Big Pines Recreation Site Reviews
A different kind of pretty. Really well kept by staff and friendly Rangers. Loved watching the drift boats on the Yakima River and the occasional train on the other bank. We've added it as a new favorite in this area.Note: be prepared for the very occasional train, sometimes noisy generators operated for many daytime hours by inconsiderate campers, and racing motorcycles/cars down the highway - especially on sunny weekends. As for the generator thing, the very nice Ranger allowed us to move to the other end of the recreation area when another camper parked very close (in an essentially empty campground) and immediately fired up a cheap (and oversized for the trailer) generator. The road and train noise lasts a few moments - the generator droned for hours (starting around noon on a sunny, not hot day) until we moved. Thank you, Ranger!
Apr 14, 2025 · Not all who wander are lost.Had another great trip fishing and camping, overall we love the big trailers spots, big pines and watching the train go by. We do wish there was a camp host there this time of year to keep people quiet after 10pm and keep the bathrooms maintained. They got pretty trashed this year as there were a bunch of tent campers.
Apr 07, 2025 · Jessi SaundersI've been here a couple times now and it's a pretty nice spot. Finding a flat place for a tent when only the first section of the campground is open is a little difficult but I look forward to being able to check out the actual tent sites. My only complaint is the trains at night are loud as heck, but otherwise it's pretty nice. Feels safer than any of the other campgrounds on this strip of the river. For a solo female traveler this was the only one I felt comfortable staying at. It's big enough that there's always more people but you can be spread out from them if it's not busy. And the campsites are back from the parking lot so people aren't just driving through. Not a ton of trees around but for desert camping you can't complain too much!
Feb 15, 2022 · Ash NogalesIf you want to float the Yakima river this is a great place to camp. They have a boat launch. We drove about 6 miles with our inner tubes at another site and floated our way to big pines. Such a great experience that we’re planning to make this an annual thing! (parking passes from camp ground work at other parks)
Jul 17, 2024 · Ashley DecatoOk campsite, flat, good access. However, pit toilets were smelly, several trains passed at night and very early morning(railroad tracks are at the other side of the river) and they made a lot of noise. Also watch out for the wind - there are no wind-breaks and very few trees and bushes - we were able to set up our tent only during the evening when winds settled down. Also no shade during the day.
