Van Pugh South Campground Introduce
For local residents in the Flowery Branch, Georgia area searching within the 'camping near me' category, Van Pugh South Campground, located at 6749 Gaines Ferry Rd, presents a location with a history of providing waterside recreational opportunities. Based on older reviews, it appears to have been a pleasant destination for camping and enjoying the amenities of Lake Lanier. However, recent feedback indicates a significant change in the status and condition of the park, which potential visitors should be aware of.
According to a past positive review, Van Pugh South Campground offered a wonderful experience for groups and families. The reviewer mentioned renting a boat and having a great time with a leadership team at the campsite. Activities enjoyed included grilling meat, and the location was described as pleasant, featuring a shallow area suitable for children to swim. The overall impression was of a comfortable and enjoyable setting, suggesting that the campground once provided a desirable environment for lakeside recreation and relaxation.
The environment of Van Pugh South Campground, based on this positive account, was characterized by its proximity to Lake Lanier, offering opportunities for boating and swimming. The presence of a shallow water area indicates a family-friendly environment where children could safely enjoy the lake. The pleasant surroundings likely included natural beauty associated with Lake Lanier, making it an attractive spot for those seeking a waterside camping experience within the 'camping near me' options.
However, a more recent review paints a starkly different picture. This feedback states that "This park has been closed and neglected for 4 years." The reviewer further notes the presence of a "No Entry" sign and indicates that two families have been residing on the property for the past six months, with no other public access. This suggests a significant period of disuse and a current lack of availability for public camping or recreation. The reviewer expresses disappointment at the apparent waste of "beautiful resources," having frequented the area for waterside walks since 1993, and attributes the situation to the US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), which often manages such recreational areas around major lakes.
Given this critical recent information, it is crucial for local users searching for 'camping near me' to be aware of the reported closure and neglect of Van Pugh South Campground. The positive experiences from the past may no longer be indicative of the current state of the facility. The presence of a "No Entry" sign strongly suggests that the area is not currently open to the public for camping or day use.
The services and features that Van Pugh South Campground may have once offered, such as boat rentals (mentioned by a past reviewer), grilling areas, and access to swimming areas, are likely unavailable if the park has indeed been closed and neglected for an extended period. The amenities typically associated with a USACE campground, such as maintained campsites, restrooms, and possibly boat launching facilities, would also likely be non-operational under such circumstances.
There is no promotional information available, and given the reported closure, it would be inaccurate to promote Van Pugh South Campground as a currently viable option for camping or recreation. The recent review serves as a strong cautionary note for anyone considering a visit.
To obtain the most up-to-date and accurate information regarding the status of Van Pugh South Campground, local users should contact the US Army Corps of Engineers or the Lake Lanier Project Management Office directly. They may be able to provide details on whether the park is officially closed, if there are any plans for reopening or maintenance, and what the current conditions are. The phone number provided, (770) 967-6315 or +1 770-967-6315, may or may not connect to an active information source regarding the park's current status; it's possible this number is no longer monitored if the park is closed.
In conclusion, based on the available information, Van Pugh South Campground:
- Was previously a pleasant waterside location on Lake Lanier, suitable for boating, swimming, and grilling.
- Offered a comfortable and enjoyable environment for families and groups.
- Has reportedly been closed and neglected for approximately four years, according to a recent review.
- Currently has a "No Entry" sign, indicating it is not open to the public.

We rented a boat and had a wonderful time with the leadership team at the campsite. We enjoyed grilling meat, and the place was so pleasant with a shallow area where the kids could swim. It was an incredibly comfortable and enjoyable location!
Jul 21, 2024 · MOOHANMASTER JKThis park has been closed and neglected for 4 years. Now there's a sign that says No Entry. There are two families living on the property that have been here for 6 months. No one else. What a waste a beautiful resources.. I've been coming here to walk by the water since 1993. Great job USACE
May 08, 2024 · Heather ArnetteGreat spot for a long weekend getaway. Camp host were phenomenal and very accommodating. We fished all weekend and were able to leave the boats in the water and pull them up right in front of camp. The islands in front of the campground do attract a lot of boats pulling up on the beaches and shallow sand bars hanging out for the day, but was not too bad the weekend we were there. Be sure to read all of the restrictions, the host do a good job of monitoring that as well.
May 03, 2021 · chris mcclanahanCampground is very nice and well run, bathrooms are decent. We had site 46 which has nice waterfront view and is good for swimming. Campsite pad are very small and close to each other.Great access to water for any water sport. We will definitely be back.
Jun 18, 2018 · Nick ThompsonVan Pugh South is a U.S Corps of Engineers campground that is open to the public. For the most part of the sites are tiny and seem to accommodate one small tent or RV but site 52 is the largest and has a water hookup across the street from it but it is a nonelectric site and they do ask that you do not flush the tanks of your RV with the water hookup at the dumpster area. They offer access to a range of activities with every site waterfront so fishing is as easy as 123. No catch and release restrictions. If you're planning on going out on the water, they even have a boat ramp access. All in all we give it a 4 for beauty but the sites could be a little bigger.
