Date of Visit: July 4th weekendWeather: 99-110 FThe weather is nice and cool at night. No problem sleeping. The weather in the morning is super nice. It’s nice to stay at the campground until noon. Between 3pm until sunset, it gets extremely hot!Campsite:Campsite 136 in my opinion has the best and the only campsite with a window of lake view. We were able to watch the July 4th fireworks!Campsite 136, 138, and 140 are close to each other. The campsites in front of these campsites have running faucets. Campsite 138 has a view as well but bunch of trees blocking the view. However, there is a flatter surface area to set up a tent. Campsite 136 is a little bit sloped but there’s a little bit of flat area to set up tent as well. And there are shades from the trees. It’s nice to wake up facing the lake when walking out of our tent.Parking:The parking area can fit two cars. It’s possible to car camp using an SUV tent but we didn’t do it because it was sloped. I would not recommend it.Restroom/Shower:The restrooms and showers are clean but I still suggest to alcohol wipe the surface. The shower tokens need to be exchanged close to the visitor center, not at visitor center. The machine where you get the token only takes cash, not coins, and it does not give change. The shower water pressure was strong and I only needed 2-3 tokens. The restroom gets hot so bring a portable fan.Staff/Ranger:The staffs and rangers were nice and the rangers do their rounds. - Kristina

Upper Bayview Campground Introduce

Welcome to Upper Bayview Campground, a charming and inviting destination nestled in Kelseyville, California. As part of the wider Clear Lake State Park, Upper Bayview offers a unique opportunity to connect with nature, enjoy stunning lake views, and partake in a variety of outdoor activities. For those searching on "Camping Near Me," Upper Bayview Campground presents a compelling option, combining serene natural surroundings with essential amenities.

Environment and Setting

Upper Bayview Campground is situated on higher ground within Clear Lake State Park, offering partially shaded sites and picturesque views of Clear Lake and Dorn Cove. The campground is woven on top of a hill, providing a distinct vantage point for campers. The natural landscape is characterized by trees that offer beneficial shade, particularly during the warmer parts of the day. Campers have noted that mornings are especially pleasant, making it enjoyable to linger at the campsite until noon. While summer temperatures can soar between 99-110°F during the afternoon until sunset, the nights cool down nicely, ensuring comfortable sleeping conditions. The location provides a tranquil atmosphere, especially for sites on the outskirts of the campgrounds, which offer a sense of privacy. Wildlife sightings, such as deer, are common, adding to the natural charm of the area.

The campground’s proximity to Clear Lake, California's largest freshwater lake, means easy access to a range of water-based recreation. The park is known for its excellent bass fishing, and boating, swimming, and water-skiing are popular activities. The park is also a nesting place for waterfowl, making it ideal for birdwatching enthusiasts. Access to the Dorn Nature Trail is available directly from Upper Bayview, offering opportunities for enjoyable and easy local hikes. While the campground provides a secluded feel, it remains easily accessible to everything the Clear Lake area has to offer.

Services and Amenities

Upper Bayview Campground is equipped with a range of services and amenities designed to enhance your camping experience. Each campsite typically includes a picnic table and a fire ring, allowing for enjoyable outdoor meals and campfires. While some sites may have a slight slope, efforts have been made to provide flat areas suitable for tent setup. Parking areas are generally spacious enough to accommodate two cars, though car camping with an SUV tent on sloped sites might not be ideal.

Restrooms and showers are available, and while generally clean, it's always a good practice to wipe down surfaces. Shower tokens are required and can be exchanged near the visitor center (not at the visitor center itself). It's important to note that the token machine accepts cash only and does not provide change, so come prepared with exact currency. Campers have found the shower water pressure to be strong, with typically 2-3 tokens being sufficient for a shower. Portable fans are recommended for the restrooms as they can get warm. Potable water spigots are conveniently dispersed throughout the campgrounds.

For those seeking more structured facilities, Clear Lake State Park offers additional amenities across its campgrounds, including accessible restrooms and showers at other locations like Kelsey Creek Campground and Cole Creek Campground. While specific electrical or water hookups are not available directly at Upper Bayview campsites, the wider Clear Lake State Park facilities, including a dump station, are accessible. WiFi is not available directly at the campsites, but free WiFi is typically accessible at the Visitor Center.

The campground is pet-friendly, though it's advised to check for any specific restrictions or fees. Quiet hours are enforced from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m., with music and conversation expected to be confined to individual campsites. Generators may only be operated between 10 a.m. and 8 p.m. These regulations ensure a peaceful environment for all campers. Campfires are permitted only in designated fire rings, and it's always crucial to check for current fire restrictions, especially during dry periods.

Features and Highlights

One of the standout features of Upper Bayview Campground is the potential for breathtaking lake views. Campsite 136 is particularly praised for having the best, and arguably the only, direct lake view, offering a prime spot for watching events like Fourth of July fireworks over the lake. While other sites, such as 138, may have views, trees can sometimes obstruct them. However, site 138 offers a flatter surface area for tent setup. Site 136 also benefits from natural tree shade, and waking up to the lake view from your tent is a highly enjoyable experience. Sites like 121 are appreciated for their privacy, being located on the outskirts of the campground, and providing opportunities for wildlife spotting.

Upper Bayview Campground offers 33 sites, partially shaded, and provides access to the Dorn Nature Trail. The campground is a mix of tent and RV spots, though visitors should be mindful of the maximum trailer/RV length of 35 feet for all sites within Clear Lake State Park. It's important to remember there are no electric/water hookups at these sites. The varying terrain of some sites, as noted by campers, means it’s wise to assess your specific needs for tent or vehicle setup upon arrival or when choosing a site.
