For those seeking an authentic High Sierra camping experience, Caples Lake Campground, nestled in the scenic Kirkwood, CA 95646 area, presents an ideal choice. Situated within the majestic Eldorado National Forest at an elevation of approximately 7,850 feet, this campground offers a rustic yet recently improved setting for tents, trailers, and RVs, making it a prominent option for anyone Browse "Camping Near Me." The campground's phone number is (530) 622-5061 or +1 530-622-5061.
Caples Lake Campground is truly a gem for nature lovers, offering an immersive experience in the High Sierra environment. It is located directly across Highway 88 from the picturesque Caples Lake, a stunning reservoir known for its clear, cold waters and surrounding granite outcroppings and pine forests. While the campground is situated right on the highway, customer reviews indicate that campsites located further back within the grounds are remarkably quiet, providing a peaceful retreat from any potential road noise.
The elevation of approximately 7,850 feet means cooler temperatures, especially at night, even during the summer months, providing a welcome escape from the heat of lower elevations. The landscape is characterized by towering trees, large boulders, and a generally rugged, natural feel. This high-altitude setting also contributes to a refreshing lack of typical valley insects like relentless mosquitoes, as noted by some visitors who found bug repellent effective when they did encounter them. The beauty of the area is not just seasonal; in winter, when snow-covered, it transforms into a majestic sight, and in summer, it remains equally spectacular. The natural surroundings lend themselves to a sense of tranquility and a deep connection with the outdoors.
Caples Lake Campground, though offering a rustic camping experience, has seen recent renovations that have significantly improved its facilities. It features 34 campsites, all operating on a first-come, first-served basis, meaning no reservations are taken. This encourages spontaneity and offers a classic camping approach for those eager to secure a spot.
Key services and amenities at Caples Lake Campground include:
Campsite Features: All campsites are leveled and improved, featuring picnic tables, fire rings, and grills. This ensures a comfortable setup for cooking and enjoying outdoor meals. Some sites are better suited for trailers and RVs (up to 40 feet), while others, including a few with a short walk from the parking area to the camping area (sites 6, 7, 8, and 17), are ideal for tents. The camp roads and parking spurs are paved, contributing to easier access and a cleaner environment. There are also specific walk-in tent sites available (e.g., sites 1, 3, 6-8, 16-18, 24, 26, and double site 22).
Water Facilities: The campground typically provides piped water. However, it is important to note, as highlighted by recent customer reviews, that running water may occasionally be unavailable, so it is advisable for visitors to bring their own potable water as a backup. Despite this, the campground generally strives to provide this essential amenity, with its water system tested monthly during the use season. RV filling from piped water sources in campgrounds and day use areas is NOT permitted.
Restrooms: The toilets are vault toilets, described by users as "rustic" but clean, akin to a "nice outhouse." While they might need some paint, they serve their purpose for a true camping experience.
Camp Hosts: The campground benefits from dedicated camp hosts, such as Martha and Dave, who are consistently praised by visitors for being "great!" They are a valuable resource for information and assistance, and firewood is available for purchase from them, adding to the convenience for campers.
Pet-Friendly: Caples Lake Campground welcomes pets, but it is important to keep dogs on a leash at all times and clean up after them, as is standard in national forest campgrounds.
Bear Awareness: As bears are known to be in the area, visitors are strongly advised to keep all foods, soaps, and garbage properly stored in bear-resistant containers or vehicles to ensure safety and prevent wildlife encounters. Bear boxes are provided at sites.
Trash Collection: Garbage disposal services are available, contributing to the cleanliness and maintenance of the campground.
Maximum Stay Limit: There is a 14-day maximum stay limit per district per year.
The primary feature of Caples Lake Campground is its unparalleled proximity to Caples Lake and a myriad of outdoor recreational opportunities. Its location off Highway 88, also known as the Carson Pass Highway, provides excellent access to the high country of the Sierra Nevada.
Notable features include:
Direct Lake Access: Campsites are within easy walking distance to Caples Lake. The lake itself is a hub for various activities including swimming, fishing, boating (with a 5 MPH speed limit), canoeing, kayaking, and paddleboarding. A public boat ramp is less than a mile away, and Caples Lake Resort, just across the highway, offers boat rentals and a bait shop.
Hiking Opportunities: The area is a hiker's paradise. Trails such as the Caples Lake to Emigrant Lake Trail offer scenic treks with views of Caples Lake and Emigrant Creek, leading to the beautiful Emigrant Lake. This 4-mile hike is a good beginner's option with a rewarding alpine lake at the end. Other notable nearby trails include those accessible from Woods Lake Campground (3.5 miles away) and Kirkwood Lake Campground, both offering further exploration and access to the Mokelumne Wilderness (permit required for overnight use year-round).
