Banning State Park Campground Introduce
For local users seeking an immersive "camping near me" experience within a naturally beautiful and recreationally rich environment, Banning State Park Campground near Askov, Minnesota, stands out as an excellent choice. Located at an unspecified address in Askov, MN 55704, this campground, accessible via phone at (320) 216-3910 or +1 320-216-3910, offers spacious campsites and access to the stunning landscapes and features of Banning State Park.
The environment of Banning State Park is a significant draw for campers. Situated along the Kettle River, the park is characterized by dramatic rock formations, scenic overlooks, and diverse vegetation. Visitors during the fall can expect to be treated to beautiful autumn colors, as noted by a recent camper. The presence of the Kettle River also provides opportunities for a boat launch, allowing access for water-based activities, although specific details about rentals or regulations would need to be confirmed. The Dragon's Teeth Rapids on the river are highlighted as particularly beautiful and a popular area for walking and hiking, suggesting well-maintained trails leading to picturesque natural attractions.
According to reviews, the camping sites at Banning State Park Campground are roomy, providing ample space for setting up tents or parking recreational vehicles, although the specific types of campsites (e.g., tent-only, RV with hookups) are not detailed. The spaciousness of the sites contributes to a more comfortable and less crowded camping experience. While one reviewer mentioned mosquitoes being out in full force, this is a common occurrence in Minnesota during certain times of the year, and being prepared with insect repellent is advisable.
The park boasts a network of trails, offering various levels of difficulty for hikers. One notable trail leads to Wolf Creek Falls, which a reviewer described as "quite difficult if you're not in good shape," mentioning having to abandon the hike after a mile. This important piece of information suggests that while the park offers nice trails, hikers should be aware of the varying difficulty levels and perhaps seek more information about trail conditions and lengths before embarking on more challenging routes like the one to Wolf Creek Falls. The popularity of the trails around Dragon's Teeth Rapids indicates that there are also more accessible and equally rewarding hiking options available.
In terms of services and features within the campground, reviewers mentioned that the vault toilets are well maintained, which is a significant aspect of comfort and hygiene for campers. While specific details about other campground amenities like shower facilities, water sources, or fire rings at each site are not provided in the reviews, the presence of well-maintained vault toilets suggests a basic level of infrastructure to support campers' needs. It would be prudent to inquire about the availability of other amenities when contacting the campground.
A significant convenience for campers at Banning State Park Campground is the close proximity to Banning Junction. This nearby area offers a restaurant, convenience store, gas station, and a liquor store, providing easy access to essential supplies, food, and fuel without having to travel far from the campground. This accessibility to off-site amenities enhances the overall camping experience, offering convenience while still allowing for immersion in nature.
Banning State Park Campground is also described as "nice place for the kids and very dog friendly too." This suggests that families with children and pet owners will find the campground welcoming. Dog-friendly policies often include designated areas for pets and perhaps specific rules to ensure the safety and comfort of all visitors. The family-friendly aspect might include spacious campsites where children can play and explore within the campsite boundaries, as well as the availability of easier trails or natural features that appeal to a younger audience, such as the popular Dragon's Teeth Rapids area.
While the reviews do not contain any specific promotional information, local users might want to inquire about seasonal rates, weekend specials, or any potential discounts when contacting the campground. State parks often have established fee structures for camping and park entrance, and it's advisable to check the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) website or directly with the campground for the most up-to-date information on pricing and reservations. Given the positive reviews and the intent of a reviewer to return the following year, it suggests that Banning State Park Campground offers a valuable and enjoyable "camping near me" experience.

Banning State Park Campground Reviews
Spent the weekend here during MEA. Still a bit of fall color left. Camping sites are roomy. Nice trails however, the hike to Wolf Creek Falls is quite difficult if you're not in good shape. Had to abandon it after going in a mile. Wish we would have known that beforehand. Boat launch area at the river and Dragon's Teeth Rapids are quite beautiful and very popular for walking and hiking. Vault toilets are well maintained and there's Banning Junction very close by with restaurant, convenience store, gas, and liquor store. Nice place fir the kids and very dog friendly too. Will definitely return next year and hopefully find a way to get to the falls!
Oct 20, 2024 · Steve PetersonBeautiful park. Large roomy campsites. Although the mosquitoes were out in full force we enjoyed hiking to rapids.
Jul 11, 2024 · Maria BartschBeautiful woodsy park with multiple hiking trails. History of the red stone quarry exhibited on informative photo plaques along the Quarry Trail. Waterfalls, diverse vegetation, evidence of quarry activity with cliffs and abandoned cement structures for the process. Beautiful xc routevin the winter.
Sep 12, 2023 · Jolane SundstromThe mosquitoes can be very aggressive and very large here. Making a review right now. Bring lots of bug spray, Yard guard, thermacells, screen tents, etc. The hiking is pretty amazing though.
May 18, 2024 · Glen YoungSites are shaded, spread out and fairly secluded. Some sites are small and close to the road, especially the outer ring.
