When searching for "campgrounds near me" in the Alexandria Bay area, 1000 Islands Campground stands out for its welcoming atmosphere and well-maintained facilities. Reviews consistently praise the staff for being "awesome" and "very friendly," indicating a commitment to guest satisfaction. This positive interaction with campground personnel can significantly enhance the overall camping experience, making visitors feel welcome and well-cared for.
Cleanliness is a crucial aspect for any camper, and 1000 Islands Campground appears to excel in this area. Multiple reviews specifically mention the bathrooms being "very clean" and "well kept" and "modern." This attention to hygiene ensures a comfortable and pleasant stay for all guests, a factor that many campers highly value.
The campground's location offers a significant advantage for those looking to explore the local attractions. It is conveniently situated within walking distance of Grass Point State Park. This proximity allows campers easy access to the state park's amenities and natural beauty, potentially including waterfront access, picnic areas, and hiking trails. The convenience of being able to walk to a nearby state park adds considerable value to the camping experience at 1000 Islands Campground.
Furthermore, 1000 Islands Campground is located close to both the charming town of Clayton and the popular tourist destination of Alexandria Bay. Clayton, mentioned as being just a 6-minute drive away, offers a "beautiful waterfront park," a grocery store for stocking up on essentials, and many "quaint little stores" to explore. This provides campers with easy access to local amenities and opportunities for sightseeing and shopping. One reviewer even enjoyed a Clayton Island Tour out to Rock Island Lighthouse, highlighting the accessibility of local excursions from the campground.
Next door to the campground, visitors will find Gal's Place, a lovely convenience store that also serves delicious ice cream. This immediate proximity to a store for basic needs and a treat like ice cream adds another layer of convenience and enjoyment to staying at 1000 Islands Campground.
The campground itself is described as being of a "decent size," offering a good number of campsites. While one reviewer noted that they "lucked out with a huge site" while traveling with a 19-foot trailer, it suggests that the sites are generally of a good size to accommodate various types of camping setups. It's always advisable to inquire about site dimensions when making a reservation to ensure it meets your specific needs.
For those traveling with trailers or RVs, the modern shower house at 1000 Islands Campground is a significant amenity. It features four separate rooms, each equipped with a shower, toilet, and sink. This setup provides privacy and convenience for campers, and one reviewer who stayed during the week noted that they never had to wait to use the shower, suggesting ample capacity during less busy times. However, it's mentioned that weekends might be busier due to the presence of mostly seasonal sites.
Families with young children will appreciate the small playground available at the campground, offering a space for kids to play and burn off some energy. While there is no pool on-site, the proximity to waterfront areas (Grass Point State Park and the nearby towns) provides alternative options for water-related activities.
An often-overlooked but valuable amenity for campers is the availability of firewood. At 1000 Islands Campground, firewood is offered at $5 a bundle, which was noted as a "great deal" by one visitor. Having affordable firewood readily available enhances the camping experience, allowing for campfires for cooking and ambiance without the hassle of sourcing it elsewhere.
The helpfulness of the staff at 1000 Islands Campground extends beyond general friendliness. One remarkable instance involved a Canadian visitor who had difficulty using their cell phone to contact their family doctor. The camp host on duty went above and beyond by allowing the guest to use the office phone for a long-distance call, even refusing payment for the charges. This level of customer service demonstrates a genuine commitment to the well-being of their guests and fosters a positive and supportive environment.

1000 Islands Campground Reviews
Great campground! The staff were awesome, bathrooms very clean, walking distance to Grass Point State Park and close to both Clayton and Alexandria Bay. Lovely convenience store and delicious ice cream next door at Gal's Place. We'll be back!
Aug 13, 2024 · Vicki Herzl WatkinsWe are Canadians and I found this campground by fluke when searching Google to research our family vacation. We stayed here for 4 nights. The campground is decent size and the camp hosts are very friendly. The sites are a good size but we lucked out with a huge site and a 19 foot trailer. The washrooms are well kept and modern. The shower house is also nice with 4 separate rooms each having a shower, toilet and sink. I never had to wait to use the shower as we were here throughout the week and it wasn't busy. Weekends would likely be different as it sems ti be mostly seasonal sites. There is no pool, but the small playground would be good for younger children. Firewood is $5 a bundle which is a great deal. A 6 minute drive will bring you to the closest hamlet of Clayton which has a beautiful waterfront park, a grocery store and many quaint little stores. We did the Clayton Island Tour out to Rock Island Lighthouse. Back to the campground tho......as previously mentioned I am Canadian and my cell phone would not allow me to make any calls. I needed to get in touch with my family Dr. over a concern for my teenage son. Not knowing what else to do I went to the office, explained my situation and the camp host on duty allowed me to use the office phone to call my Dr. I offered to pay the long distance charge and was told not to worry about it. I would 100% reccomend this campground if you are in the area.
Aug 08, 2024 · Diane LawrenceMy daughter and I spent 5 nights in one of the "Glamping tents". It was so nice not having to put up and take down our tent. Bathrooms and showers were ALWAYS clean. Everyone was friendly. Location is perfect, 10 mins from Clayton, Alex Bay and Wellesley Island. Cute ice cream place within walking distance (Gals Place), which is also a small store and Deli. Also within walking distance to the Beach at Grassy Point Park. Such a nice place!!
Aug 03, 2024 · Shari FruchtelPlease note! Despite the deceiving pictures, there is absolutely NO water access at this campground. You cannot see the bay, the seaway or any vessels sailing by. They will tell you there is a path to the state park next to them where you can view the water but it is often impassable, and once you pop out at the state park it is still a long-a** hike. Camp at Grass Point State Park next door. 1000 Islands campground despite no water access is clean and the office staff were very friendly and helpful. They offered us a pass to get into the state park next door free, but you shouldn’t have to go to another campground! Especially difficult when you have a motorhome! False advertising. Be forewarned!
Jul 22, 2024 · Cindi HBooked this last minute after spending a 90 degree night at Keewaydin without hookups. The staff were so friendly and helpful. The spots were more spacious than Keewaydin. The bathrooms were spotless. There was a dump station which was super convenient. Very convenient location close to Clayton and Alexandria Bay. We would definitely stay here again!
