Toyon Campground Introduce
For those searching "Camping Near Me" with a preference for a tranquil, nature-immersed experience near Redwood City, California, **Toyon Campground** offers a compelling option, albeit with some important current considerations. Located on Campground Trail, Redwood City, CA 94062, USA, Toyon Campground is a significant feature within the larger Huddart Park, a popular destination managed by San Mateo County Parks. This campground is particularly known for its setting amidst the redwoods and its access to extensive hiking opportunities.
The **environment** at Toyon Campground is characterized by its lush, forested surroundings. Guests can expect to be enveloped by towering redwoods and ferns, creating a serene and picturesque backdrop for their camping experience. The campground is designed with "lots of space between sites," which is a highly valued feature for campers seeking privacy and a sense of seclusion in nature. This generous spacing allows for a more intimate and peaceful outdoor retreat, despite being relatively close to urban areas. The presence of these ancient trees contributes to a cooler, shadier environment, making it pleasant even during warmer seasons. However, it's worth noting that the campground is accessed by driving "through a busy park" (referring to Huddart Park itself), meaning that while the campground sites offer solitude, the approach might involve navigating more active recreational areas.
In terms of **services and features**, Toyon Campground provides essential amenities for a comfortable camping stay. A key convenience highlighted by visitors is the presence of "flushing toilets," which is often a welcome upgrade from more primitive pit toilets found in some campgrounds. This amenity significantly enhances the comfort level for campers. The campground is designed as a group site facility, meaning it caters primarily to larger parties rather than individual or small family bookings. This structure makes it ideal for organized outings, family reunions, or educational groups looking for a shared outdoor experience. One notable piece of information from past reviews indicates "No fire ring" at the sites. This is an important detail for campers who typically plan on having campfires for cooking or ambiance, and it suggests that alternative cooking methods would be necessary, or campfires are generally prohibited. Additionally, the availability of water at campsites and picnic areas has been noted as "brown" during certain times, and during summer, the stream is dry, with only a small area where water percolates from the ground. This suggests that campers should consider bringing their own potable water supplies for drinking and cooking.
A major **feature** and draw of Toyon Campground is its direct access to **Phleger Estates**. This adjacent area is described as a fantastic place to "hike around Redwoods and fern." Visitors can expect a "long but easy hike" through stunning natural landscapes, offering ample opportunities for exploration and enjoying the tranquility of the old-growth forest. It's important to note that "There is no structure to visit" within Phleger Estates; the appeal lies purely in its natural beauty and hiking trails. The area, however, can be "very busy with hikers," especially on weekends, indicating its popularity among local outdoor enthusiasts. This proximity to extensive hiking trails makes Toyon Campground an excellent base for those whose primary camping activity involves exploring the redwood forests on foot.
Regarding **promotional information and current status**, it is crucial for anyone searching "Camping Near Me" for Toyon Campground to be aware that it has been **"Currently closed due to Covid-19"** as per reviews from 2020 and 2022. A review from September 9, 2022, explicitly states, "Currently closed 9/9/22 and they are all group sites." While this information is several years old, it strongly suggests that potential visitors should verify the current operational status of the campground directly with San Mateo County Parks before making any plans. Mobile phones for general inquiries can be contacted through the main Huddart Park office, as specific numbers for Toyon Campground are not typically listed separately. Given its status as a group site facility, booking would likely be through the county park system's reservation portal, which would also indicate its availability. When operational, Toyon Campground would primarily promote itself as a serene group camping experience within the majestic redwood forest, offering privacy, flushing toilets, and immediate access to exceptional hiking in Phleger Estates. Prospective visitors should always check the latest information regarding opening dates, reservation procedures, and any specific rules or restrictions, such as fire regulations or water advisories, directly from official sources like the San Mateo County Parks website. The appeal of Toyon Campground remains its secluded atmosphere and prime location for redwood exploration, making it a desirable spot for group outings once it reopens.

Toyon Campground Reviews
Currently closed due to Covid-19. No fire ring. Has flushing toilets. Lots of space between sites. Have to drive through a busy park. From Toyon you can hike Phleger Estates. Phleger Estates is an area to hike around Redwoods and fern. There is no structure to visit. Long but easy hike. Water from campsites and picnic area is brown. During the summer, the stream is dry. There is a small area where the water percolate from the ground then disappear back into the ground. Very busy with hikers.
