Scotts Flat Lake Introduce
Scotts Flat Lake Campground, located at 23333 Scotts Flat Rd, Nevada City, CA 95959, USA, is a highly regarded destination for outdoor enthusiasts and families seeking a memorable camping experience in the beautiful Sierra Foothills. For anyone actively searching "Camping Near Me" in the Northern California area, Scotts Flat Lake offers a compelling combination of stunning natural beauty, direct lake access, and a good range of amenities.
You can contact Scotts Flat Lake Campground for reservations and inquiries at (530) 265-5302. Operated by the Nevada Irrigation District (NID), the campground is open year-round, offering opportunities for enjoyment across all seasons, though the peak season (typically summer) can be quite busy.
Scotts Flat Lake Campground is set at an elevation of approximately 3,000 feet, nestled alongside the 850-acre Scotts Flat Reservoir. The environment is characterized by its tall pine trees, which provide a natural canopy and a sense of being immersed in the forest. The primary draw of the campground is its exceptional relationship with the lake. Reviewers consistently praise the "waterfront campsites" as "absolutely amazing" and "beautiful," offering "gorgeous" views and "direct access to the lake." This direct access is a significant advantage, particularly for those who enjoy swimming, having "water toys" like paddleboards, or simply relaxing by the shore without the need to travel to a separate day-use area where parking can be limited.
While the campground can be "crowded" during peak season (e.g., July), a common recommendation from experienced campers is to visit during the "off-season" (e.g., April). During these times, campers are "more likely to snag a waterfront campsite and not have too many neighbors," offering a more peaceful and serene experience. The blend of a forested setting with direct lake access creates a versatile environment, perfect for both active water sports and tranquil relaxation. The mild winters in this elevation also allow for year-round visitation, with beautiful fall colors and spring wildflowers adding to the seasonal appeal.
Scotts Flat Lake Campground provides a comfortable camping experience with several key amenities designed to cater to various types of campers:
- P Campsites: The campground offers 171 individual campsites, divided between two gates (Gate 1 with 96 single sites and Gate 2 with 75 single sites). These sites can accommodate tents, trailers, and RVs. While hookups are not available at individual RV sites, the campground does have a dump station for RVs. Each site generally comes with a picnic table and a campfire ring, perfect for enjoying outdoor meals and s'mores.
- P Restrooms and Showers: A highly praised feature of Scotts Flat Lake Campground is its "clean bathrooms and hot showers." These are quarter-operated hot water showers available in both Gate 1 and Gate 2, along with flush toilets in multiple areas, many of which are handicap accessible. This level of cleanliness and comfort for facilities is a significant advantage for campers.
- P Water Access: The direct lake access from many waterfront sites is a major highlight, making it convenient for launching small watercraft like paddleboards or kayaks, swimming, and fishing.
- P General Store: A well-stocked general store is available within the recreation area, providing supplies, snacks, and any forgotten essentials.
- P Playground: A playground is located in Gate 2, near the store, offering entertainment for younger visitors.
- P Boat Launch: Concrete boat launching ramps are available, and the marina offers boat with motor rentals, buoy moorings, and gas/oil, catering to boaters.
- P Pet Policy: Pets are allowed at Scotts Flat Lake Campground but must be kept on a leash and attended to at all times. There is a fee per night, per pet, and pets are explicitly "NOT allowed in the swim or beach areas." A maximum of two pets are allowed per campsite.
- P Security: The NID emphasizes active measures to keep bears away, including regular garbage collection and security making late-night trash runs. However, campers are still advised to keep a clean campsite and store food securely in vehicles, as bear lockers are not explicitly listed as available at each site, according to some NID FAQs.
For those searching "Camping Near Me" with an emphasis on comfort and convenience near water, Scotts Flat Lake's offerings of clean facilities and direct lake access are particularly appealing. The availability of a dump station for RVs further caters to the needs of self-contained vehicles.
Scotts Flat Lake is a hub for a wide array of outdoor activities, catering to various interests:
- P Water Sports: The lake is ideal for swimming, paddleboarding, kayaking, canoeing, and fishing. Powerboating and waterskiing are also popular. However, personal watercraft like jet skis and wave runners are explicitly not allowed on Scotts Flat Lake, which contributes to a more serene boating environment for other users.
- P Fishing: The lake is well-known for its excellent fishing opportunities. Anglers can expect to catch rainbow trout, brown trout, kokanee salmon, smallmouth and largemouth bass, catfish, and bluegill. Specific areas are renowned for trout fishing, and the lake is stocked regularly.
- P Hiking and Biking: The surrounding area offers numerous trails for hiking and biking, allowing campers to explore the scenic landscapes. The Campground Trail (1 mile, easy) follows the lake, while the Scotts Flat Trail (4.5 miles, intermediate) offers a longer experience. The Pioneer Trail (26 miles, easy to advanced) extends through the Tahoe National Forest, providing extensive opportunities.
