By analyzing these firsthand accounts and considering the surrounding environment, we can provide a detailed introduction to Aweigh Downeast Lodge & Cabins for those seeking a tranquil cabin experience in Maine.
Charming and Cozy Cabinettes
One of the standout features highlighted by a guest is the availability of "lovely lil cabinettes (lol)." This affectionate description suggests that the cabins are cozy and perhaps on the smaller side, ideal for individuals or small groups seeking a comfortable and intimate space. The use of "lovely" indicates a positive aesthetic, implying that the cabins are well-maintained and appealing. For local users looking for a step up from traditional tent camping while still enjoying a rustic feel, these cabinettes could be an excellent option.
Exceptional Hospitality and Friendly Owners
A recurring theme in the reviews is the exceptional hospitality provided by the owners of Aweigh Downeast Lodge & Cabins. One guest specifically mentioned that "The couple who own this business are very friendly and did everything possible to make our stay great." This personal touch and dedication to guest satisfaction can significantly enhance the overall experience. The owners' willingness to go above and beyond, even offering to move guests due to a minor plumbing issue (which the guest felt was unnecessary), demonstrates a strong commitment to ensuring a comfortable stay for everyone. This level of care suggests that local users can expect a warm and welcoming reception.
Peaceful Location in the Quiet Town of Pembroke
The location of Aweigh Downeast Lodge & Cabins in the town of Pembroke is another significant draw, particularly for those seeking tranquility. One reviewer noted that "The lil town of Pembroke is so quiet and that's exactly what we needed." This peaceful environment offers a welcome escape from the noise and bustle of more urban areas, making it an ideal destination for relaxation and rejuvenation. For local users looking for a "camping near me" experience that prioritizes serenity, Pembroke and Aweigh Downeast Lodge & Cabins seem to fit the bill perfectly.
Proximity to Natural Attractions: Moosehorn Wildlife Refuge
A major advantage of staying at Aweigh Downeast Lodge & Cabins is its close proximity to the Moosehorn National Wildlife Refuge. One guest explicitly stated that this was "the main reason for our visit to that area." The Moosehorn National Wildlife Refuge is a significant natural area known for its diverse habitats and abundant wildlife, including moose, various bird species, and other fauna. This proximity offers excellent opportunities for nature lovers, birdwatchers, and those interested in exploring Maine's natural beauty. Local users who enjoy wildlife viewing and outdoor activities will find this location particularly appealing.
Convenient Access to Calais and the Northern Border
While Pembroke offers a quiet retreat, Aweigh Downeast Lodge & Cabins is also conveniently located near the city of Calais. The reviewer mentioned that Calais is "a bigger city than we wanted to stay in, but one we needed for some shopping and to see the northern border." This provides guests with access to essential amenities, shopping opportunities, and the unique experience of visiting the northern border between the United States and Canada. The balance between the tranquility of Pembroke and the accessibility of Calais offers the best of both worlds for visitors.
Stunning Night Skies and Stargazing Opportunities
One of the more enchanting aspects of the location is the exceptional stargazing opportunities. The reviewer expressed their joy at being able to spot "SO many constellations" due to the lack of light pollution in the area. They noted that even though they live in a small city, the brightness usually obscures the night sky. This feature will be particularly appealing to astronomy enthusiasts and anyone who appreciates the beauty of a clear, star-filled sky. For local users accustomed to more light-polluted areas, the chance to witness such a display could be a memorable experience.
Scenic Beauty of the Surrounding Area
The reviewer also recommends taking a drive out to the wildlife refuge, specifically mentioning Charlotte Road and a "big, beautiful lake" where the sunsets are "breathtaking." This highlights the scenic beauty of the region surrounding Pembroke and Aweigh Downeast Lodge & Cabins. The description of the sunsets as breathtaking reinforces Maine's reputation as "vacationland" and suggests that guests will have ample opportunities to immerse themselves in natural beauty.
Potential Challenges: Late Arrival and Navigation
One guest who booked through Airbnb mentioned arriving "super late because we got lost on the scenic byways with no reception and the location not showing on Google maps." This suggests that while the area is beautiful, navigation might be challenging, particularly for those unfamiliar with the region or relying solely on GPS. The guest noted adding the location to Google Maps, which hopefully will improve wayfinding for future visitors. Local users traveling to Aweigh Downeast Lodge & Cabins should be aware of potential reception issues in certain areas and consider having offline maps or detailed directions as a backup.

Aweigh Downeast Lodge & Cabins Reviews
My sister and I stayed 3 nights in of their lovely lil cabinettes (lol). This was our first trip to Maine and our second multi day stop. The couple who own this business are very friendly and did everything possible to make our stay great. They offered to move us on our last night because of a lil plumbing issue. There was no reason for all that.Everything was working good enough and God knows they were working double time to make it perfect while also caring for their other cabins, the lodge and other guests. The lil town of Pembroke is so quiet and that's exactly what we needed. We were so close to Moose horn wildlife refuge which was the main reason for our visit to that area and also very close to Calais that is a bigger city than we wanted to stay in, but one we needed for some shopping and to see the northern border.Walking out at night and being able to spot SO many constellations was joyful to my soul.I live in a small city, but it's so bright that I seldom see more than the big and lil dippers.I could go on for hours about that lil cabin and the area that is located in.I'm not going to though because I want those reading this to go experience it for themselves. When you go make sure that you take a drive out to the wildlife refuge. On the way there, on Charlotte Rd there's a big, beautiful lake. Sunsets there will take your breath.I now understand why Maine is called vacationland.
Aug 08, 2022 · Michele WalburnBooked them on Airbnb, cute little cabins. Got there super late because we got lost on the scenic byways with no reception and the location not showing on Google maps. Added it and hopefully that makes it easier for others. Will post more pictures when the sun comes up if I don't head out early.
