Great campsite! You're close to town but it feels very remote.. Do be aware that when windy that wind comes ripping down the canyon and will blow your stuff away. There is plenty of room for parking and some nice grassy areas to put up a tent. The best part is the view at night! This is also on section 2 of the WABDR. - Jimmy Toungate

Durr Road Campsite Introduce

For those in the Ellensburg, Washington area or planning a visit and searching for "camping near me," Durr Road Campsite, located on Old Durr Rd, Ellensburg, WA 98926, USA, presents an intriguing option. Based on available user reviews, this campsite offers a unique blend of accessibility to town amenities while providing a sense of remoteness. It appears to cater primarily to individuals and small groups looking for a more informal camping experience, particularly tent camping, and those who appreciate natural beauty, especially nighttime views.

The environment of Durr Road Campsite is characterized by its proximity to Ellensburg, suggesting relatively easy access to supplies, restaurants, and other town conveniences. However, despite this nearness to civilization, the campsite reportedly "feels very remote." This implies a setting that offers a degree of seclusion and immersion in nature, potentially away from the noise and crowds often associated with more developed campgrounds. The mention of a "canyon" suggests a topographical feature that influences the local environment, particularly regarding wind conditions. Campers should be aware that the wind can come "ripping down the canyon" and may be strong enough to blow belongings away, necessitating careful securing of tents and gear. The presence of "nice grassy areas to put up a tent" indicates suitable spots for tent camping, likely offering a softer and more comfortable surface compared to rocky or uneven terrain. The campsite also boasts "plenty of room for parking," making it accessible for those arriving in their own vehicles, whether for a quick overnight stay or a longer camping trip.

In terms of services and features, Durr Road Campsite appears to be a more primitive or dispersed camping area rather than a developed campground with formal amenities. The reviews do not mention facilities such as restrooms, potable water sources, picnic tables, or fire pits. This suggests that campers should be fully self-sufficient, bringing their own water, cooking equipment, shelter, and waste disposal bags. The primary features highlighted are the natural setting, the availability of grassy areas for tents, ample parking, and the notable "view at night," which implies excellent stargazing opportunities due to the remote feel and potentially low light pollution. The mention of the campsite being on "section 2 of the WABDR" (Washington Backcountry Discovery Route) is a significant feature for adventure motorcyclists and overlanders following this scenic route, indicating its accessibility and suitability for those traveling the WABDR.

While the overall sentiment in the reviews is positive, with one reviewer calling it a "great campsite," there are a couple of points regarding the upkeep and other users to consider. One review mentions "a little bit of trash and broken glass but not too bad." This suggests that while the area is generally appreciated, there might be occasional issues with litter left by previous visitors. The same review also notes that it "would be nice if people picked up after themselves when they were shooting" and that the area is "a little bit tracked up from people driving around when it's muddy but not too bad overall." These comments indicate that the campsite might be used by individuals engaging in recreational shooting, and that vehicular traffic, especially when the ground is wet, can impact the terrain. Potential campers should be aware of these possibilities and exercise caution and respect for the environment and other users.

Given the information available, Durr Road Campsite offers a unique "camping near me" experience with the following key aspects:

  • Proximity to Town with a Remote Feel: Enjoy the convenience of being close to Ellensburg while experiencing a sense of seclusion.
  • Tent Camping Focus: Offers nice grassy areas suitable for setting up tents.
  • Ample Parking: Plenty of space to park vehicles.
  • Exceptional Night Views: Highly praised for its stargazing opportunities.
  • Access to WABDR: Located on section 2 of the Washington Backcountry Discovery Route, making it ideal for WABDR travelers.
  • Potential Wind Issues: Be prepared for strong winds coming down the canyon.
  • Limited Amenities: Likely a primitive campsite with no provided restrooms, water, or other facilities, requiring self-sufficiency.
  • Occasional Litter and Terrain Impact: Be aware of potential trash, broken glass, and muddy tracks from vehicles.
  • Possible Recreational Shooting: Other users might be engaged in shooting activities in the vicinity.

For local users searching for "camping near me" who are comfortable with a more rustic and self-supported camping style, Durr Road Campsite could be an attractive option. The combination of proximity to town and a remote feel is a significant advantage, offering both convenience and a connection with nature. The excellent nighttime views are a notable highlight for stargazers. However, it is crucial for potential campers to be prepared for the potential for strong winds and to bring all necessary supplies, including water and waste disposal bags. Awareness of the possibility of litter, tracked-up ground, and recreational shooting in the area is also important for a safe and enjoyable experience. As this appears to be an informal campsite without official management, there is likely no fee or reservation system, meaning it operates on a first-come, first-served basis.

There is no specific promotional information available for Durr Road Campsite. Its appeal lies in its natural attributes – the blend of accessibility and remoteness, the grassy tent areas, the ample parking, and the exceptional night sky views. For those seeking a more structured and amenity-rich "camping near me" experience, exploring developed campgrounds in the Ellensburg area might be more suitable. However, for those who value a more independent and nature-focused camping trip, Durr Road Campsite offers a unique opportunity to enjoy the outdoors close to town while feeling miles away.

In conclusion, Durr Road Campsite near Ellensburg, WA, provides a distinctive camping experience characterized by its convenient location yet remote ambiance. It is particularly well-suited for tent campers and those traveling the WABDR. While the lack of formal amenities requires self-sufficiency and awareness of potential wind and environmental conditions, the promise of great night views and a secluded feel close to town makes it a noteworthy option for those seeking a more informal "camping near me" adventure.
