Monterey Fairgrounds RV Park Introduce
If you're searching for "RV parks near me" in the Monterey, California area, the Monterey Fairgrounds RV Park, located at 2004 Fairground Rd, Monterey, CA 93940, USA, presents itself as a budget-friendly option in a convenient location. You can reach them at (831) 717-7167 or +1 831-717-7167 for inquiries. Based on recent customer feedback, the park offers a mix of practical advantages and potential drawbacks that are important for prospective visitors to consider.
One reviewer found the location to be a significant asset, noting its proximity to attractions and transit. However, they also pointed out a notable environmental factor: overhead airplane noise. This is something to be aware of if you are sensitive to noise. On the positive side, the reviewer mentioned that the park feels secure and was the most affordable option they could find in the Monterey area. They described it as "basically a parking lot with hookups and a bathroom," indicating a no-frills approach to amenities. The presence of a gated access system with a code for after-hours entry contributes to the sense of security.
A crucial operational detail highlighted in the review is the check-in requirement before 5 pm. This can be challenging for travelers arriving later in the day, as the reviewer themselves experienced. The parking spots are described as "very tight and short," which could be a significant consideration for RVs with slide-outs, as deploying them might leave very little space between neighbors. Additionally, for most spots, parking a tow vehicle requires a separate space, potentially adding to inconvenience and possibly cost.
Despite these limitations, the reviewer concluded that Monterey Fairgrounds RV Park is a "decent place" and, despite being "nothing special," they would consider staying there again due to its convenience and price. They did note that even with its affordability relative to other options in the area, it still felt "overpriced for what you get." The reviewer also recounted a negative initial interaction when calling to ask a question prior to booking, describing the staff member as "quite rude" and unhelpful, directing them to the website instead.
In stark contrast, another reviewer shared a significantly negative experience. Arriving just five minutes before the 5 pm check-in deadline after a long day of travel with limited data and cellphone coverage, they were met with an unwelcoming reception at the park gate. An "older grumpy guy" was reportedly in the process of closing the gate and, upon inquiry about a one-night stay, allegedly shouted, "Get of the road!!!" before even asking if they had a reservation.
Upon parking near the office and approaching on foot, the reviewer claims the same individual shouted again, "You have to talk to me!" When they attempted to explain their situation, he repeatedly asked if they had a reservation. Instead of engaging in a dialogue, he reportedly walked to the gate, pointed at a sign with opening hours that included a line stating "reservations needed," and then questioned their ability to read before walking away, effectively refusing them entry.
This account paints a picture of potentially unwelcoming and inflexible management, particularly regarding arrivals close to or after the stated check-in time, even in extenuating circumstances. The emphasis on reservations and the lack of willingness to accommodate a late arrival, as described, could be a major deterrent for travelers who may face unforeseen delays.
Considering both reviews, Monterey Fairgrounds RV Park appears to be a no-frills option primarily valued for its location and relative affordability within the often-expensive Monterey area. It offers basic hookups and security features like a gated entrance. However, potential drawbacks include significant airplane noise, tight parking spaces that may require separate parking for tow vehicles, a strict check-in policy, and the possibility of encountering rude or unaccommodating staff. The discrepancy between the two reviews, one highlighting a tolerable experience for the price and location, and the other detailing a very negative interaction with staff, suggests that individual experiences may vary.
For those searching "RV parks near me" in Monterey on a budget and prioritizing location, Monterey Fairgrounds RV Park might be a viable option, provided they can adhere to the check-in time and are prepared for potentially cramped conditions and noise. However, it is crucial to be aware of the reported issues with customer service and the strict adherence to rules, even in situations where travelers might face unavoidable delays. It would be prudent for prospective visitors to confirm their arrival time well in advance and to have a reservation, as suggested by the negative review. Additionally, inquiring about the specific layout of the parking spots and the policy regarding tow vehicle parking would be beneficial.
In conclusion, Monterey Fairgrounds RV Park offers a basic and relatively inexpensive RV parking option in a desirable location, but it comes with potential downsides such as noise, tight spaces, and the risk of negative interactions with staff. Travelers should carefully weigh these factors against the park's affordability and convenience before making a booking, especially considering the importance of adhering to the check-in time and the potential need for reservations.

Monterey Fairgrounds RV Park Reviews
This place is fine enough. Great location (but you will definitely hear planes overhead). It’s secure and the cheapest option we found in the area. Basically a parking lot with hookups and a bathroom. There is a gate with a code for after hours access. You do need to check in before 5pm which is sometimes hard for us to make happen but we made it. Spots are very tight and short. With everyone’s slides out you’re almost touching your neighbors. And for most of the spots you’ll have to park your tow vehicle in a separate spot. All in all it’s a decent place. Nothing special but we would stay there again for the convenience and price. Still overpriced for what you get but like I said, best we could find in the area. I called to ask a question before booking and the woman I spoke with was quite rude and told me “I am very busy, look on the website”. Despite this we still booked because there were so few options with availability that weren’t $150+ a night.
May 06, 2025 · Melissa McCrawWhat a horrible experience...After a full day of travel and mostly no coverage for data and cellphone we arrived 5 minutes before 1700 at the site. The ride was a bit stressful because we knew check-in after 1700 was not possible. When we wanted to enter the park an older grumpy guy was about to close the gate. We rolled the window down and asked if there was room for one moor for one night. He first asked: " Do you have a reservation and suddenly shouted: "Get of the road!!!". We were startled, pulled up on the grounds and parked near the office. When we walked to the office he shouted again: "You have to talk to me!". We told ourselves to stay calm and walked over. Again he asked: "Do you have a reservation?" When we tried to explain he just walked to the gate and pointed at a sign with openinghours and one line _did_ say "reservations needed".We asked him: "So you just gonna send us away?" He then asked us if we could read and walked away.
Mar 27, 2025 · Richard van der VeenCalling this a campground is a bit false advertising. Only place I could find to stay for Sea Otter. $75/night for an asphalt parking spot w power, water, and sewer. And in the flight path of the (fortunately not too busy) airport. They do keep the bathroom clean!
Apr 11, 2025 · Chris HMy family and I booked an overnight stay and were planning to arrive around 6 PM. The person called us saying we couldn’t arrive after that time (which we’ve never seen before since all RV parks usually allow late arrivals). We ended up without a place to sleep and had to spend the night in a Walmart parking lot. Honestly, I never want to go back to this place again. The manager is SUPER RUDE! DONT GO THERE!!!!!
Dec 28, 2024 · Renata Rodrigues FurtadoWe love this place. They made sure we had enough space for our car and spread us out so our neighbors weren't too close. The bathrooms are nice and clean and the shower is huge and has lots of hot water. The entire fairground is gated and after 5 you need a code to get in which is a nice added layer of security. It is in the flight path of an airport so sometimes there is some noise from the planes overhead but not at unreasonable hours. We are big fans and we will be coming back here. Its very close to things to do and nice to walk around inside.
