three lakes WMA campground Introduce
For local users seeking a more rugged and self-sufficient "camping near me" experience, the Three Lakes WMA (Wildlife Management Area) campground, located on the Florida Trail in Kenansville, FL 34739, USA, offers a primitive camping option. Based on customer reviews and descriptions, this campground provides very basic facilities within a natural setting, primarily catering to hunters and those comfortable with a more rustic outdoor experience. It's important for those considering this location through a "camping near me" platform to understand the nature of primitive camping offered here.
The environment of the Three Lakes WMA campground is within a Wildlife Management Area, suggesting a natural setting likely characterized by Florida's diverse ecosystems, potentially including forests, wetlands, and open spaces. Its location along the Florida Trail indicates opportunities for hiking and immersion in nature. One review mentions it's a "hunt camp," implying that the surrounding environment is suitable for hunting activities during designated seasons. The fact that it's used by hunters and sees increased activity on weekends aligns with this. The availability of three different primitive campgrounds within Three Lakes WMA further suggests a relatively expansive natural area. For locals looking for "camping near me" that offers a direct connection with nature, away from more developed campgrounds, this could be appealing. However, it's crucial to note that this is primitive camping, so the focus is on the natural surroundings rather than extensive amenities.
The services at the Three Lakes WMA campground are explicitly described as very basic. According to reviews, only "vault toilets" are provided, which are non-flushing pit toilets. Crucially, there are no trash cans, picnic tables, potable water sources on-site, or hookups for RVs. Campers are expected to be entirely self-sufficient, bringing in everything they need and taking all their trash out with them. This lack of amenities is a key characteristic of primitive camping. However, one review notes that it's about 30 minutes away from towns with facilities like Walmart, Publix, Planet Fitness, and gas stations, offering some convenience for resupply or emergencies. The existence of three different primitive campgrounds within the WMA, each with a "standard primitive restroom (2 toilets over holes in the ground)," reinforces the basic nature of the facilities. There are no showers or other resources provided, emphasizing the need for campers to be fully prepared.
The primary feature of the Three Lakes WMA campground is its primitive nature and its location within a Wildlife Management Area along the Florida Trail. This makes it particularly attractive to hikers on the trail, hunters during hunting seasons, and individuals who prefer a more secluded and natural camping experience without the conveniences of developed campgrounds. The fact that it's offered "free of charge during the hunting seasons" is a significant feature for hunters. For those using a "camping near me" platform and specifically seeking primitive or free camping options, this campground would be of interest. The proximity to nature and the opportunity for activities like hiking and hunting (in season) are key features. The social aspect mentioned in one review ("seeing friends I made last year!") suggests a community of like-minded campers who appreciate this type of environment.
Based on the provided information, there is no mention of specific promotional offers. The fact that camping is "free of charge during the hunting seasons" could be considered a significant benefit for hunters. For other times of the year, or for non-hunters, it's unclear if there are any fees. Local users interested in "camping near me" at Three Lakes WMA should check with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC), which manages WMAs, for the most up-to-date information on regulations, fees (if any, outside of hunting seasons), and any specific guidelines for camping in the area.
It's important for anyone considering Three Lakes WMA campground through a "camping near me" search to be aware that "primitive" truly means basic. Campers need to be experienced in Leave No Trace principles, as they are responsible for their own waste management, water, and comfort. The mention of it being a "hunt camp" also implies that during hunting seasons, the area may be more active with hunters, and certain regulations or safety precautions might be in place. Being aware of the hunting seasons and regulations within Three Lakes WMA is crucial for anyone planning to camp here.
For local users who are well-prepared and seeking a free or very low-cost "camping near me" option that offers direct access to nature and the Florida Trail, Three Lakes WMA campground could be a good fit. The proximity to basic amenities about 30 minutes away provides a degree of convenience without compromising the primitive camping experience at the site itself. However, those accustomed to developed campgrounds with facilities like showers, picnic tables, and potable water should be aware that these are not available here.
In conclusion, Three Lakes WMA campground offers a primitive "camping near me" experience for those in the Kenansville, FL area. Its environment within a Wildlife Management Area along the Florida Trail is ideal for nature lovers and hunters. The services are extremely basic, limited to vault toilets, requiring campers to be fully self-sufficient. A key feature is the free camping during hunting seasons. Local users looking for a no-frills, nature-focused camping option should consider Three Lakes WMA, keeping in mind the need for self-sufficiency and awareness of hunting seasons. Further information regarding regulations and potential fees outside of hunting season should be obtained from the FWC.

three lakes WMA campground Reviews
2nd winter here - seeing friends I made last year! Just vault toilets provided (no trash cans, picnic tables, potable water, hookups, etc.) but about 30 minutes to Walmart, Publix, Planet Fitness, gas.Off Canoe Creek Rd. It's a hunt camp so weekends get busier.
Jan 28, 2022 · Vicki RunyanThree Lakes has 3 different primitive campgrounds for use by hunters free of charge during the hunting seasons. Each has a standard primitive restroom (2 toilets over holes in the ground). No showers or other resources so you need to bring and take everything in yourself.
Dec 31, 2022 · JRodCCBeautiful place lots to explore. Enough room not to be right next to someone like in a developed camp. Free of charge to camp here. Has 2 vault toilets looked pretty clean. There's water spigot but I would only use it to wash things off as it's pretty brown. No trash it's pack it in and pack it out but there's garbage cans right down the road at the boat launch north of camp. There's a spot to clean fish as well behind the hunters check in place.
