Bethel Recreation Area FAM Camp Langley AFB Introduce
For local users in the Hampton, Virginia area searching for "camping near me," Bethel Recreation Area FAM Camp Langley AFB, located at 123 Saunders Rd, presents a camping option with waterfront access. Situated on Langley Air Force Base, this campground caters primarily to military families and authorized personnel. While offering a unique setting and certain amenities, it's important for prospective visitors to be aware of recent feedback regarding the condition of the facilities.
The environment of Bethel Recreation Area FAM Camp Langley AFB offers a notable feature: its proximity to the water. As mentioned in a customer review, the campsite borders water, suggesting potential opportunities for summer activities such as fishing, kayaking, or simply enjoying the waterfront views. The presence of mature trees, common in the Hampton Roads region, likely provides some shade for the campsites. However, it's important to note that one review describes issues with the roads within the campground, citing "horrible" conditions with large potholes and buckled asphalt. Additionally, the reviewer mentioned that the sites tend to flood with water and mud during rain, potentially leading to inconvenience and the tracking of mud into RVs. These environmental factors, both positive (waterfront) and negative (road conditions, flooding), should be considered when evaluating this "camping near me" option.
In terms of services and features, Bethel Recreation Area FAM Camp Langley AFB offers some basic amenities. A positive review mentions the availability of showers and laundry facilities, which are essential for a comfortable camping experience, especially for longer stays. The same review also notes that tent campers can find their own space, particularly when the campground is not busy. This suggests that both RV and tent camping are accommodated. However, another review raises concerns about the overall condition of the facilities, describing them as "old and in need of renovation." This includes storage sheds with collapsed roofs and a general state of disrepair in areas like the paintball field, which was reported to be littered with trash. Furthermore, a lack of security and rules enforcement was mentioned, with concerns raised about unauthorized individuals charging their personal vehicles at the campsites. While the staff is described as "kind" and "attentive" in one review, the condition of the physical infrastructure appears to be a significant factor to consider.
Features of Bethel Recreation Area FAM Camp Langley AFB include its location within a military installation, which may offer a sense of security for authorized users. The waterfront access is a distinct advantage, providing opportunities for water-based recreation. The presence of showers and laundry facilities adds to the convenience for campers. However, the reported poor condition of the roads, the tendency for sites to flood, and the disrepair of other facilities, such as storage sheds and the paintball area, are significant drawbacks. The issue of unauthorized users accessing and utilizing campsite resources also raises concerns about the management and upkeep of the campground. Local users considering this "camping near me" option should weigh the benefit of waterfront access and the presence of basic amenities against the reported issues with the overall condition and maintenance of the campground.
Currently, there is no specific promotional information available for local users regarding Bethel Recreation Area FAM Camp Langley AFB. Military campgrounds often operate on a cost-recovery basis for authorized personnel and their families, and specific discounts or promotions for the general public or local residents may not be a common practice. To inquire about any potential eligibility for local civilians or any ongoing special offers, it is recommended to contact the campground directly at the provided phone numbers: (757) 766-7627 or +1 757-766-7627. They would be able to provide the most accurate information regarding rates, eligibility for non-military personnel (if any), and any current promotions that might be applicable to local users.
In conclusion, Bethel Recreation Area FAM Camp Langley AFB offers a "camping near me" option in Hampton, VA, with the notable advantage of waterfront campsites and the availability of basic amenities like showers and laundry. The staff has been described as kind and attentive, and tent campers may find ample space when the campground is not busy. However, it is crucial for local users to be aware of the significant concerns raised in a recent review regarding the age and condition of the facilities. Issues such as poor road conditions with potholes, flooding at campsites during rain, a lack of security and rules enforcement, and the disrepair of structures like storage sheds and the paintball area should be carefully considered. While the waterfront location is appealing, the reported state of disrepair may detract from the overall camping experience. Local users are advised to contact the campground directly for the most current information on eligibility, rates, and the current condition of the facilities before making a decision about their "camping near me" plans.

Bethel Recreation Area FAM Camp Langley AFB Reviews
Probably one of the worst military campgrounds I’ve ever used. The facilities are old and in need of renovation. The roads are horrible with large pot holes and bucked asphalt. The sites flood with water and mud when it rains causing you to track mud into the RVs. People charge their POVs in the sites who aren’t even authorized facility users due to the lack of security and rules enforcement. The sheds and field used for paintball is littered with trash to include old signs, trash, water hoses, and mattresses. The storage sheds have collapsed roofs and are falling apart. This place is in need of a major overhaul. Most campgrounds are huge money makers for NAF programs, so it’s a shame to see it in this shape.
Jul 08, 2024 · Matthew AdelmanKind attentive staff. Tent camped and had my own space as it wasn't busy. Showers and laundry available. Affordable, everyone is treated woth respect and just overall a GREAT choice for my weekend. Campsite borders water for summer activities.
May 12, 2024 · Jessica CaldwellThe bathrooms are well lit and clean. I only saw one spider one day the whole week we were here. The laundry room has 2 washers, 2 dryers, a table for folding clothes and a rack for hanging clothes. You can pay with quarters or an app on your phone. They don't have a change machine. The water pressure in the restrooms is outstanding. The area is lovely with lots of trees and a lake nearby.
May 30, 2022 · Laura WrightI arrived at the location and, within 10 minutes, police officers showed up to monitor me, despite my behavior being no different from that of others around me. The next morning, I returned and, once again, within 10 minutes, the police were called to watch me. I plan to document these incidents and file a formal complaint, but I want to warn other Black individuals to exercise caution when visiting this place. I'm unsure whether the issue lies with the organization itself or if it's the Bethel campers falsely reporting my actions, but it’s striking that simply walking to decompress has led to repeated police presence. I plan to document each experience, timing my arrival and the police arrival and then look into why I believe I'm being racially profiled. While this isn't blatant racism, it sure aligns with interpersonal racism is much harder to detect if there isn't a pattern and you know how it operates.
Sep 05, 2024 · Valenica AlluneWe needed to do a test run on our new camper. The folks camping around us were kind and helpful. We had a blast. The price was fantastic especially considering they have full hook ups. The campground feels like you aren't in the city anymore, aside from occasionally hearing the vehicles on the road. We have never had our own camper before, so the friendly neighbors were great when we had questions, and also just to hang out with.
