Tippy Dam Campground Introduce
For local users exploring "camping near me" options in the Wellston, Michigan area, Tippy Dam Campground, located at 17974 Old House Rd, offers a basic camping experience near the Tippy Dam and the Manistee River. This campground provides sites suitable for both tent and RV camping, catering to those seeking a more traditional outdoor adventure in the region. However, recent customer reviews provide important insights into the conditions and amenities offered, which potential visitors should carefully consider when making their plans.
The Natural Environment Around Tippy Dam
Tippy Dam Campground's primary appeal lies in its proximity to the Tippy Dam and the renowned Manistee River. This area of Michigan is known for its natural beauty, offering opportunities for fishing, particularly for salmon and steelhead, as the Manistee River is a popular fishing destination. The presence of the dam itself can create unique scenic views and potential access points to different parts of the river. The surrounding environment is likely characterized by woodlands and the natural landscape typical of northern Michigan, offering a setting for outdoor recreation and enjoying nature.
The Manistee River is a significant feature of the area, attracting anglers and those who enjoy being near the water. Campers at Tippy Dam Campground can potentially benefit from easy access to the river for fishing and enjoying the riverside environment. The area around the dam might also offer opportunities for hiking or exploring the natural surroundings.
Services and Amenities: A Critical Overview Based on Reviews
Customer reviews paint a concerning picture regarding the services and amenities at Tippy Dam Campground. One reviewer described a "rustic" cabin as an "unfinished storage shed with 2 cots," lacking flooring and finished walls, with a strong chemical odor from the raw OSB. This individual found the conditions so poor that they had to sleep in their car. This suggests that the cabin accommodations may not meet the expectations of those seeking a comfortable shelter.
Regarding the general campground facilities, reviewers noted that the sites have "basic stuff," including a fire ring and a picnic table, which are standard for many campgrounds. However, significant issues were raised about the shower and toilet areas, described as "REALLY BAD," "dirty, full of bugs and cob webs, other people's wet gear," and having an unpleasant smell. These comments indicate a need for significant improvement in the cleanliness and maintenance of these essential facilities.
Furthermore, a reviewer highlighted a policy of charging for services that are often included at other campgrounds. This includes a fee of $5.00 to use the freezer for freezing caught fish and another $5.00 to use a cleaning table for cleaning fish. This pay-per-use approach for basic amenities is an important factor for potential campers to be aware of.
Key Features and Considerations Based on Available Information
Based on the limited positive information and the critical customer feedback, the key features and important considerations for Tippy Dam Campground include:
- Proximity to Tippy Dam and Manistee River: A key draw for anglers and those wanting to be near the river.
- Basic Campsites: Offering fire rings and picnic tables for tent and RV campers.
- Rustic Cabins (with significant concerns): Cabin accommodations appear to be very basic and potentially uninhabitable based on one review.
- Potentially Poor Shower and Toilet Facilities: Described as dirty, buggy, and smelly in customer reviews.
- Extra Charges for Amenities: Fees are applied for using the freezer and fish cleaning table.
Exploring the Wellston and Manistee River Area
Despite the concerns raised about the campground itself, the Wellston and Manistee River area offers several attractions for outdoor enthusiasts. Local users might be interested in:
- Fishing in the Manistee River: Renowned for its salmon and steelhead runs, the river is a major draw for anglers.
- Tippy Dam: A significant hydroelectric dam on the Manistee River, potentially offering scenic views and access points to the river.
- Hiking and Trails: The surrounding area likely offers opportunities for hiking and exploring the natural landscapes of northern Michigan.
- Boating and Water Activities: Depending on the river's accessibility near the campground, there might be opportunities for boating or kayaking.
- Huron-Manistee National Forests: The campground is likely situated within or near these national forests, offering vast areas for outdoor recreation.
The natural attractions of the area remain a strong point, even if the campground facilities have received negative feedback.
Important Considerations and Recommendations for Local Users
For local users considering Tippy Dam Campground based on its "camping near me" listing, it is crucial to weigh the potential benefits of its location near the Manistee River against the significant concerns raised in recent customer reviews. The negative feedback regarding the "rustic" cabins, the poor condition of the shower and toilet facilities, and the extra charges for basic amenities should not be overlooked.
If you are primarily interested in tent or RV camping and are prepared for very basic facilities, and if proximity to the Manistee River for fishing is your top priority, Tippy Dam Campground might still be an option. However, it would be highly advisable to contact the campground directly using the provided phone numbers, (231) 848-4448 or +1 231-848-4448, to inquire about the current conditions of the facilities and the specific costs for any amenities you might need. Asking for recent updates or assurances regarding cleanliness and the state of the cabins and shower areas would be a prudent step before making a reservation.
Given the strong negative feedback, local users might want to explore other "camping near me" options in the Wellston or surrounding areas that have received more positive reviews regarding their facilities and overall guest experience. While Tippy Dam Campground's location may be appealing to some, the reported conditions suggest that it may not be suitable for those seeking a comfortable or well-maintained camping environment. Proceed with caution and thorough inquiry if considering a stay at Tippy Dam Campground.

Tippy Dam Campground Reviews
Horrible place! What they called a "rustic" cabin was nothing but an unfinished storage shed with 2 cots. There was no flooring and nothing on the walls but raw OSB. The smell of new OSB was so strong I had to sleep in my car. It's chemicals and formaldehyde. The shower and toilet area was dirty. Awful experience!
Apr 22, 2025 · Max HSites have basic stuff, fire ring and picnic table. Shower rooms are REALLY BAD, I mean BAD. Dirty, full of bugs and cob webs, other people's wet gear, and the smell, oh don't forget about the smell. Also they charge for everything, I mean everything. Need to use the freezer to freeze your fresh catch! $5.00! Need to use cleaning table to clean your own fish! $5.00.
Jan 22, 2025 · Aaron YoungbloodWe rented a cabin last minute when our RV broke down. Let me tell you I'm glad it broke down! We had such a great trip here! The owners were amazing hosts. The area was amazing to see I loved the dam and all the walking trails that are in the area! The price just can't be beat. We are already looking forward to coming back!!
Jul 22, 2024 · Dan Biedernice campground. Stayed for one night to fish the good ol tippy dam. Lots of space on tent campsites loved the privacy of the corner tent spots. Bathrooms need some work
Sep 26, 2024 · Mac ZeroStayed here in Augest and slept in the car by choice. Couldn't even find the bathrooms on the map. What we thought were the bathrooms has a major stink of weed coming through the air. We decided to go to the office and ask the kid working at late late night. We were alone in the shop for enough time we could of cleaned them out, then sent out the back door to a yard that connected a bunch of bad shaped building and nice cars in the drive ways. One house you could watch TV through the window with their kids who were at almost 12am was hooping and hollaring.Get to the bathroom and I had to at 5'7" height, 90° my legs just to sit on the toilet. At least they provided a scratch art wall and a switch blade to doodle will trying to use the bathroom (which I wouldnt if touched with a glove). The place is beyond dark and gets worst the farther back you go. People in and out at all hours of the night. The dam is a half a mile from the park entrance and if you try to get there from their property then you'll be walking over a mile just to not trespass on surrounding properties or you can stand at the fence and look at it from a 1/4 of a mile.Campsite had trash on the ground and trash in the pit. We well reserved the spot ahead of time so it wasn't last minute. No excuses. Country ghetto not worried about the people staying there imo. At least it's cheap I guess 🤷, I wonder why. Got out of there before the sun came up the next morning. Won't be back for sure!
