Barretts Park Campground Introduce
Are you searching for "camping near me" in the Dillon, Montana area, perhaps looking for a budget-friendly option with access to nature? Barretts Park Campground, located in Dillon, MT 59725, USA, offers a unique opportunity for a free, primitive camping experience. You can reach them by phone at (406) 683-6472 or +1 406-683-6472 for any specific inquiries. Based on recent online reviews, Barretts Park Campground provides a clean and accessible natural environment for both overnight stays and day use.
When considering "camping near me," the cost is often a significant factor. Barretts Park Campground stands out as a "free primitive campground," making it an exceptionally attractive option for budget-conscious travelers and locals alike. This generosity allows more people to experience the outdoors without the burden of camping fees. The term "primitive campground" typically implies that while the natural setting is maintained, developed amenities might be limited. However, the positive reviews suggest that the basic necessities are well-kept.
The environment of Barretts Park Campground is clearly a highlight. One reviewer enthusiastically thanked the park for offering this free space and described it as "so so clean." This emphasis on cleanliness is a significant positive, especially for a primitive campground where maintenance can sometimes be less frequent than in developed sites. The presence of "beautiful bird sounds" indicates a peaceful and natural auditory environment, ideal for relaxation and connecting with nature. Sightings of a bunny and a couple of beavers further attest to the local wildlife and the natural richness of the area.
A notable feature of Barretts Park Campground is a "mini boat launch." This suggests that the park is located alongside a body of water suitable for small watercraft, offering opportunities for boating or perhaps access for fishing. One reviewer expressed a wish for more time to explore this aspect, indicating its potential as a recreational draw. For those searching for "camping near me" with water access, the presence of a boat launch is a significant advantage.
The reviews also mention that Barretts Park is a popular spot for day use, with "lots of people come for the day to fish and have a picnic/campfire." This indicates that the park serves as a local recreational hub, offering a pleasant environment for various outdoor activities. The availability of picnic areas and the allowance of campfires (though regulations might apply and should be checked) make it an ideal location for a day trip as well as overnight camping.
For those traveling in larger vehicles, Barretts Park Campground is noted as "*Big rig friendly*." This is an important piece of information for RV owners who often face challenges finding campgrounds that can accommodate their larger rigs. The accessibility for big rigs suggests that the parking and maneuvering areas within the park are spacious enough for larger vehicles, making it a viable option when searching for "RV parks near me" that can handle larger setups, even though it's described as a primitive campground.
However, there is a crucial piece of information regarding services: "*Note no water turned on April 26/25*." This indicates a potential limitation for campers, especially those staying overnight or for multiple days. The lack of running water could affect access to drinking water, dishwashing, and other hygiene needs. Campers planning to visit should be aware of this and come prepared with their own water supply. This is a typical characteristic of some primitive campgrounds, especially during shoulder seasons or due to maintenance schedules.
Another reviewer described Barretts Park as a "nice little break away place!" They noted its proximity to I-15 (within 500 feet) but also pointed out that traffic noise is minimal, especially after sunset, and that traffic levels are generally low. This suggests that while the campground is conveniently located near a major highway, it still manages to offer a peaceful environment, particularly during the quieter hours. This balance of accessibility and tranquility can be appealing to travelers looking for a convenient overnight stop while searching for "camping near me" along their route.
The reviewer also mentioned that the park is "well maintained," echoing the sentiment of cleanliness from the other review. This consistency in positive feedback regarding the upkeep of the park, despite it being a free and primitive site, speaks highly of the management or local stewardship. The presence of two reserved overnight RV sites indicates that while it's a primitive campground, there might be designated spots for RVs, possibly offering a more defined parking area. The reviewer also noted that if these reserved sites are full, there is "plenty of room in the parking lot," suggesting flexibility for overnight parking, although it's unclear if hookups or other RV amenities are available in the parking lot area.
In conclusion, Barretts Park Campground near Dillon, MT, offers a valuable resource for those seeking "camping near me," particularly if a free, primitive experience is desired. Its clean environment, the presence of a mini boat launch, opportunities for fishing and picnicking, and its big rig-friendly nature make it an attractive option. The proximity to I-15 offers convenience for travelers, while the generally low traffic noise helps maintain a peaceful atmosphere. However, potential visitors must be aware that water may not be available (as noted on April 26, 2025) and should plan accordingly by bringing their own water supply. Barretts Park appears to be a well-maintained and appreciated local gem, ideal for a picnic, a fishing trip, or a free overnight camping stay in the beautiful Montana landscape.

Barretts Park Campground Reviews
Thank you for offering this free primitive campground ! So so clean. Also a mini boat launch, we wish we had time to explore ! So many beautiful bird sounds, seen a bunny and a couple beavers. Check out this spot for a picnic or over night !*Big rig friendly*Note no water turned on April 26/25
Apr 28, 2025 · Victoria HWhat a nice little break away place! While the I-15 is 500 feet away, once the sun goes down there's very little traffic (there's not much to begin with). Park is well maintained, lots of people come for the day to fish and have a picnic/campfire. We stayed for two nights. There are two reserved overnight RV sites, but if they fill, there's plenty of room in the parking lot.
Jun 02, 2024 · Conor TreacyFree. Accessible sites. Pretty cottonwood trees and the river. Green grassy areas. Clean restrooms and several places to park and camp. Downsides are the gravel trucks driving through starting about 8 am causing dust. Yes there is freeway noise and an early morning train that fumbled through. Nice hoot owl sounds in the morning.
Oct 09, 2023 · Julie EppersonWe accidentally passed the place we were going to park for the night and didn’t want to turn around. I’m so glad we messed up! This place is free and beautiful! Our motorhome is too long for the three parking spots by the river, but we didn’t want to unhook anyway so we parked beside a fenced area with a picnic table and fire ring. You can walk the dog, fish, kayak, and hike. This is on the Lewis and Clark expedition route. There are more picnic tables and a pavilion across the bridge for day use. I called the sheriff to make sure we could park overnight when not in a site and the said it was fine.