- P BBQ and S'mores: The presence of campfire rings and picnic tables at each site encourages classic camping traditions like barbecuing and making s'mores, contributing to a relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere.
- P Year-Round Appeal: While summer is popular, the mild winters allow for continued enjoyment. The area is close to Nevada City and Grass Valley, which host winter festivals like Victorian Christmas and Cornish Christmas, providing off-season attractions.
The lifestyle at Scotts Flat Lake Campground is one of embracing the outdoors, whether through active water sports, peaceful lakeside relaxation, or exploring the surrounding trails. It's a place where "memorable experiences" are made, with many families returning year after year, drawn by the combination of natural beauty and recreational opportunities.
Scotts Flat Lake Campground is consistently portrayed as a fantastic value and an ideal place for a family vacation or a serene getaway. The emphasis on "friendly staff" and "clean facilities" reinforces a positive guest experience. The ability to "snag a waterfront campsite" during the off-season offers a unique selling point for those seeking tranquility and unobstructed views.
Reservation for individual sites can be made online or by phone. It's important to be aware of the reservation policies, including cancellation fees ($25 per reservation) and no refunds within 14 days of arrival or for holiday bookings. Fees include nightly site rates (e.g., $52 for a tent site, $62 for a waterfront tent site, $62 for an RV site, $68 for a waterfront RV site), plus additional charges for extra vehicles, pets, and boats. Group sites are also available with varying capacities and rates.
Campers are advised to be mindful of fire restrictions, which can be imposed due to weather conditions. Proper trash disposal in designated containers is emphasized to maintain cleanliness and deter wildlife. Overall, Scotts Flat Lake Campground offers a quintessential Northern California camping experience, balancing natural beauty with essential comforts, making it a highly recommended choice for anyone searching for "Camping Near Me" that promises relaxation, recreation, and lasting memories.

Scotts Flat Lake Reviews
Scotts Flat Campground is the perfect place for a memorable experience. If you get lucky and it is not too crowded, it is even better! We have gone twice once in July (crowded), and recently, in their off-season (April). I recommend off-season since you are more likely to snag a waterfront campsite and not have too many neighbors. The waterfront campsites are absolutely amazing. The view is gorgeous and convenient if you like to swim or have water toys. We enjoyed paddle boarding, fishing having bbqs, and smores. It's really nice to have direct access to the lake it saves you having to travel down to the day use area where parking can be limited. There are clean bathrooms and hot showers.
Apr 17, 2025 · Tanya MerazWe love camping at Scott's flat! The waterfront sites are absolutely beautiful! You get your own lake access and incredible views. Friendly staff and clean bathrooms.
Apr 01, 2025 · Anna FirsovaWe have been camping here since 2007. Every year for Father's Day and labor day and this year we missed labor day and decided to do a spur of the moment campout this weekend since it's still really hot the first week of October. Since it's off season, there was almost nobody there and it was wonderful!! More so than usual since it wasn't loud and crowded. The grandkids had a blast! The only drawback was the long trek to the water since it is down so low. I can't say enough good stuff about this campground ❤️. And i got to give our 9 year old granddaughter her first kayak lesson!
Oct 07, 2024 · Kathy MarquezJust a beautiful and secluded spot! Wow! We had a wonderful time swimming and sun bathing and bearly saw another person. They have toilets and parking which is helpful. The only thing to note is that the time we went it was very low and so the 'beach' was more of a mud flat. It was fine for us, but you'd be disappointed if you were expecting a sandy beach
Sep 25, 2024 · Deborah QuigleyGate one camp site 8.The lake is great, the expensive campground bathrooms, showers needs hygiene Maintenance. They come by and fill the toilet paper but the bathroom and shower room floor needs to be cleaned up ( clumps of hair, mud). For $150 for two nights is way over priced for a dry camp with this under par hygiene Maintenance .We had a bear rip apart the neighbors ice chest at 2:30 am, the NID Maintenance man pick up all the trash cans at 9:30 pm the bear 🐻 tore into the garbage can and had a meal at 1:30 am from trash placed into the trash can after Maintenance man picked up trash. At the dam corner is the only sandy beach on the lake at gate 1 .The water level was about 30ft down from over flow as seen in photo, not bad for August, I've seem the water level lower before at scotts flat in August. There is A sewer pond and three electrical out lets 20amp, 30amp, and 50amp next to site 8For $150 for two nights of dry camping I would go elsewhere.3 WEEKS LATER We stayed at SNOW FLOWER RV camp just 25 miles further about the same cost, but Electricity, water, a swimming pool, supper clean bathrooms, clean showers with NO COIN operation.Hot water as long as you want.$69.00 a nightThe last two photos are from Snow Flower rv camp.
