We booked campsites 56 and 57 and were both on a steep hill. All of the campsites were mostly on hills, with the exception of about 10 throughout the campground. There were very many mosquitos after the wet winter, so unfortunately, our whole group came home with mosquito bites on our faces, necks, legs, and arms despite using lots of bug spray. There are not many places to access the lake if you are looking to swim. The bathrooms were nice with flush toilets and pay showers, but could be cleaned a little more often. We did encounter many deer, saw lizards, and heard turkeys and frogs, which was cool. The camp staff were some of the nicest we've encountered and drove through very frequently. You can buy firewood at the gate, too. You Bet Road from Hwy 174 is a bit curvy, so bring your dramamine if you're prone to getting car sick. - Laura Williams

Peninsula Camping & Boating Introduce

Welcome to a comprehensive introduction to Peninsula Camping & Boating, a distinctive campground located at 21597 You Bet Rd, Grass Valley, CA 95945, USA. For those seeking "Camping Near Me" in the Northern California region, particularly around Rollins Lake, Peninsula Camping & Boating offers a specific type of outdoor experience. This detailed overview aims to provide an objective introduction to the campground, encompassing its environment, available services and features, and important considerations gleaned from real customer experiences.

Peninsula Camping & Boating can be contacted directly at (530) 477-9413 or via mobile at +1 530-477-9413 for reservations and inquiries. As its name suggests, it is designed to cater to both campers and boating enthusiasts, capitalizing on its location on Rollins Lake. The campground is managed by the Nevada Irrigation District (NID) and offers various campsites, including those suitable for tents and RVs.

The environment of Peninsula Camping & Boating is characterized by its setting on a peninsula extending into Rollins Lake, offering "a wonderful view of the lake" from many sites. However, a significant environmental feature to note is the terrain; "All of the campsites were mostly on hills, with the exception of about 10 throughout the campground." This means that many sites are on a "steep hill" or "mountain side," requiring "tent and table areas were cut out in order to be flat enough." This undulating terrain can make setting up tents and shade covers challenging due to "limited space" and the risk of "falling." The ground itself is described as "red dirt," and the lakebed near some access points is "red dirt with slippery clay."

Wildlife is a notable aspect of the campground's environment. Campers have "encountered many deer, saw lizards, and heard turkeys and frogs," which contributes to an immersive natural experience. However, the wet winter can lead to a significant presence of insects, as reported by one group who experienced "very many mosquitos after the wet winter," resulting in numerous bites despite bug spray. This suggests that during certain seasons, campers should be well-prepared for mosquito activity.

In terms of lake access for swimming, reviews indicate that there are "not many places to access the lake if you are looking to swim" directly from many campsites. While the general lake access might be limited by the hilly and potentially slippery clay terrain, one review specifically mentions that "the swimming area is flat and not slippery," implying designated and more accessible swim spots exist, and that "The lake was warm enough to swim in and enjoy. The was even a rope swing," which adds a fun element for water enthusiasts.

Regarding services and features, Peninsula Camping & Boating provides essential amenities for a comfortable camping trip. The "bathrooms were nice with flush toilets and pay showers." While some reviewers suggested they "could be cleaned a little more often," the presence of modern facilities like flush toilets and hot showers is a significant advantage. The campground also offers convenient services such as purchasing "firewood at the gate." The on-site "store and gate employees were helpful and kind," contributing positively to the overall guest experience. A pleasant surprise noted by a camper was that "the store prices for ice cream was not overinflated! What a pleasant surprise because many camping trips the stores have been outrageous." This indicates that some on-site amenities offer reasonable value.

For boating enthusiasts, the campground's name implies dedicated facilities. While the given reviews do not explicitly detail boat launch ramps or dock facilities, the "Boating" in the name strongly suggests these are core offerings, catering to lake activities. Campers should confirm the operational status of boat docking, as one review from Orchard Springs (a nearby NID campground) mentioned boat docking was closed for a specific weekend, which could be a temporary or seasonal issue across the lake's facilities.

Access to the campground is via "You Bet Road from Hwy 174," which is described as "a bit curvy," prompting a suggestion to "bring your dramamine if you're prone to getting car sick." This information is valuable for planning travel to the site, especially for those in larger RVs or with passengers susceptible to motion sickness.

Promotional information for Peninsula Camping & Boating, aimed at those searching "Camping Near Me," would naturally emphasize its stunning lake views from many campsites and its direct access to Rollins Lake for boating and water activities. The availability of clean flush toilets and pay showers, along with the friendly staff, would be key selling points. The presence of diverse wildlife and the opportunity for a peaceful, natural escape would also appeal to many campers. Highlighting the reasonable pricing of some store items, like ice cream, could also be a subtle but effective positive detail.

To provide a fully objective promotion, it would be beneficial for the campground to transparently address the challenges associated with its terrain. For example, marketing materials could advise campers about the hilly nature of most sites, suggesting certain sites for those with mobility issues or large setups, or providing clearer guidance on site selection. Acknowledging the potential for mosquitoes during certain seasons and advising on preparedness (e.g., bringing bug spray) would also be helpful. Addressing the perceived need for more frequent bathroom cleaning, if applicable, would also demonstrate attentiveness to guest feedback.

In conclusion, Peninsula Camping & Boating offers a unique camping experience on Rollins Lake, characterized by its beautiful lake views and abundant wildlife. It provides essential amenities like flush toilets and showers, and boasts friendly staff and reasonably priced store items. However, prospective campers should be prepared for the hilly terrain of many campsites, potential mosquito activity depending on the season, and limited direct lake access for swimming from all sites. The access road to the campground is also noted as curvy. For inquiries and reservations, Peninsula Camping & Boating can be contacted at (530) 477-9413 or +1 530-477-9413. Thorough planning, including site selection based on terrain preferences and preparedness for insects, will contribute to a more enjoyable camping experience at this distinct Rollins Lake destination.
