A Well-Maintained Campground in a Historically Significant Setting
Bannack Campground is consistently described as "well-maintained," indicating that local users can expect clean and orderly facilities during their stay. The campground's prime location offers immediate access to the Bannack ghost town, often just a short walk "around the corner or through the tall grass." This proximity is a significant draw, allowing campers to easily explore the historic buildings and learn about Montana's gold mining past at their own pace, both early in the morning and late in the evening, potentially avoiding daytime crowds.
The campground is situated down a 4-mile dirt road, which contributes to a quiet and peaceful environment, especially at night. This relative isolation ensures a more tranquil camping experience away from the noise of major highways. The natural surroundings are part of Bannack State Park, suggesting a landscape of rolling hills, native grasses, and the Big Hole River, which runs through the park. While specific details about the campground's immediate flora and fauna are not provided, the general area is known for its scenic beauty and opportunities for wildlife viewing.
The historical significance of Bannack State Park adds a unique dimension to the camping experience. As the site of Montana's first major gold discovery in 1862 and the state's first territorial capital, the ghost town offers a tangible link to the past. Exploring the preserved buildings provides insights into the lives of early settlers, miners, and lawmen, making this a compelling destination for history enthusiasts.

Considerations for Local Users: Site Spacing and Pricing
While Bannack Campground has many positive attributes, local users should be aware of a couple of potential drawbacks mentioned in the reviews:
- Close Site Spacing: One reviewer noted that "spots are close to others," and in van camping situations, there could be a tent pitched behind, with children potentially walking through the site. This suggests that privacy between campsites might be limited, especially during busier times.
- Pricing: Both reviewers mentioned that the campground is "pricey" or "a little bit too pricey," particularly for "out of state folks" according to one comment, though the first reviewer who stayed in a van also found it "pricey, but nice." This suggests that while the campground offers a quality experience, the cost might be higher compared to other camping options in the region. Local users should consider this in their budget.

Bannack Campground Reviews
Stayed in Bannack campground one night. It’s just around the corner or through the tall grass to the “ghost” town. It’s a well-maintained campground, but spots are close to others. If you are just in a van there could be a tent behind you and kids may walk into your site. It is nice to be able to walk to the town early or late. It was quiet at night (it’s down a 4 mile dirt road). Put toilet. Pricey, but nice.
Jul 13, 2024 · Jane RuppSpent 1 night here. Nice RV park, really well maintained! The only negative thing I can say is that I think it's a little bit too pricey for out of state folks. This whole State Park is super nice and definitely worth a visit!I love everything about gold mining history. No prospecting or panning allowed!😎#RollingwiththeShasta
Aug 22, 2021 · SVENMEISTERCampground was ok. We were excited to get the tipi but then come to find out there’s no lining to it at the bottom. There’s a round wood platform but critters can get up in there. I found a picture before arriving where it showed a liner. I slept in the car. My husband put up the tent inside the tipi and said you could hear the mice running around the bottom all night. The potable water is by the tipi so you have people walking up real close all night.
Aug 08, 2024 · Danielle RoyWe were intending to stay at this campground as part of our visit to Bannack Stare Park in May 2022. Unfortunately weather did not cooperate with below freezing temperatures at night and the threat of snow. We did check out the campground though and found it to be a beautiful little spot, clean, well maintained with a stream running right next to the campground. We hope we get another chance to enjoy this beautiful spot with nicer weather in the future.
Jun 11, 2022 · Kim StrangeSurprisingly excellent campground near historical Bannack ghost town. Great sites, a beautiful creek, and a calm atmosphere. Touring Bannack is free if you camp. Definitely worth a stop!
