Malibu Creek State Park Campground

Agoura Hills, CA 91301, USA

4.0
This campground was wonderful. It had an amazing pool in the creek, but be forewarned. It's really cold. The campsites are all conveniently close to the restrooms, and they all have fire pits. There is lots of nature, such as toads, rabbits, and squirrels. I highly recommend this campground. 5/5.Campsite price: $47. A little bit steep, but worth it. - Rain Zhang (Rain)

Malibu Creek State Park Campground Introduce

Malibu Creek State Park Campground, located in Agoura Hills, CA 91301, USA, is a highly regarded destination for those searching for "Camping Near Me" in Southern California. Situated within the expansive and scenic Malibu Creek State Park, it offers a refreshing escape into nature while remaining relatively accessible from the greater Los Angeles area. You can reach the campground at (818) 880-0363 or +1 818-880-0363.

Environment

The environment at Malibu Creek State Park Campground is a significant draw, often described as "beautiful" and featuring "lots of nature." The campground is nestled within 8,000 acres of rugged, mostly virgin land in the Santa Monica Mountains, making it a "Crown Jewel" of the range. The landscape is characterized by diverse habitats, including oak woodlands, chaparral, and riparian areas along the fourteen-mile Malibu Creek. Dramatic volcanic rock gorges, scenic pools, and breathtaking views of the Las Virgenes Valley and Malibu Canyon add to its allure. Visitors can expect to encounter abundant wildlife, including toads, rabbits, squirrels, various bird species (over 400), and occasionally larger mammals like deer, coyotes, and even bobcats. While offering a sense of immersion in nature, it's worth noting that due to its proximity to the city, campers may occasionally hear urban sounds such as helicopters or emergency vehicles, which can break the natural ambiance for some. However, general road noise is not typically an issue. The park is especially vibrant and green in winter and spring after rains, though condensation can be significant year-round, requiring campers to be prepared for damp conditions.

Services and Features

Malibu Creek State Park Campground provides a range of essential services and features for campers. It offers 63 individual campsites designed for tents, trailers, and RVs (up to 30 feet in length). Each campsite is generally level and comes equipped with a picnic table and a fire ring with a grate, perfect for cooking and enjoying a campfire (fire conditions permitting). Restrooms with flush toilets are conveniently spaced throughout the campground and are reported to be clean. Showers are also available, though they are coin-operated, requiring tokens (reportedly $1 for approximately 3-4 minutes of hot water), which some campers find annoying but functional. It's important to note that the campground does not offer electrical, water, or sewer hookups at individual sites for RVs. However, there is an RV waste (dump) station available near the park's main entrance kiosk. A unique feature highlighted by a happy camper is an "amazing pool in the creek," offering a cold but refreshing natural swimming experience. The park also boasts a vast network of over 15 miles of streamside trails for hiking, running, mountain biking, and horseback riding, leading to scenic vistas, the historic MASH TV show set, and the famous Rock Pool. There's also Century Lake for kayaking and fishing. While cell service can be spotty, and there is no park-wide Wi-Fi, the focus here is on disconnecting and enjoying the natural surroundings. Accessible campsites (#12, #30, #44, and #54), restrooms, and showers are also available.

Community and Lifestyle

The community at Malibu Creek State Park Campground is typically composed of families, groups, and individuals seeking an outdoor experience. The sites, while offering enough space for 3-4 tents and up to 8 people, are noted to be "pretty close to each other," which can lead to hearing neighbors. This popularity, being "so close to the city," means the campground can be quite busy, especially on weekends and holidays. The staff at the gate are described as "serious employees" who also work diligently to maintain the space, contributing to a well-run environment. The lifestyle at the campground is centered around enjoying nature, hiking the extensive trails, and engaging in outdoor activities. Despite its proximity to urban areas, the park largely maintains a serene atmosphere, allowing for relaxation and connection with nature. For those who embrace the rustic nature of camping, including managing condensation and the token system for showers, the experience is generally positive and family-friendly. The presence of abundant wildlife, such as toads, rabbits, and squirrels, adds to the natural appeal and provides opportunities for observation.

Promotional Information and Considerations

Malibu Creek State Park Campground is a year-round camping destination, making reservations highly recommended, especially during peak seasons. The campsite price of $47 (as reviewed, may vary) is considered by some to be "a little bit steep" or "outrageously priced" compared to other campgrounds that might offer more space or free showers. However, many find it "worth it" due to its prime location at "Malibu's doorstep" and the quality of the staff and natural environment. The ease of access to excellent hiking trails, a short scenic drive to the beach (such as Dume Point), and proximity to unique historical sites like the MASH set are significant draws. Visitors should be warned about the prevalence of poison oak throughout the park, necessitating caution, especially with children. Essential items to bring include plenty of water, sunscreen, a hat, hiking boots, a basic first aid kit, and gear prepared for potential wet conditions due to condensation. Dogs are permitted in the campground, day-use picnic areas, parking lots, and paved roads but must be on a six-foot leash and are not allowed on backcountry trails or in the water. Campfires are permitted in fire rings under low fire danger conditions. Overall, Malibu Creek State Park Campground is an excellent choice for those searching for "Camping Near Me" who prioritize a beautiful natural setting, extensive outdoor activities, and a clean, well-maintained environment, provided they are prepared for the pricing structure and some of the park's specific amenities and rules.
