White Cloud Campground Introduce
White Cloud Campground, nestled along CA-20 in the scenic Tahoe National Forest near Nevada City, CA 95959, offers a practical and accessible option for those seeking "Camping Near Me" in the Northern California region. While it provides a basic, functional camping experience, its convenient location and well-maintained facilities make it a suitable choice for travelers, particularly for short stays or as a base for exploring the surrounding natural attractions.
You can reach the Tahoe National Forest for information regarding White Cloud Campground at (530) 288-3231 or +1 530-288-3231. The campground typically operates seasonally, generally from May to October, though specific opening and closing dates are dependent on weather and snow conditions. It's advisable to check current operating dates and any fire restrictions before planning your trip, as campfires may not be allowed at certain times due to fire danger, as noted in a customer review.
White Cloud Campground is situated amidst a lush forested environment within the Tahoe National Forest. Reviewers highlight "lots of tree coverage," which provides ample shade and a natural ambiance for the campsites. This natural setting offers a refreshing escape, typical of forest campgrounds in the Sierra Nevada foothills. The campground's elevation is approximately 2,800 feet, providing a relatively mild climate during the camping season.
A significant aspect of White Cloud Campground's environment is its direct proximity to Highway 20. While this offers exceptional convenience for travelers, it also means that campers "can hear road noise from Hwy 20" and experience "trucks going up and down the hill." One reviewer described it as the "loudest campground I've ever stayed at" and reported "got no sleep" due to the noise, including "helicopters flying over head" during the day. This indicates that while the natural setting is present, the campground is not a remote, silent retreat. Instead, it functions more as a convenient stopover, as suggested by the comment "Seems like a good place to stop if you are traveling though."
White Cloud Campground offers a straightforward set of services and features, focusing on providing essential amenities for campers:
- P Campsites: The campground typically features around 20 individual campsites. Reviewers note that the "campsites are good size," providing adequate space for tents and small to medium-sized RVs or trailers. Each campsite generally includes a picnic table and a fire ring with a grill, allowing for outdoor cooking and gatherings when fire restrictions permit. There are no hookups (electrical, water, sewer) at individual sites, reflecting its status as a more rustic Forest Service campground.
- P Restrooms: A positive aspect consistently highlighted in reviews is that "both Campsites & bathrooms were clean." The restrooms are typically vault toilets (pit toilets), and their cleanliness is a significant advantage for campers.
- P Water: Potable (drinking) water is generally available at White Cloud Campground, usually from hand pumps or spigots located within the campground loops. This is an important amenity, eliminating the need for campers to bring their entire water supply.
- P Affordable Pricing: At approximately "$24 a night," White Cloud Campground offers a very reasonable cost for camping. Furthermore, it provides a "1/2 off with senior pass" discount, making it an even more economical option for eligible visitors.
- P Pet Policy: While not explicitly detailed in the provided reviews, Forest Service campgrounds generally allow pets on leash, provided they are well-behaved and cleaned up after. Campers should verify specific pet policies with the Tahoe National Forest.
For those searching "Camping Near Me" who prioritize affordability, cleanliness of basic facilities, and ease of access, White Cloud Campground fits the bill. The lack of hookups means it's best suited for self-contained RVs or tent campers who are comfortable with a more traditional, rustic camping experience.
While White Cloud Campground itself is primarily a base for convenient overnight stays, its location in the Tahoe National Forest and along Highway 20 provides access to a variety of recreational activities and nearby attractions:
- P Hiking and Biking: The Tahoe National Forest offers numerous trails for hiking and mountain biking. The nearby South Yuba River recreation areas (such as Malakoff Diggins State Historic Park or the Yuba River State Park) feature extensive trail networks.
- P River Access: The South Yuba River, known for its swimming holes, gold panning, and scenic beauty, is accessible from areas along Highway 20.
- P Fishing: Fishing opportunities can be found in the South Yuba River and various creeks and reservoirs within the national forest.
- P Historic Nevada City: The charming and historic town of Nevada City is a short drive away, offering unique shops, restaurants, art galleries, and a glimpse into California's Gold Rush history.
- P Scenic Drives: Highway 20 itself offers scenic drives through the Sierra Nevada foothills, connecting to other recreational areas.
- P Wildlife Viewing: The forested environment allows for opportunities to observe local wildlife and enjoy birdwatching.
Given the proximity to the highway, the primary recreational value of White Cloud Campground lies in its convenience as a launching point for exploring the broader Nevada City and Tahoe National Forest areas, rather than offering extensive activities directly within the campground.
White Cloud Campground's promotional appeal centers on its practicality and affordability. It's an excellent choice for a "good place to stop if you are traveling though," implying its suitability for road trips or as a temporary base. The positive comments about "clean campsites & bathrooms" and the "good size" of the sites contribute to a comfortable stay, even without extensive amenities. The senior pass discount further enhances its value for a particular demographic.
The lifestyle at White Cloud Campground is one of convenience and straightforward outdoor enjoyment. It's ideal for campers who don't mind ambient road noise and prefer a no-frills approach to camping, focusing on clean basic facilities and easy access to outdoor adventures beyond the campground's immediate boundaries. Campers should be prepared for potential fire restrictions, especially during dry seasons, and always practice Leave No Trace principles. While it may not offer the deep serenity of more remote campgrounds, White Cloud Campground provides a functional, affordable, and well-maintained option for those searching "Camping Near Me" along Highway 20 in the beautiful Sierra Nevada foothills.

White Cloud Campground Reviews
We stayed 8.15.24, no campfires allowed at this time. Campsites are good size, and both Campsites & bathrooms were clean. Lots of tree coverage and you can hear road noise from Hwy 20. $24 a night 1/2 off with senior pass.
Aug 18, 2024 · Caren TegCampsites themselves are very nice but this is the loudest campground I've ever stayed at. Had to leave after one night cause of the trucks going up and down the hill, got no sleep. During the day there are helicopters flying over head. Seems like a good place to stop if you are traveling though
Jul 26, 2024 · Nemo WoofyLoved our weekend at this campground. Beautiful trees, site’s space was good. First night was fantastic- quiet and peaceful. Second night had a group of 12 move into the spaces next to us and they were up until 1am. Normally, I don’t mind folks enjoying their time, but several were very loud and obnoxious, it was a bit disruptive. Camp host did not seem to mind, however. Overall a great spot!! Bathroom kept clean, camp host came around several times during the day.
Mar 12, 2024 · Monet cornelisonMust have passed this place a hundred times over the years en route to Lake Tahoe. Finally made White Cloud the destination instead and had a great two-day stay. Close to Nevada City and a great swimming hole.
