This campground offers a range of amenities and services for RV travelers and those seeking a local outdoor getaway.
Topeka / Capital City KOA Journey aims to provide a pleasant stay for visitors, as reflected in some of the recent feedback from fellow campers. One reviewer described it as a "lovely little campground" that was "very clean." They specifically highlighted the RV sites with full hookups and the presence of a small patio area. For pet owners, the well-kept dog areas were a significant positive, noting the absence of excessive pet waste, a welcome change from some other campgrounds. Families with children may appreciate the presence of a decent-sized playground. The cleanliness of the restrooms, located near the laundry facilities, was also noted as a positive aspect of the campground. This reviewer expressed their intention to return, particularly looking forward to using the pool during a future fall visit, and appreciated the campground's location tucked away from the main road, offering a sense of peace and a "cute appeal." They recommended it as a good stopping point for RV travelers.
However, it's important to consider all feedback when making your decision. Another recent guest reported a less satisfactory experience. While they found the campground itself to be "adequate" and the bathrooms "clean," their disappointment stemmed from the campground's checkout policy. Despite the campground appearing mostly empty and being off-season, they were charged for a full extra night due to a late checkout on their final day. This guest felt the charge was "unreasonable and unnecessary" given the low occupancy and time of year. They advised future visitors to be aware of the strict checkout time and potential charges for any late departures, even when the campground is not full.
Based on available information, Topeka / Capital City KOA Journey offers the following potential environment, services, and features for local campers:
Environment:
The campground is described as being "tucked back off the main road," suggesting a quieter and more secluded atmosphere compared to locations directly on a busy thoroughfare. The presence of trees and potentially green spaces contributes to a "lovely little campground" feel. While not explicitly stated, the KOA Journey designation often implies a convenient stopover for travelers, while still offering a pleasant environment for a short or longer stay. The mention of a pool (though closed in the fall by one reviewer) indicates an outdoor recreational amenity that enhances the environment during warmer months.
Services and Amenities:
- RV Sites with Full Hookups: As mentioned by a satisfied guest, the campground offers RV sites equipped with water, electricity, and sewer connections, catering to the needs of RV travelers.
- Patio Area (at some RV sites): Some sites may include a small patio, providing a dedicated outdoor space for relaxation and enjoyment.
- Clean Restrooms: Both reviewers mentioned the cleanliness of the bathroom facilities, a crucial aspect for a comfortable camping experience.
- Laundry Facilities: The availability of laundry services allows for longer stays without the inconvenience of off-site laundry.
- Playground: Families with children can take advantage of the "decent size" playground for entertainment.
- Dog Areas: Pet owners will appreciate the well-kept dog areas, providing designated spaces for their furry companions.
- Pool: Although seasonal, the presence of a pool suggests a recreational option for warmer weather.
- Potential for Wi-Fi: While not explicitly mentioned in the reviews, KOA campgrounds often offer Wi-Fi access for guests. It would be advisable to confirm this directly with the campground.
- Camp Store (Likely): KOA campgrounds typically have a camp store offering basic necessities, snacks, and camping supplies. Again, it's best to confirm the availability and offerings with the campground directly.
Features:
- Convenient Location: Being in Topeka, the campground offers accessibility to local attractions, services, and amenities in the capital city of Kansas. Its "tucked back" location provides a balance of convenience and a quieter setting.
- Pet-Friendly: The positive feedback regarding the dog areas indicates a welcoming environment for pets.
- Family-Friendly: The presence of a playground suggests an effort to cater to families with children.
- KOA Brand Standards: As a KOA Journey campground, it likely adheres to certain standards of quality and service associated with the Kampgrounds of America network.
Promotional Information:
Based on the provided information, there are no specific promotional offers mentioned in the reviews. However, as a KOA campground, Topeka / Capital City KOA Journey may participate in KOA's national rewards program (KOA Rewards) or offer seasonal specials and discounts. Local residents are encouraged to:
- Check the official KOA website: Look for the Topeka / Capital City KOA Journey page for any listed promotions or discounts.
- Contact the campground directly: Call (800) 562-4793 or +1 800-562-4793 to inquire about any local resident rates, seasonal offers, or special packages.
- Inquire about KOA Rewards: If you are a frequent camper, the KOA Rewards program can offer discounts and benefits.
- Follow their social media (if any): Campgrounds sometimes announce promotions on their social media channels.
Important Considerations:
The review highlighting the strict late checkout policy is a crucial point for potential visitors to be aware of. It is essential to confirm the checkout time upon arrival and plan accordingly to avoid any unexpected charges. While one reviewer experienced an issue with a late checkout fee despite low occupancy, another had a very positive experience, emphasizing cleanliness and amenities. This suggests that overall, the campground offers a decent base for camping, but adherence to their policies, particularly regarding checkout times, is strictly enforced.
For local users searching for 'camping near me' in the Topeka area, Topeka / Capital City KOA Journey presents a viable option with RV sites, clean facilities, and some family-friendly and pet-friendly features. However, it is recommended to contact the campground directly for the most up-to-date information on pricing, availability, and any current promotions, as well as to clarify their policies, especially regarding check-in and check-out times.

Topeka / Capital City KOA Journey Reviews
We stayed at Topeka/Capital City KOA Journey for two nights and were disappointed by our experience. While the campground was mostly empty (it appears to cater primarily to full-time residents), we were charged for a full extra night because we checked out late on the final day. Given the lack of occupancy and being off-season, this felt unreasonable and unnecessary. The campground itself was adequate, the bathrooms were clean, but the inflexible checkout policy left a sour taste. Be aware that even with minimal occupancy, they enforce a strict checkout time and charge for any late departure.
Mar 21, 2025 · Nicole Monti di Sopra HulligerCame for a quick weekend trip while visiting family. We were pleasantly surprised! A lovely little campground! Very clean! We had a rv site with full hookups and a little patio. The dog areas are well kept as well and really didn’t run in to little dog bombs everywhere which is a nice change from other places! Kids liked the playground and it’s a decent size too. We even used the restrooms by the laundry and it was all very clean and well kept. As it’s fall we missed the pool but looking forward to that maybe on our next trip. We definitely will be coming back here! We liked how it was tucked back off the main road and had a cute appeal. I’d recommend to anyone needing a good place to stop with their rv!
Nov 10, 2024 · Katie GramerEverything about this place was great 👍 Unfortunately I was there for a couple of Kansas storms which was not an issue no power outages and storm debris was cleared up ASAP.. would be great to have personnel around for folks working extended hours. Really appreciate the service they provide 👍🇱🇷
Apr 08, 2025 · Kevin BlehmStayed here a couple nights while going and coming back from a trip further west . The rustic cabin (like most KOA) is no frills, but perfect for a good nights rest in a quiet atmosphere . The campground was packed, but super quiet at night and early morning. Coffee was provided in the office . Front desk staff , which i am assuming was owner, was extremely helpful, thoughtful and friendly. We had great night rests and definitely would book again if going through.
Oct 19, 2024 · Susan HabelNot EV friendly. “We aren’t setup for electric vehicles.” My plan for travel suddenly changed today due to heavy rains. My fifth wheel was stuck in the mud upon departure from my home. I called to explain that I would not be bringing my fifth wheel and to ask if I could have a site with 20amps, so I could plug in my hybrid using my portable house charger instead, which I do often for car camping at RV parks. I was denied. Will never stay at this KOA ever again.
