Upper Blue Lake Dam Site Expansion Campground

Markleeville, CA 96120, USA

Past the lower blue lake CG the paved road ends. Some sections are narrow and lots pot holes . The bear box are decent size please use them. We had an incident where someone left trash out and their cooler and a bear came into camp. There are trash at the site, potable water, and the host are really good about maintaining the bathrooms. Some of the sites have space for only 1 tent however all the car parking are long enough for 2 cars and If needed can put a tent there as well. - Maya Hawj

Upper Blue Lake Dam Site Expansion Campground Introduce

For those venturing into the serene and stunning High Sierra in search of "Camping Near Me," the Upper Blue Lake Dam Site Expansion Campground offers a truly remote and picturesque escape. Located at the very end of the road in Markleeville, CA 96120, this campground provides a unique opportunity to immerse oneself in the unparalleled beauty of Upper Blue Lake and the surrounding wilderness. You can reach them at (916) 386-5164 or +1 916-386-5164 for inquiries, though it's important to note that cell service can be spotty in such remote areas.

The environment at Upper Blue Lake Dam Site Expansion Campground is one of its most defining features. Situated at a high elevation, it offers breathtaking views of Upper Blue Lake, nestled amidst towering granite peaks and lush alpine forests. As a reviewer eloquently states, "This is such a beautiful spot!" Being "at the end of the road past all of the other blue lakes campgrounds" signifies its secluded nature, promising a more peaceful and less trafficked experience compared to other sites closer to the entrance. However, this seclusion also comes with a caveat regarding accessibility: "Past the lower blue lake CG the paved road ends. Some sections are narrow and lots pot holes." This means prospective campers should be prepared for a somewhat challenging drive, especially if towing, and should "do your research" on current road conditions. Despite the road, the reward is an undeniably stunning natural setting, characterized by clear mountain air, the shimmering lake, and abundant opportunities to connect with nature. The presence of bears is also a significant environmental factor, emphasizing the wild nature of the area and the necessity of proper food storage.

Upper Blue Lake Dam Site Expansion Campground provides essential services and amenities, catering to a traditional camping experience rather than a resort-style stay. It is designed to offer comfort while maintaining the integrity of the wilderness environment:

  • Campsites: The campground features 32 individual sites, offering flexibility for campers. Notably, "9 of which are first come first serve," which is a significant advantage for those who prefer spontaneity or can't secure a reservation. The sites generally offer space for tents and RVs, although some individual sites might accommodate only one tent. However, car parking spaces are typically long enough to accommodate two cars, and a tent can even be set up there if needed, providing flexibility. Each site comes equipped with fundamental amenities: a fire pit for campfires, a picnic table for outdoor dining, and a bear box for safe food storage.

  • Restroom Facilities: "Vault toilets that were very clean" are available throughout the campground. The consistent maintenance by the hosts is a highly appreciated service, ensuring a relatively comfortable experience despite the rustic nature of these facilities. There are no showers, reinforcing the "back to nature" ethos of the campground.

  • Water Access: "Water spigots around" provide potable water, which is a crucial convenience for cooking, drinking, and basic hygiene. This eliminates the need for campers to bring all their water supplies.

  • Bear Safety Measures: "The bear box are decent size please use them." This emphasizes the critical importance of utilizing the provided bear boxes for all food and scented items to prevent unwanted wildlife encounters, as highlighted by a "incident where someone left trash out and their cooler and a bear came into camp." Trash receptacles are also provided at the site, further assisting with waste management and preventing bear issues.

  • Camp Hosts: Reviewers laud the "host are really good about maintaining the bathrooms," indicating a dedicated and helpful on-site presence. Camp hosts often provide valuable local information, assistance, and ensure the campground rules are followed for everyone's safety and enjoyment.

  • Pet-Friendly: The campground is pet-friendly, with pets welcome for an additional fee of "$2 a night," allowing campers to bring their furry companions to enjoy the outdoors with them.

The features of Upper Blue Lake Dam Site Expansion Campground revolve around its stunning natural setting and the array of outdoor activities it facilitates. Its location directly at the dam site on Upper Blue Lake provides immediate access to the lake for various water-based pursuits. While fishing can be "fickle" and some "people have luck but we didn't," the lake is generally known for its trout fishing potential. Beyond fishing, the calm waters are ideal for non-motorized boating activities such as kayaking, canoeing, and paddleboarding, allowing visitors to explore the lake's coves and enjoy the serene reflections of the surrounding mountains.

For terrestrial adventures, the campground offers direct access to "hiking, and off road trails." The High Sierra landscape provides countless opportunities for exploring, from leisurely strolls along the lake shore to more challenging treks into the adjacent wilderness areas. The presence of "off road trails" is a significant draw for those with ATVs, dirt bikes, or Jeeps, offering a different dimension of outdoor recreation. The peaceful atmosphere, especially "during the week when it is not too busy," allows for deep relaxation and a true disconnection from the stresses of daily life. Even on weekends, when it "can get quite full," the sheer beauty of the location remains paramount.

For those searching "Camping Near Me" and prioritizing a remote, beautiful, and relatively rustic experience in the High Sierra, Upper Blue Lake Dam Site Expansion Campground offers compelling promotional points. The very fact that it is "at the end of the road" appeals to adventurers seeking true seclusion and a break from crowds. The price point of "$23 a night with no hookups" offers an affordable gateway to a premium natural setting. The consistent praise for clean facilities and helpful hosts enhances its appeal, assuring potential campers of a well-managed environment despite its primitive nature. The explicit mention of abundant bear activity serves as a strong reminder for responsible camping practices, which is a hallmark of true wilderness camping. The direct access to the lake, coupled with hiking and off-road opportunities, makes it a versatile destination for a range of outdoor enthusiasts. Overall, this campground is highly recommended for those who appreciate raw natural beauty, the quiet solitude of the mountains, and are prepared for a true High Sierra camping adventure, complete with proper bear awareness and a willingness to embrace the elements.
