Tower Rock Campground, Shawnee National Forest Introduce
For local residents in the vicinity of Elizabethtown, Illinois, seeking a unique "camping near me" experience, Tower Rock Campground within the Shawnee National Forest offers a distinctive opportunity for a riverside retreat. Located at Tower Rock Rd, Elizabethtown, IL 62931, USA, this campground, as highlighted by customer reviews, provides an intimate camping setting directly on the banks of the Ohio River, with picturesque views and access to both natural beauty and recreational activities. While the campground is noted for its limited number of sites and basic amenities, its prime location and the potential for a serene escape make it a noteworthy option for local outdoor enthusiasts.
The environment of Tower Rock Campground is undeniably its most significant feature. Situated right on the Ohio River, the campground offers campers stunning views, particularly of the Kentucky landscape across the river. The experience of watching the ferry and other boats traversing the waterway adds a unique charm to the setting. The limited number of campsites, reported as only 4 or 5, contributes to a more secluded and potentially quieter atmosphere, especially appealing for those seeking tranquility in nature. Being located within the Shawnee National Forest, campers can also expect to be surrounded by the natural beauty of southern Illinois, although the immediate campsite area along the river might have less tree cover, as one review mentions "not much shade" for at least one site. However, the proximity to the river and the open views likely compensate for the lack of dense foliage directly at the campsites. The presence of the Tower Rock itself, with an overlook trail, adds another dimension to the natural environment, offering opportunities for exploration and panoramic views of the surrounding area.
In terms of services, Tower Rock Campground offers basic but essential amenities. A significant point highlighted in a customer review is that the camping is free, which is a considerable advantage for budget-conscious local campers. Each of the few campsites is equipped with a fire ring for campfires, a lantern pole for hanging lights, and a picnic table for convenient outdoor dining. Sanitary facilities are provided in the form of a clean pit toilet on the premises. It's important for potential visitors to note that "pit toilets" are a more rustic amenity compared to flush toilets and showers, which are not mentioned in the reviews. The presence of a boat ramp is another key service, providing direct access to the Ohio River for those interested in boating, fishing, or simply enjoying being on the water. The combination of free camping and essential facilities like fire rings, picnic tables, and a boat ramp makes it an appealing option for those comfortable with a more primitive camping experience focused on the natural surroundings.
The features of Tower Rock Campground are largely centered around its unique location and the recreational opportunities it affords. The direct access to the Ohio River is paramount, allowing for fishing, boating, and simply enjoying the sights and sounds of the river. The small number of campsites ensures a more private and intimate camping experience. The inclusion of a fire ring, lantern pole, and picnic table at each site enhances the basic comfort and functionality of the camping area. The presence of the Tower Rock overlook trail offers an additional activity for campers, providing an opportunity for a short hike and rewarding views of the river and the surrounding landscape. The fact that the campground was empty during one reviewer's mid-November visit suggests that it might be less crowded during the off-season, offering an even more secluded experience. However, another reviewer who visited in mid-November also recommended bringing tick repellent, indicating that insects can still be a consideration even in cooler months. The combination of free camping, river access, a boat ramp, and a scenic overlook trail makes Tower Rock Campground a distinctive destination for local "camping near me" seekers who appreciate natural beauty and basic amenities.
As explicitly stated in a customer review, camping at Tower Rock Campground is free. This lack of camping fees is a significant promotional aspect, making it an exceptionally budget-friendly option for local users looking for an outdoor getaway. While there are no mentions of other specific promotions or discounts, the fact that it is free camping is a substantial incentive in itself. Local residents can take advantage of this no-cost opportunity to enjoy the natural beauty of the Shawnee National Forest and the Ohio River. Tower Rock Campground, Shawnee National Forest Reviews
4 spots, right in the Ohio River with a gorgeous view of Kentucky beyond. I really enjoyed watching the ferry and other boats on the river. Campsites have a fire ring, lantern pole, and picnic table. Clean pit toilet on the premises was a plus. I went there in mid November. I would suggest you bring tick repellent.
Nov 17, 2023 · Vicky McNattinFree camping. Very few sites like maybe 4-5! Was empty when we were there. Pit toilets. Very clean! Has boat ramp and a overlook trail on tower rock.
Oct 20, 2023 · Janalee WyrickHard to give an honest review of Tower Rock State Park it's a place that if explored amazing things can be seen and found but people normally don't see these things here at Tower Rock because access to them is difficult unless you know the area
Sep 01, 2019 · Jacob WheelerBeautiful clean area on the water. Secluded and spacious camping areas. No electrical hook up if that's what your looking for. Primitive camping area. Plenty of trails and sites to see around the area.
Mar 28, 2021 · Destiny FisherGate's always locked every time I make the journey to come camp here... Boat ramp is dry as a bone, April 7, 2023. What seems to be the issue here??
