Twin Lakes Camp Introduce
If you're searching for "camping near me" and are drawn to a more natural and less developed setting, Twin Lakes Camp, located on Forest Service Rd 104-A, Gilbertsville, KY 42044, USA, might be of interest. Based on the available reviews, this location offers a beautiful environment with opportunities for hiking and kayaking, coupled with a more primitive camping experience.
One enthusiastic traveler initially declared Twin Lakes Camp to be their "favorite in us" out of all their travels, expressing a strong desire to return. This positive initial impression highlights the inherent beauty and appeal of the location. However, a subsequent visit by the same person revealed a more nuanced experience. During a return trip in February 2023, they found their previously preferred spot occupied. They also encountered issues with skunks, as their dog was sprayed, leading to a lingering odor. Additionally, this reviewer noted a significant amount of trash, attributing it to potential funding cuts for forest rangers. Despite these challenges, they still acknowledged the place as "beautiful," albeit with a different experience on the second visit.
This reviewer's experience serves as a reminder to "SUPPORT YR LOCAL WILDLIFE PRESERVES AND STOP DUMPING TRASH," underscoring the importance of responsible outdoor behavior and the potential impact of environmental factors on the camping experience. They also cautioned about skunks, noting that the smell of being sprayed is distinctly unpleasant and can even cause illness.
Another visitor, who was there primarily for a hike, observed "a couple of primitive camp sites and one plastic Porta Potty." This confirms that camping at Twin Lakes Camp is indeed primitive, likely lacking amenities such as running water, electrical hookups, and maintained restroom facilities beyond a portable toilet. For those seeking a more rugged and self-sufficient "camping near me" option, this could be appealing. This reviewer also noted that the location is a "great scenic hike" and a good place to launch a kayak. The hiking trail is described as "well marked" with loops, making it difficult to get lost. Access to water for swimming is also mentioned, though the reviewer suggested there are "way better spots for that," recommending instead to "Come for the great hike."
Based on these reviews, the environment of Twin Lakes Camp is undoubtedly beautiful, offering scenic hiking trails and water access suitable for kayaking. The presence of skunks is a factor to be aware of. The camping is primitive, with at least a couple of sites and a portable toilet, suggesting a more backcountry feel. The issue of trash indicates a potential need for visitors to be particularly mindful of Leave No Trace principles.
In summary, Twin Lakes Camp offers:
- A beautiful natural environment.
- Primitive campsites (at least a couple).
- At least one portable toilet.
- Well-marked and scenic hiking trails with loops.
- Access to water for kayaking and potentially swimming (though swimming is not highly recommended by one reviewer).
Potential considerations for visitors include:
- The presence of skunks.
- The need to be self-sufficient due to the primitive nature of the camping.
- The possibility of encountering trash, suggesting a need to pack out everything you pack in and potentially help with cleanup if possible.
For local users searching for "camping near me" who are comfortable with primitive camping and prioritize scenic beauty and activities like hiking and kayaking, Twin Lakes Camp could be a worthwhile destination. The positive remarks about the beauty of the area and the quality of the hiking trails are significant draws. However, it's important to be prepared for a more rugged experience and to be aware of the potential environmental challenges mentioned in the reviews.
If you are looking for a "camping near me" experience that emphasizes immersion in nature and outdoor activities over developed amenities, Twin Lakes Camp in Gilbertsville, KY, might be your ideal spot. Be prepared for primitive conditions, be mindful of wildlife like skunks, and consider bringing your own supplies and being ready to pack out all trash. The reward appears to be a beautiful setting with excellent hiking and kayaking opportunities. For more information, you might try contacting the relevant forest service office, as a direct phone number for the camp itself is not provided in the reviews.

Mar 11, 2023 · cLOVErWas here just for a hike but it looked like there were a couple of primitive camp sites and one plastic Porta Potty. So if you are looking for a great senic hike or a place to launch a kayak, this is the place to be. The trail is well marked and loops so it is hard to get lost. Also you can access the water for swimming, but honestly, there are way better spots for that. Come for the great hike.
