rd, Simi Valley, CA 93063, offers a distinctive camping experience that belies its proximity to urban centers. Categorized under 'Camping Near Me' and effectively serving as an 'RV Parks Near Me' destination, this Ventura County Park gem provides a convenient and often peaceful retreat for both RV enthusiasts and tent campers in the greater Los Angeles area. For local users and visitors, Tapo Canyon presents a compelling option for a quick escape into nature without extensive travel.
One of the most striking aspects of Tapo Canyon Campground, frequently highlighted by visitors, is its unexpected tranquility despite being "just minutes away from a city." This creates a unique atmosphere where campers can feel immersed in a natural setting while still having easy access to urban conveniences. The campground is nestled in the foothills and canyons of the Santa Susana Mountains, offering a scenic backdrop of rolling hills and rugged terrain. This natural environment provides opportunities for enjoying sunsets and stargazing, undisturbed by significant city lights. The sites themselves are described as "nice clean sites" with "paved pads" for RVs, and a balance of "shade and open sky," implying a pleasant mix of sun exposure and tree cover, although some reviews suggest "not much shade" at some sites, so this may vary. The park is characterized by its "rugged and rural" feel, providing an authentic outdoor experience.
However, the serene environment has seen a recent shift, as noted by some reviewers. A recurring point of feedback mentions the presence of "Peacocks!" and that "The quiet factor has disappeared" due to their calls. While peacocks can be beautiful, their loud vocalizations can be a significant change for those seeking absolute quiet. This is a crucial environmental detail for prospective campers to consider, as it directly impacts the auditory experience of the campground. Despite this, the campground generally maintains a "very quiet" ambiance outside of potential peacock calls, especially during designated quiet hours which are from 9 PM to 7 AM, with "no generator use" allowed during this time.
The park supports diverse wildlife and features plant life adapted to the local Mediterranean climate, including coastal sage scrub and mixed chaparral. Rattlesnake warnings are posted throughout the camp, indicating the presence of local wildlife that campers should be aware of. The elevation of the campground is approximately 775 feet.
Tapo Canyon Campground is notably well-equipped for a county park, offering a range of amenities that enhance the camping experience for both RV and tent campers. It boasts "16 full hookup sites" for RVs, providing "50/30/20 amp" electrical connections, water, and sewer hookups, which is a significant convenience for RV travelers, especially those visiting the Los Angeles basin where such parks can be "few and far between." Each site also includes a "paved pad, table, fire ring and grill," accommodating up to 6 people and 2 vehicles per site. For additional vehicles, an extra fee applies if allowed and they fit within the site.
Beyond the individual campsites, the campground features several communal amenities. There are "drinking water, flush toilets, showers, a dump station and trash collection," all contributing to a comfortable stay. The showers are coin-operated, a detail worth noting for planning. Reviews frequently praise the cleanliness of the facilities, with one stating, "The bathrooms are very clean." A dedicated "camp host" is on-site and described as "very friendly," actively "washing down sites after people left" and being helpful to campers, even assisting with parking RVs. The presence of a park ranger making daily visits further ensures a well-managed environment.
For recreation, the campground offers a "children's playground that is adjacent," making it "great for the little ones." There's also a "large grassy area" for picnicking and general recreation. An "archery range is private and fenced off," but is "open to the public on Saturdays from 9-1" with a nominal $5 fee, making it a unique feature. Other outdoor activities available in and around the park include hiking, equestrian riding (with an "equestrian arena"), mountain biking, horseshoes, and volleyball (with a court available). Firewood is available for purchase from the camp host, which is a convenient service. Cell service, while not universally perfect (some visitors report "no cell service" or "spotty" reception depending on the carrier, particularly Verizon), is generally considered "good in the area" or at least manageable with a "mobile HomeFi router." However, it is advisable to complete online reservations before arriving, as poor cell service at the campground itself might hinder the process.
Under the 'Camping Near Me' and 'RV Parks Near Me' categories, Tapo Canyon Campground is an excellent choice for local users in Southern California seeking a balance of natural escape and accessibility. Its location in Simi Valley, CA, makes it a strategic base for exploring nearby attractions, including the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library (about 15 minutes away), Corriganville Movie Ranch, Rocky Peak Trail, and various local eateries and shopping options just off the main road. The park is open year-round, making it a flexible option for spontaneous getaways or planned vacations.
Promotional messaging can highlight its appeal as a "great little campground" for families, given the playground and grassy areas. For RV travelers, it can be positioned as a valuable find due to its full hookups and convenient location in an area with limited RV park options. Despite the recent influx of peacocks, the campground maintains its appeal for those who appreciate quiet evenings (after quiet hours) and the simple joys of camping. The positive reviews regarding cleanliness and the friendly camp host are strong selling points that foster a welcoming atmosphere. The blend of basic camping amenities with recreational features like the archery range and proximity to hiking trails makes it an attractive destination for diverse outdoor enthusiasts. The ability to make reservations online via the Ventura County Parks website is also a convenient feature for planning trips.
In summary, Tapo Canyon Campground offers a convenient, clean, and amenity-rich camping experience very close to urban amenities. While the presence of peacocks may affect the 'quiet factor' for some, its overall features, including full hookups, well-maintained facilities, and friendly staff, make it a highly recommended choice for a camping adventure near Simi Valley, CA.

Tapo Canyon Campground Reviews
Great little campground. Hard to believe it is just minutes away from a city. Very quiet. Nice clean sites. Camp host was very friendly, and was washing down sites after people left. There is a children's playground that is adjacent. The archery range is private and fenced off. Overall, a great place to spend the night.
Apr 12, 2021 · Steve RoseThis is our go to RV stay when we're in the LA area visiting our kids. RV parks are few and far between in the LA basin and two canyons fits the Bill for us .Unfortunately, the park and campground has been invaded by Peacocks! The quiet factor has disappeared☹️Perhaps the county can do something about them.
Apr 11, 2025 · J Scott LumsdenGreat spot for an overnighter, especially if you want to visit the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library & Museum. Very small & basic. No wifi or cable, spotty cell service, & not much to do, so definitely a short-term destination. Clean & pretty, with level sites among trees. Friendly on-site staff. We stayed in our 27' Class C in mid-February.
Mar 20, 2019 · Sharon StewartTapo Canyon campground was a perfect campground for our visit to Simi valley and the Ronald Reagan museum and library. In addition to the campground's convenient location to Simi valley, it was off the beaten path enough to enjoy the peaceful surroundings nature.Although there was no cell service we had no problem staying connected with Starlink.Having a full hook-up site with sewer drainage allowed us to enjoy showers and hand wash a bit of laundry. The cat birds were vocal and entertaining.Tapo Canyon campground is a great value and definitely worth visiting.
Apr 11, 2024 · Peggy J (SC senorita)Very nice, small campground. Very pretty surroundings. Full hookups, and very clean. Great playground nearby for the kids. We loved watching the local peacocks wander around in the morning.Only downside was that there ZERO service unless you have Starlink. We had no cell, no internet, and no TV stations. It's great to disconnect from time to time, yes, but we work remotely and had to trek into Simi Valley to work at the library or coffee shop.In all, awesome place for a short stay !
