For local users searching within the "camping near me" category around Williamsburg, Virginia, the Naval Weapons Station Yorktown - Cheatham Annex Recreation Area, located at Chase Rd #284, Williamsburg, VA 23185, USA, offers a potentially fantastic and affordable option. You can reach them at (757) 887-7224 or +1 757-887-7224. Based on the available customer reviews, this recreation area appears to be a "hidden gem" providing a range of accommodation types and convenient amenities, although with a notable local wildlife presence to be aware of.
The environment of the Cheatham Annex Recreation Area seems to be well-maintained and family-friendly, as suggested by the term "Nice FamCamp" used by one reviewer. The presence of both RV sites and cabins indicates a diverse range of lodging options to suit different preferences and needs. The location within the Naval Weapons Station Yorktown - Cheatham Annex suggests a secure environment, although access requirements for non-military personnel would need to be verified directly with the facility.
In terms of services and features for RV campers, one reviewer highlighted several key amenities. The campsites are concrete, offering a stable and level surface for RVs. Each site is equipped with a picnic table and a fire ring, essential for outdoor dining and enjoying campfires. Full hookups are available at some sites, including water (W), electricity (E), and sewer (S), providing convenience for RV travelers. A dump station is also available near the exit, which is a crucial facility for RV maintenance. Additionally, the dump station area includes an air and vacuum machine, available for a nominal fee ($1.00 and $1.50 respectively), which is a valuable amenity for maintaining vehicles and RVs.
For general facilities, the bathhouse is described as "nearby" and "clean," which is a significant factor for a comfortable camping experience. While not officially advertised, an "unsecure wifi network" was noted by a reviewer, which might be a bonus for those needing to stay connected, although the lack of security should be considered when using it.
Beyond RV camping, the second reviewer enthusiastically mentioned the availability of "an entire Cottage that sleeps 4 people right near the water for $80 a night." This is highlighted as an exceptional value and a rare find, suggesting that the recreation area offers budget-friendly cabin rentals in a potentially scenic waterfront location. This option could be particularly appealing to local families or small groups seeking a more comfortable stay than tent camping without breaking the bank.
The overall atmosphere of the FamCamp is described as "quiet," with the reviewer noting that most guests appeared to be in the area for training courses. This suggests a generally peaceful environment, which can be a significant draw for those seeking a relaxing escape.
The location of the Naval Weapons Station Yorktown - Cheatham Annex Recreation Area is also a significant advantage for local users and tourists alike. The reviewer mentioned that the location "makes getting around to local tourist sites easy." This implies convenient access to the numerous historical and recreational attractions in the Williamsburg, Yorktown, and Jamestown areas, making it an ideal base for exploring the region.
However, there is a notable downside mentioned by one of the reviewers: "The only downside to this Park are the skunks." They reported a "large family of skunks that raid through the camp site at night" and were also seen along the road between the RV park and cabins. This is an important consideration for visitors, especially those with pets, as caution is advised when walking dogs in the evening. Food storage and awareness of wildlife are crucial in this area.

Naval Weapons Station Yorktown - Cheatham Annex Recreation Area Reviews
Nice FamCamp. We had a multi-day stay. Our site was concrete, had a picnic table and fire ring. The Bath House was nearby and was clean. Though it was not advertised, there is an unsecure wifi network. The FamCamp was quiet and by appearances, most of the guest were in the area to attending training courses. There are a number of cabins nearby as well. Our site was full hookups, W/E/S and there was a dump station available near the exit that also had an Air and Vacuum Machines ($1.00 and $1.50). The only downside to this Park are the skunks. There is a large family of skunks that raid through the camp site at night. They were also seen along the road between the RV park and cabins, so if you walk your dog in the evening be warned. The location makes getting around to local tourist sites easy.
Nov 19, 2023 · CHAOSNCHECK TWow! I wish I knew about this over the past 15 years while I was stationed close by. This is a hidden gem. I randomly found this place on Google Maps and it is absolutely one of the best places I've ever taken my two sons. An entire Cottage that sleeps 4 people right near the water for $80 a night is something that you never see or hear of any more.
Aug 04, 2017 · Decended From IrelandThis is a military lodging location. Not everyone can stay here.Great value for what you get compared to off post. You cannot beat the area it is in, 15 minutes away from Williamsburg and Busch Gardens. It could be a bit cleaner, but they are old buildings (the ones we stayed in, there are new cabins). Added bonus, 202 A and B are definitely haunted.
Apr 16, 2017 · John LaneWould be 5 stars if it weren't for the trails on the campsite. This is our second time visiting and it's one of our favorite little staycations. The first time we visited there was bad weather, but this time it was beautiful. So, we decided to take our dog on the trail before dinner. It was a lovely trail and a nice length at a little over a mile, but when it spit us out of the trail we were not even close to the campsite. We finally got our bearings and walked down a road that led us into view of the front of the campsite...but we were behind a locked fence. Our options were either to walk about a mile and a half back to the trail and through it or walk all the way around on the roads which would've been at least 2 miles. All that being said, nice campgrounds just beware of the trails. Go there and back or prepare for a long walk. No signage letting you know the trail mileage or map showing where it leads.
Jul 24, 2023 · Katherine AikenGreat RV park if you want to just get away. Laundry facilities are clean and serviceable. Cement pads look fairly new with no cracks and are very level. My RV spot had a brand new water faucet installed so none of those constant drips while the water is on. Dump station also included a car vacuum which is a nice Touch if ya want to clean out your tow vehicle. Like others have stated, the WiFi and cell service isn’t great but my RV antenna was able to pull in about 25 digital TV channels. Great place and I know my family and I are coming back!PS....I do miss hearing the National Anthem and Retreat being played over the giant voice like they do here. The little things you miss when being retired.