Fishing Mecca: Caples Lake is renowned for its excellent fishing, home to Mackinaw, brown, brook, and rainbow trout. Anglers can fish from the dam, spillway, or creek inlets, and both shore and boat fishing are popular.
Seasonal Availability: The campground is generally open from early June to mid-October, with exact dates subject to snowmelt and weather conditions, showcasing the region's distinct four seasons. Check-in time is 2:00 PM, and check-out time is 1:00 PM.
Caples Lake Campground serves as an exceptional base for exploring the stunning Kirkwood area and beyond, a perfect offering under the "Camping Near Me" category. Its location provides both serene camping and convenient access to a range of attractions and activities:
Close to Kirkwood Ski Resort: Just a few miles from the campground, Kirkwood Ski Resort offers not only world-class skiing in winter but also a general store, restaurant, post office, room rentals, and a summer recreation program. This proximity means visitors can enjoy a diverse range of activities depending on the season.
Day Trips to Lake Tahoe: For those looking to expand their explorations, South Lake Tahoe is approximately a 45-minute drive away, providing access to more amenities, dining, and tourist attractions.
Ideal for Groups: As highlighted by a returning customer, the campground is a fantastic spot for groups of friends and family to gather for a week of camping, fostering a sense of community amidst nature. Single units are limited to a maximum of 2 vehicles and 6 people, while double units allow 4 vehicles and 12 people (additional fees apply for extra vehicles).
Perfect for Tents and RVs: Whether you prefer the classic tent camping experience or the convenience of an RV or trailer, Caples Lake Campground accommodates various camping styles, with recent improvements making it more accessible and comfortable.
Unplug and Reconnect: With its rustic amenities and focus on outdoor activities, Caples Lake Campground encourages visitors to disconnect from daily distractions and reconnect with nature. While cell service may be fair to poor in some areas, it enhances the sense of being truly away from it all.
Customer reviews consistently praise the campground for its beautiful sites, friendly hosts, and excellent proximity to the lake and other attractions. Despite the occasional lack of running water, guests appreciate the overall experience and the effort put into recent renovations. The sentiment of "we're camping, right?" encapsulates the adventurous and adaptable spirit of those who choose Caples Lake Campground for their outdoor escape. It offers a genuine high-altitude camping experience that promises memorable moments amidst California's stunning Sierra Nevada mountains.

Caples Lake Campground Reviews
We come up from southern California the same week every year. We meet up with a group of good friends and family for a week of camping. Campground is right on the highway, but the campsites in the back are very quiet. Camp hosts, Martha & Dave are great! Firewood is available for purchase. Campsites were leveled and improved a few years ago. Campsites are easy walking distance to Caples Lake. Lake has boat rental and bait shop. Just a few miles to Kirkwood Ski Resort and their general store. 45 minute drive to South Lake Tahoe. No running water while we were there, but we knew ahead of time and brought our own. Toilets are rustic (kinda like a nice outhouse) and need some paint, but, hey, we're camping, right? Some sites can handle trailers, but we stay in tents. It trained a few days this year, but it was light and there's no mud. We'll be back next year.
Aug 15, 2022 · Carl K.Excellent sites recently renovated. Great proximity to several beautiful lakes. No potable water.
Aug 13, 2023 · Timothy ConwayThe most beautiful lake on the 88 corridor. Unpredictable weather is another charm of this high Sierra lake. Some of the best hiking is on the east end of the lake. From this vantage point it is common to still view snow in certain areas of the mountain even in July.
Jul 11, 2022 · Steve WellsNewly remodeled campgrounds, very clean! Highly recommended! We chose spot #6 a bit of walk to top of campsite, but worth it!!! Posted pic of our view from campsite. Open, clean and very private! Only thing with this spot, have an Ez up! Shade over picnic table in the morning, but afternoons hot in summer!!! Bonus lake is walking distance just across the street! Great place for the kiddos to run around and adventure too!
Jul 10, 2021 · Desiree DurnerCamped here with my 4 grandkids in early August. Pros: large, clean sites, easy walk to the lake, fire pits, picnic tables, clean restrooms and water available. Cons: never saw the hosts, we stayed 3 nights. 2nd. night the campers across from us had an all night party, kept us awake until after 3am. The garbage situation needs work, there are no bear boxes. There are dumpsters, but they are locked, only a metal can with an easily removable lid is available. Of course a bear got into the can in the middle of the night and then took a walk around our site, sniffing at the bottom of our tents and looking inside the car. A bit frightening for the kids....and me too! I think that you are supposed to empty your garbage into the can before a certain time so the camp employees can empty it into the dumpster, but there is no communication with campers. Would love to go back, but the garbage situation needs to be changed.
