The Campground at Strouds Run State Park Introduce
For local residents in the Athens, Ohio area seeking a tranquil "camping near me" experience immersed in nature, The Campground at Strouds Run State Park, located on State Park Rd, Athens, OH 45701, USA, offers a charming and well-maintained option. Based on recent customer reviews, this campground provides a peaceful retreat with convenient access to outdoor activities and nearby amenities. If you're looking for a getaway that combines natural beauty with a touch of simplicity, Strouds Run State Park might be the perfect local destination for your next camping adventure.
One visitor described their one-night camping trip as enjoyable, noting the campground's nicely kept and quiet atmosphere. Its proximity to essential amenities is highlighted as a significant convenience. For those who enjoy exploring on foot, the campground boasts well-established hiking trails, although one reviewer mentioned that the markings could be improved. Despite this minor point, the trails offer an opportunity to immerse oneself in the natural surroundings of Strouds Run State Park.
The campground operates as a non-electric facility with a self-check-in station, emphasizing a more primitive camping experience. However, essential amenities such as potable water and a dump station for self-contained RV units are available for campers' convenience. This setup caters to those who prefer a more rustic camping experience while still providing basic necessities. It's important for potential visitors to be aware of the non-electric nature of the campsites when planning their stay and packing accordingly.
A major highlight of the area is Dow Lake, which is described as excellent for kayaking and fishing. While the campground itself is not directly on the lakefront, access is available, although transporting equipment like kayaks may require a cart or a short drive. The allure of spending time on the water, whether paddling along the serene surface or casting a line in hopes of a catch, adds significant appeal to this camping destination.
The condition and size of the camping pads are noted as good and respectable, providing a stable and comfortable base for tents. One reviewer did mention an "interesting" placement of the fire ring on their particular site, suggesting some variability in campsite layouts. However, the overall impression of the camping infrastructure is positive.
Another visitor who stayed at The Campground at Strouds Run State Park was "pleasantly surprised" by its smaller, more basic nature. While acknowledging the absence of electric hookups and showers, they found the pit toilets to be clean and surprisingly odor-free due to the use of vanilla air fresheners. This attention to even basic amenities suggests a commitment to maintaining a decent standard for guests.
This reviewer also opted to rent one of the campground's two primitive cabins, which they found to be a decent option at a reasonable price of $45 per night. The cabins are equipped with two sets of bunk beds with basic mattresses, providing a step up from tent camping while still maintaining a rustic feel. Renters should be aware that they need to bring their own bedding and lighting for the cabins. Each cabin site includes a couple of picnic tables and a fire pit, enhancing the outdoor living experience.
A significant advantage noted was that the campground was not crowded during a pleasant late April weekend, suggesting a more secluded and peaceful atmosphere compared to larger, more bustling campgrounds. Its proximity to Athens is also a major benefit, offering easy access to food and supplies if needed. One reviewer recommended purchasing drier wood at a local Kroger rather than relying on what was available at the on-site boathouse, providing a helpful tip for fellow campers.
The overall sentiment from this reviewer is a strong recommendation for those seeking a simpler camping experience. The combination of the quiet environment, access to Dow Lake and hiking trails, and the availability of affordable primitive cabins makes The Campground at Strouds Run State Park a compelling "camping near me" option for those who appreciate a more natural and less commercialized setting.
One potential drawback mentioned is the marginal cell signal with Verizon, which might be a consideration for those who need to stay connected. However, for many seeking a true escape into nature, limited connectivity can be seen as a benefit, allowing for a more immersive and undisturbed experience.

Its quiet and nicely kept environment, coupled with access to hiking trails and Dow Lake for kayaking and fishing, provides ample opportunities for outdoor recreation. The Campground at Strouds Run State Park Reviews
I stayed for a one night camping trip, nicely kept and quiet campground that is close to anything you might need. The hiking trails are well established, but not extremely well marked. The campground is non electric, self check in station, but has potable water and a dump station for self contained units. Dow lake is great.for kayaking and fishing, but you will either have to use a cart to transport or drive to the lake from the campground. The pads are in good condition and respectable size, placement of the fire ring was interesting on the site I stayed on. Great place to get away, marginal cell signal with Verizon.
Apr 30, 2024 · Jeffrey ChandlerAlthough pretty basic, I was pleasantly surprised by this smaller campground. While it lacks electric and showers, the pit toilets were clean and didn't smell as they have nice vanilla air fresheners inside them. I rented one of their two primitive cabins which was decent for only $45 a night. They have two sets of bunks which have basic mattresses. You'll need to bring your own bedding and lighting. The site had a couple of picnic tables and of course a fire pit. The place also wasn't crowded at all for a really nice late April weekend. It's also really close to Athens in case you wanted to grab food and supplies. Found drier wood at Kroger which is recommended over what they had on site at the boathouse. Overall, this place is a great option for those looking for something a little more simple. Recommended!

Jul 27, 2024 · Matthew NeubeckNice little campground with great access to trails. Camping is first come first serve at $20 a night. Not very busy when we were there in a Friday. Would come again.
