Wellesley Island State Campground

Wellesley Island, NY 13640, USA

4.0
I think it's a standard state park. Only stayed on night. Small beach, some sites with hook ups, some great sites right on the st Lawrence. Good playground, marina, cabins, and cottages. I guess it might have more than average for state park. It was also somehow very quite. Campground was almost 100% booked and no one was at the beach. Cooler but still nice summer day. 15 or kids at the playground. Not sure where everyone was. - Curtis D

Wellesley Island State Campground Introduce

For those in search of "camping near me" with access to the stunning St. Lawrence River, Wellesley Island State Campground in Wellesley Island, NY, presents a compelling option. Situated directly on Wellesley Island, this state park offers a range of amenities and a beautiful natural environment for a memorable camping experience. While a specific phone number isn't provided in the information, you can likely find contact details and make reservations through the New York State Parks system.

Based on feedback from visitors, Wellesley Island State Campground offers what one reviewer considered a "standard state park" experience, but with potentially more to offer than average. One of the notable features is its diverse range of accommodation options and facilities. These include "some sites with hook ups," which is beneficial for RV campers, as well as "some great sites right on the St Lawrence," promising picturesque waterfront views and easy access to the river. The presence of a "small beach" provides opportunities for swimming and enjoying the water's edge. For families, a "good playground" is available, ensuring that children have a dedicated space for recreation.

Beyond the campsites, the campground also boasts a "marina," which is a significant advantage for boating enthusiasts looking to explore the St. Lawrence River and the surrounding islands. Additionally, for those seeking a more structured lodging experience, the park offers "cabins, and cottages," providing alternatives to traditional tent or RV camping. This variety of options makes Wellesley Island State Campground appealing to a broad range of visitors with different accommodation preferences.

Interestingly, despite being "almost 100% booked" on a "cooler but still nice summer day," one reviewer noted that the campground was "somehow very quiet," and surprisingly, "no one was at the beach" while there were only "15 or kids at the playground." This observation suggests that the layout of the campground or the preferences of the visitors at that time contributed to a peaceful atmosphere, even at near full capacity. This quiet ambiance could be a significant draw for those looking for a more tranquil camping experience.

Another visitor shared details about their enjoyable stay in a "nice electric only campsite (C23) which had a good mix of shade and sun." This highlights the availability of at least some electric campsites, which are often preferred by RVers for powering appliances and devices. They also appreciated the presence of a "clean laundry room," a practical amenity, especially for longer trips. It was noted that "many of the campsites are 20/30A electric only," providing further clarity on the electrical hookup situation for RVs.

However, this reviewer also pointed out an area for potential improvement regarding the RV-friendliness of the campsites. They mentioned that "the water spigots were located very far from the road, making it difficult to fill the water tanks on your RV without pulling far into the grass." They suggested that "since most of the campers are camping there in RVs they could remedy this by making the campsites more RV friendly." This is a valuable piece of feedback for potential RV campers to be aware of when planning their stay.

On a more positive note, the reviewer recounted meeting an older couple who had been returning to the same campsite for two weeks every year for the past 51 years, which speaks volumes about the enduring appeal and quality of Wellesley Island State Campground for some visitors. This long-term loyalty suggests a consistently positive experience over many years.

For those who enjoy water activities, this guest also "really enjoyed kayaking amongst all the small islands in the area," indicating that the location is excellent for exploring the waterways by kayak. This adds another dimension to the outdoor recreation opportunities available at the campground, beyond just the small beach and the marina.

In conclusion, Wellesley Island State Campground offers a diverse range of amenities and a beautiful setting on the St. Lawrence River, making it a strong contender for "camping near me." Its features include some campsites with electrical hookups, waterfront sites, a small beach, a playground, a marina, and cabin/cottage rentals. While one review suggests that water spigot placement could be more RV-friendly, the overall sentiment is positive, with many appreciating the quiet atmosphere and the recreational opportunities, particularly for boating and kayaking. The long-term return of some visitors underscores its lasting appeal.

For local users seeking a state park experience with more amenities than average, situated in a picturesque location with access to the St. Lawrence River, Wellesley Island State Campground is worth considering. The availability of different types of accommodations caters to various preferences, and the on-site marina is a significant plus for boaters. While specific promotional information isn't available in these reviews, the consistently positive mentions of the location and the range of facilities serve as a strong indication of its value as a camping destination. We recommend exploring the New York State Parks website to get more details and make reservations for your adventure on Wellesley Island.
