Tram Road Equestrian Campground

2201 Rima Ridge Rd, Ormond Beach, FL 32174, USA

4.0
This is more about Google Maps insanely errant directions because I can't figure out how to contact them. They pointed me to LPGA Blvd. west off of I95 to a Catholic School parking lot. No! Go 1 exit further south to 92 west off I95 to Indian Lake Road, a few miles. Turn right on Indian Lake Road and it will take you into the Tiger Bay State Forest. Take your first right after entering the gate and then the next right after crossing a small one lane bridge onto Rima Ridge Rd. This will take you to the Tram Road Equestrian Campground and also the closer (and larger) Bennett Field Family Campground. I hope this saves someone from driving in circles for an hour trying to follow Google Maps directions like I did. Upon re-route they tried to send me into Fire Tower Road which is now the entrance to a construction site. Sheeesh! - Bruce Turner

Tram Road Equestrian Campground Introduce

For local users seeking a distinctive "camping near me" experience, particularly those who travel with horses, the Tram Road Equestrian Campground located at 2201 Rima Ridge Rd in Ormond Beach, Florida, offers a unique opportunity. Situated within the expansive Tiger Bay State Forest, this campground caters specifically to equestrians looking to combine camping with trail riding. While some details regarding amenities and specific features require direct inquiry, the available information and user reviews provide valuable insights into what potential visitors can expect.

Immersive Natural Environment within Tiger Bay State Forest:

The Tram Road Equestrian Campground is nestled within the Tiger Bay State Forest, a significant natural area in Volusia County known for its diverse ecosystems, including pine flatwoods, cypress swamps, and oak hammocks. This location promises a camping experience deeply integrated with nature. Campers can anticipate a setting characterized by natural woodlands, offering shade and a sense of seclusion. The forest environment provides opportunities for observing local wildlife and enjoying the tranquility of the Florida wilderness. Being located within a state forest also suggests the potential for well-maintained trails suitable for horseback riding and hiking.

The first user review highlights the importance of accurate directions, noting that Google Maps may provide errant routes. The correct directions involve taking exit 92 (Indian Lake Road) west off I-95, driving a few miles, turning right onto Indian Lake Road into Tiger Bay State Forest, taking the first right after the gate, and then the next right after a small bridge onto Rima Ridge Rd. This detailed guidance is crucial for first-time visitors to navigate to the campground successfully and also indicates that the campground is somewhat remote, further enhancing the sense of natural immersion.

Equestrian-Focused Features and Services:

The primary feature of the Tram Road Equestrian Campground is its provision for camping with horses. The second user review mentions that the campground has four campsites, each equipped with one small corral. This is a significant feature for equestrians, allowing them to keep their horses safely contained while camping. However, the reviewer points out a potential limitation: the single small corral per site may be inconvenient for those traveling with two horses that need to be kept separate but within sight of each other. This is a crucial consideration for potential visitors with multiple horses.

The review also notes the presence of a "huge day use area with spots with 2 corrals," which are reportedly not used by day visitors. This suggests that while the individual campsites may have limited horse accommodation, there are facilities nearby that could potentially be better suited for groups with multiple horses, although the rangers apparently prohibit camping in these day-use sites. This discrepancy is something that potential campers with more than one horse should discuss directly with the campground management.

Beyond the corrals, being an equestrian campground within a state forest implies the availability of horse trails. The reviewer mentions that "the trails were really nice," indicating a positive aspect for those wishing to ride within the Tiger Bay State Forest. The extent and nature of these trails (length, difficulty, scenery) would be valuable information for prospective visitors to obtain by contacting the campground.

General Camping Amenities and Potential Services:

While the focus is on equestrian camping, the Tram Road Equestrian Campground likely offers basic amenities expected at a campground within a state forest. These may include:

  • Campsites: Designated areas for camping, potentially accommodating tents and smaller RVs (the second review mentions managing to get a "big unit" in, despite the website saying no big units, suggesting some RV access, though with potential challenges).
  • Water Access: Availability of potable water for campers and potentially water for horses (this needs to be confirmed).
  • Restroom Facilities: Basic restrooms, which may range from pit toilets to more developed facilities. The condition and availability should be verified.
  • Fire Pits or Grills: Designated areas for campfires and outdoor cooking. Regulations regarding campfires within the state forest should also be noted.
  • Picnic Tables: Likely provided at individual campsites.
  • Parking: Areas for parking vehicles and horse trailers.

The second review mentions a very low cost of "less than $10 a day," which, if accurate and current, would be a significant draw. However, it is essential to confirm the current pricing and any associated fees when contacting the campground.

Considerations for Daytona Bike Week:

The second reviewer mentions staying at Tram Road Equestrian Campground while visiting Daytona for Bike Week, noting its proximity. This suggests that the campground can serve as an alternative accommodation option for those attending the event who prefer a more rural setting or who are traveling with horses. The distance to Daytona Beach and the ease of access during Bike Week traffic would be important factors for those considering this option for that specific event.

Summary for Local Equestrian Campers:
